“We’ve been trying to resolve this for over a month, and getting nowhere. Support is non-existent,” Windscribe said in its post. “Anyone know a human with a brain that still works at Microsoft and can help?”

Microslop. The word is Microslop, for reasons you have just experienced first-hand.

Just another day in the life of an enshittificator.

Corporations like Amazon are a scourge. Switch to free and open formats, software and hardware. Ditch what you can. Hack and pirate what you must. Starve big tech.

the only decent version of Windows

Please stop romanticising Win 10 just because it's less shitty than 11. There is no decent Windows.

Reminder: Win 10 introduced

  • mandatory telemetry (you can only choose between some telemetry and firehose telemetry)
  • a built-in keylogger
  • built-in advertising
  • aggressive nag screens containing dark patterns trying to trick users into "upgrading"

If this truly *were* about keeping bots off the platform, I'd predict a great improvement in how genAI renders human eyes. Either way: supposed problem not solved, but more sensitive data collected in the process. Task failed successfully.

At least for the kindle platform, they've stopped offering a USB option a while ago, precisely to keep people from circumventing their planned obsolescence.

I've read that YT is injecting the ads directly into the video stream, i.e. the source is not ads.someshittycompany.com, but rather videos.google.com (which you cannot block for obvious reasons). The only solution to kill ads is to use addons like uBlock or client software like Freetube, Newpipe and the like that strip out the ads in some other way.

Personally, I don't. But not everyone is able to (for lack of awareness to alternatives, technical skills, software constraints, work requirements, vendor lock-in, ...). Are those people unworthy of being protected from an evil company's wrongdoing just because they're using the "wrong" OS? You're basically arguing that corporations can do whatever they please "on their own turf". That's not true as far as user rights, consumer protection and anti-trust laws are concerned. And it shouldn't be.

I see the Graphene bois still like shittalking other ROMs. Not exactly the kind of behaviour that builds trust, but we're used to it by now. Yes, other ROMs make *compromises*, as do the people using them. Saying that all others are "bad for privacy" is just bullshit. *Anything* is better than stock Android.

Very basically (ELI5):

  • Bazzite is an immutable distro, meaning anything in the file system but your /home is read-only. That makes the OS pretty secure: from the user (who cannot break it by messing around), from software bugs (which cannot really take down the system with them) and from potential malware incursions.
  • Nice... But how do we install software on such a system? Linux software does need write access to system directories (e.g. /bin, /lib, /etc and others) during installation, and now it can't. So we need to work around that. Bazzite does that in two ways:
    • installing Flatpaks, a special way of packaging software together with all of its dependencies and running it in a kind of sandbox, separated from the rest of the system.
    • installing it inside distrobox containers (for any software that does not come as Flatpaks). These are, essentially, a separate complete Linux distro (though stripped down as much as possible) running in a sandbox. And on these we do have system level write access. If we mess up, the software messes up or it's malware, only the distrobox will be affected, not our host machine.

You may now begin to understand why I wouldn't recommend Bazzite to beginners: it's a cool, but advanced concept, and you need to understand its limitations and workarounds. Otherwise, you will just be roadblocked at some point, or, like you are, hacking away on the command line without actually understanding what you're doing. On that note, props to you for succeeding so far! But also, at the risk of sounding like a gatekeeper, it shouldn't be that way, for two reasons:

As a beginner switching from Windows, you have enough things to familiarise yourself with: the file system structure is different ("Where's my C:\ drive?"), software installation is different ("Wait? I don't just download random binaries from the Internet like a caveman?") and a lot of software is different ("Where is Paint? Where is Outlook? And where did the ribbon menu in Office go?"). You really shouldn't have to tackle the command line to get basic functionality working.

If and when you start working on the command line, you must understand what you're doing, because the command line assumes you do. It lets you do anything with and to your system, which makes it a very powerful tool. But powerful tools need to be handled with caution, and as you can see from your experience, Bazzite does not teach you that: it expects you to use the terminal right away, and since you can't, you just resort to copy-pasting random commands off the internet. In Bazzite, this cannot hurt you much because of how the distro ist built. But it's an absolutely terrible habit for new Linux users to get into. Once you switch distros and move to something else than Bazzite, just running random commands on the command line can absolutely wreck your system.

The question is: *how long* have you been using it? Sooner or later, stuff *will* break on an Arch-based system, and a beginner will not necessarily be able to fix it. So I wouldn't recommend any Arch-based system to beginners.

Things are moving very fast right now with a lot of back end linux stuff changing rapidly to support more people and programs coming off Windows.

Please, indulge me. What exactly is it you're talking about here?

Imo, not having access to the most recent Thunderbird or LibreOffice version doesn't matter at all to beginners, making Debian-based systems perfectly viable.

Fedora KDE, on the other hand, may turn out to be an annoyance once they need to install proprietary drivers (as OP is due to their NVIDIA card).

Good advice on the Ventoy front. It makes trying out things *very* comfortable, *if* you have a large enough thumbdrive (>32GB). Don't push beginners towards immutable distros such as Bazzite though. Some things there can only be installed within distroboxes, and expecting beginners to fiddle with containers and images of *other* distros is way more than they should have to contend with.

WDYM by "browsing through"? As in, you get different search results? Or a different start page with suggested videos? Maybe I'm weird, but I never use that. Either I have a specific need (an instruction video, a specific song or video episode). Then I use the search. Or I want to see what's new. Then I check the channels of creators I like. If you use the platform like that (which is basically like Lemmy), it's a lot harder to algorithmically lock you in. (I only use third-party clients like FreeTube and Newpipe though, which block most types of tracking and don't require a Google