The folks up at Whipple here in Minneapolis have been chucking dildoes at ICE and local law enforcement. Helps that one of the major spots for local resistance is a sex toy store, and they've got a lot of "expired" dildoes around. (If you see reports of "objects" thrown at fascists, it's not chunks of ice anymore, lol.)

They criminally charged a man and he lost his job for throwing a club sandwich at ICE. They think they are being attacked seriously by _anything_. Your solution to obey and cower in fear and let fascists take over helps them out.

That guy's (a lawyer) case was rejected by three Grand Juries, until they recharged him under statute that didn't require a Grand Jury. When they got to court, the ICE Ape "victim" testified that when the sandwich hit him, it burst open, and mustard and onions covered his body armor, and the smell gave him PTSD, which now uncontrollably triggers whenever he smells onions or mustard. His life was totally ruined by that sandwich throwing meanie. During cross-examination, the defense really let the guy sell the story of his victimization really hard, then they displayed a photo of the sandwich, taken by investigators AFTER the incident, and it was fully, tightly wrapped by a Subway Sandwich Artist, who really knew how to wrap a sandwich. Give that person the Employee of the Month Award. The ICE Ape's testimony was proven to be an obvious total lie, and the dependent was quickly found not guilty. The ICE Ape was NOT charged with perjury, which is the real crime in this story. And the defendant was a lawyer, who won his case, so if he was fired, I'm sure he's been hired, by now. If not, he should do a GoFundMe, and he'll be a millionaire in a few days.

They never charge police and their witnesses with perjury unless they cross the police. Perjury is a lot more serious than people think. An ex cop near me got charged with like a 30 year perjury charge in state court for instance. Sick fuck was covering for his 20 some year old kid in the big city, he lured someone to his house, and murdered and cut them into pieces, but then never got around to disposing of it and it stunk until someone called the cops and he got found out. But the ex cop dad lied and covered for his kid. He got charged. I had no idea it was such a big charge, or can be. But the police habitually lie and and never charged. Prosecutors too, and they have total immunity from lying, it doesn't matter if they knowingly lie to send and innocent person to prison or not. Prosecutors deserve a lot more scrutiny, and prison time honestly, they are some of the worst pieces of shit in the country that we never think about, and one of the most powerful people in any county. In the 80s they had a sort of power grab from what they were before.

I think perjury can be somewhat flexible, depending on the charge they're lying about. Lie about witnessing a signature, and it's probably a fine, maybe probation. Lie about a murder, and it's a big deal. They can also just increase the charges from perjury to something like obstruction or even being an accessory or part of a conspiracy.

Honestly dude, I cannot fucking believe people thought Trump would be better for Palestine than Kamala.... I just don't fucking understand how so many people can come to that conclusion, unless I really think about it, and then the reasons are all so sad and stupid. I swear to god the main reason, above racism, above hate, above the propaganda of the election cycle, the main reason he won over Hillary and then Kamala is that he had a TV show for many years. A lot of people over look the simple fact that in the American psyche, being on TV is validating, or at least it was when Trump was elected, before everything went upside down. People will stay in the same shitty town and keep the same toxic relatives in their lives for their wholes lives vs finding people that they actually harmonize with because they're familiar. People who grew up in shitty households find partners like their shitty parents because the shitty behavior is familiar. "Familiar" feels like family. Trump was a household name, and some people didn't even know Kamala had been swapped in half way through the election season. So they trusted Trump when he'd lie because he's familiar, but they distrusted her when she seemed to avoid a subject because she's unfamiliar and so inherently suspicious. They should have both been suspicious af, but he had a TV show and was president once before so they trusted him more.... which is very fucking stupid.

Few did. Those of us who knew that people would stay home because of it tried to warn everyone that if Harris didn't change course, she would lose. Centrists didn't want to hear any of it. They either didn't believe us or didn't care because they wanted genocide so badly that they were willing to accept trump.

And I fully expect someone to reply to this by trying to convince me to vote for her even though I did and the election is over.

It doesn't seem to be as well known, but YouTube is one of the biggest distributors of blatant disinformation, and they have done fuck all about it. There are so many individual right wing disinformation channels that wield so much more power than they should. It's so fuckin insidious. Seriously, go find one of the alt-right YouTube accounts, and just look at the comments. Not a single one will be negative. They literally police their comments, and the only thing left is sycophantic bullshit like "thank you for exposing the truth!" It's actually disgusting. Every YouTuber can essentially build their very own echo chamber, and they *do*. I know YouTube comments should generally be ignored, but when you see something that is intentionally, blatantly misleading, a single sentence comment could be all that is required to pierce the veil. It's axiomatic at this point that their bullshit doesn't stand up against even surface level scrutiny. Google could combat this with little to no effort. Put a flag next the username. Display the number of manually deleted comments. Done. But they won't. Fuck youtube. Fuck Google. They are perfectly happy to lead the charge into fascism.

These political hacks are actively malicious because logic and reasoning goes against their brand.

There is no reason to honor these warrantless requests. The Bush Administration sent National Security Letters to them, demanding all this information without a warrant and threatening massive penalties if they told anyone. They had no legal basis to do such a thing, the constitution demands they get a warrant from a judge as laid out in the 4th amendment and calls anything in violation of the constitution to be illegal and unenforceable. But the rot has been spreading for a half a century, the immune system of the Republic is haywire, we have autoimmune conditions, the immune system attacks healthy parts of the body.

America isn't a country of laws anymore. The supreme court rubber stamps anything the administration wants to do, and the administration "declines requests from the judiciary". You've got administration officials that don't know what Habeas Corpus means, suspending Habeas Corpus. You've got a military openly/brazenly committing war crimes on the international scene (blowing up unverified "narco boats"/civilians). You've got a paramilitary gestapo-like force quite literally shooting citizens in the streets, your own government aiming to terrorize its people -- which's the whole point of the violent Ice operations targeting blue states. But yeah, sure, Google and the big tech bros who have been supporting Trump's actions throughout all of this will _totally_ draw the line at disclosing data.

Oh yeah for sure, they have been for some time well before this administration as I understand it. Facebook is even worse I believe. They allow the police and agents virtually unlimited reach into our lives without warrants. They don't even charge the government to comply with their demands. ATT used to charge the government a lot of money for wiretaps and the like, and made them get warrants. Facebook they just have to ask and they bend over backwards for them. Maybe facebook and google are guilty on other fronts which makes them susceptible to betraying our freedoms here. Which is why you don't allow such consolidation in the first place but too late now our courts are captured as well as the regulators and they won't break up the trusts, not without a new muscular populist government on a full fledged campaign.

It doesn't make it all better, but it illustrates that their intimidation strategies are failing badly, but only if the whole story is heard. By your telling, a guy was badly victimized by ICE. In my telling, he gets his revenge, and humiliates them. Making people fear them is good propaganda, but may have the effect of scaring people into not engaging. Making people see their virtuosic incompetence energizes people to continue to resist.

"My parents were a bunch of homophobic racists, so it's OK for me to be a bigot today." "I grew up with domestic violence, so beating up my kids is just my way of being nostalgic." These statements sound insane, don't they? Well, they're perfectly analogous to what you said. You're making it sound as if growing up with something makes it an immutable fact of one's life. They aren't. As we obtain better judgement of the world around us, we can grow out of things just like we once grew into them. Google has been a terrible company for a long time now, and recently it has even become an active supporter of the fascist regime trying to establish itself in the U.S. I'm not saying decoupling from the big tech oligopolies is easy; it isn't. But not even making a conscious effort to even try, that amounts to being complicit in, if not supportive of the fascist takeover. Your choices matter. Make them count.

I already miss out on basically everything that happens in my town because it's all shared and done on Facebook. I'm fine with that, whatever, I don't really care, but Google services are much harder for me to decouple from. I will admit that YouTube is the strongest vice in my life, I just can't get enough of it. I also feel it's too late, I've shared my stuff with Google, uploaded tax shit to get AdSense to work, had a channel, bought domains, used Gemini for a long time, and more spanning years of my life since childhood. Google's got my data by the balls. I think it's a bit too late for me.

Well, do it like everyone trying to shake off a vice: if you feel you can't go cold turkey, switch to a less harmful surrogate. Ditch the YouTube app and switch to something like Newpipe or FreeTube that both give you access to YouTube's content, but at the same time comes with more functionality (background playback, downloads), protects your privacy (accountless subscriptions and playlists) and also fucks with Google's bottom line by blocking ads.

Google’s got my data by the balls. I think it’s a bit too late for me.

I get this post-privacy fatalism a lot, but luckily for you, it's patently false.

Big tech's business model - at least for now - is to profile you and sell this image of you off to advertisers and other businesses for personalised targeting (and possibly other shenanigans, but let's not get into that). In order to be valuable to them, this profile must be accurate and up-to-date.

Now, luckily, people aren't static beings. We change as we grow, not just older, but as human beings. We change jobs and even careers, social circles and places of residence. We change our marital status (hopefully only once ;), the number of people in our family (hopefully only incrementally ;) and the people we want to spend most time with. We change contact details and bank accounts, brand preferences and spending habits. We change our beliefs and habits, political convictions, our outlooks on and goals in life. Just try to picture the person you were ten years ago, and, I hope for you, you'll see a Venn diagram that may have some overlap, but also some pronounced areas of difference. As time goes on, these differences will become larger and larger, until the profile of 'old you' is entirely worthless to any advertiser because it gives them little to no idea who 'present you' is and how to target them.

You may be right that the best point in time to untether yourself was yesterday. But the next best is today.

  • Google Search: DuckDuckGo, SearXNG, Kagi, Mojeek, Qwant, Startpage, Marginalia
  • YouTube: use https://invidious.io/ for watching YouTube videos (it also gets rid of ads), and use PeerTube (video platform federated like Lemmy) and watch videos, and maybe post some if you have something to post about

You can also search the web for lots of deGoogling advice and guides and for alternatives to Google services

I was merely listing non-Google AI models. The actual recommendation that I gave is "I’d recommend not using AI", but because some people find AI useful and like it, I mentioned the popular other options and also "anything else". I don't use AI, so I don't have an ethical FOSS model to recommend. If someone else does, I'd be curious to know.

Nah. So sick of "creators" and "content". People used to make videos for fun. Choosing to be on YouTube for money is so stupid. They have no contract. The only way to get them to move on is not supporting them, on YouTube. I say this as a Nebula subscriber and direct payment to a few entertainers I like. But they are not on youtube.

Choosing to be on YouTube for money is so stupid. They have no contract.

Most people are not choosing to be on youtube for money. They are on youtube to make videos, because they enjoy making videos. However, they need money to survive. If I like their content, and want them to make more content, then they need money. Otherwise they have to spend less time making videos and more time making money by some other contractual means.

The only way to get them to move on is not supporting them, on YouTube.

You believe people making videos on youtube should move on and do, idk, real work or something? However, if that person has an audience that enjoys watching their videos, they very clearly want them to keep making videos. Them "moving on" would be the exact opposite of what they want.

If you're under the impression that they could move to a non Google owned video streaming platform, there is no real option. People could make their own websites for their own videos, but viewers are not going to go to a hundred different websites. Not everyone's content fits Nebula's platform. There is no platform that can host videos in the same way YouTube can. Maybe one day peer tube will be good enough that we can realistically use that to spread the load of video hosting, but we are not there yet.

To suggest that YouTubers need to move on is truly wild. Especially given Nebula is made up of YouTubers.

You saying youtube is the only way to make money? Even competition on youtube means its unlikely you will make money, I get its tough out there.

Look, if you are watching youtube, you are supporting youtube first. That is a fact, it is inescapable.

but we are not there yet.

There are not alternatives, because people are still supporting youtube. There are options. People aren't going to go to websites anymore? Ok, oh well, its dead. Sorry.

The worst part and you glossed over this: they have no contract. Unless you are very top of your game (like the top 5%), even if they have a semblance of one, it favors youtube. Their livelihood could be gone in a day if youtube decides to drop them, or reduce their pay, or even promote someone else. It is a bad business plan. Youtube even retains the rights to continue to make money from you, even after you are kicked out. They even can backcharge you, its in the terms.

Especially given Nebula is made up of YouTubers.

I am aware, I am putting money to support a place for them to go. To also quit playing the ad game. The two I watch on Nebula are Nebula only, but the growth of the patform won't happen without support so here we are.

At the end of the day: Why the hell do we care so much about passive activities like watching people? I got rid of my TV back in the day for years, and frankly I think I might just get rid of all video consumption in the near future. I would rather be doing to watching.

You saying youtube is the only way to make money?

Literally in my comment that you quoted, I said there are other ways to make money. I said "making money by some other contractual means." meaning non-youtube related methods for making money.

Look, if you are watching youtube, you are supporting youtube first. That is a fact, it is inescapable.

This whole reply chain is about using non-youtube clients. Literally not supporting youtube, or the creator as a consequence. If you use a non-youtube client and pay the creator director, you bypass supporting youtube in a monetary fashion at all.

There are not alternatives, because people are still supporting youtube. There are options. People aren’t going to go to websites anymore? Ok, oh well, its dead. Sorry.

This is just a lack of understanding on the scope of the requirements for video hosting on the scale of YouTube. To let anyone upload as much as they want whenever they want entirely for free? There are soooo many reasons why there are no other real options. It is cost. Virtually no other company has the capability to do what YouTube is doing. With how successful YouTube is, if it were even remotely possible, plenty of people would be doing it. The only other company that might have the ability to compete would be Amazon, but it literally would not be profitable for a long time, and that doesn't solve anything for this conversation since Amazon is no different from Google.

The closest we get is platforms like Nebula, but that is very different. That is for established creators to be able to post either more in depth content, or exclusive content for a more reliable revenue source. Without YouTube (or a YouTube alternative), how would one become established enough to be able to join Nebula in the first place?

The worst part and you glossed over this: they have no contract. Their livelihood could be gone in a day if youtube decides to drop them, or reduce their pay, or even promote someone else. It is a bad business plan.

I didn't directly mention it, but I did say they could make money in some other contractual means. That still applies if they lose their job overnight with youtube. But also, Nebula could stop get enough subscribers to be able to afford their creators and go under, virtually losing that revenue source overnight.

What gets me is you act like other jobs are way better, when there are literally massive layoffs happening in the US right now.

"Their livelihood could be gone in a day if Amazon decides to lay them off, or reduce their pay, or even hire someone else." is also just as true.

At the end of the day: Why the hell do we care so much about passive activities like watching people?

Ignoring the conversation on the value of entertainment, Youtube is more than just entertainment. It is an incredibly large source of knowledge. Watching people is how so many things are learned. I am talking in person teaching, mentorship, training, lectures, conferences, presentations, and even videos. If you want to do something you've never done before, it would be done best by watching someone else do it first, and then attempting it yourself. When you attempted it, you may have missed some things, so you can rewatch to reinforce what you missed. This applies to videos and non-videos. It would be far less efficient to skip the watching/learning, and go straight into the doing. It would take longer to figure out and achieve a comprehensive understanding. Could it be done? Sure, eventually. But there is literally a famous quote for that:

“Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others.” ― Otto von Bismarck

Watching is the slowest way of learning though, particularly on youtube because they are trying to stretch eveything out.

Sorry I edited after you were beginning a response, but the contractual part is really a huge sticking point: the youtuber can be booted at any time, including forcing them to give back money AND youtube can keep showing their videos for revenue. It is predatory.

Using a third party client is still supporting youtube, because it keeps the belief they must be on youtube going. Also, if you are using a third part client, you are pretty much negating the notion that you are supporting the video maker (I hate the terms content and creator, yuck.)

What gets me is you act like other jobs are way better

At least you have an agreement, some basic work protections and can set your terms. But that is a completely different discussion. If anything youtube helps enable this problem, it simply transfers money up and pushes propaganda to keep doing it.

This is just a lack of understanding on the scope of the requirements for video hosting on the scale of YouTube.

No I understand it completely. I say take ownership and do it yourself. I can share videos from my web site (that I made) to thousands without any extra cost to me. You will say but they wont find you on a website. Ok well then we are screwed, because the idea that I am going to use my work to support youtube is not an option, they are not getting my work.

To be fair, most didn’t vote for Trump, but they didn’t vote or voted for a non-starter 3rd party candidate, which is basically giving their blessing to Trump.

Except Holocaust Harris would've lost even if she received literally every single third-party vote, even including Libertarians who usually swing right.

But when have basic facts like elementary-level math ever stopped Blue MAGA?

EDIT: Downvotes also don't change basic math 🕴🏻
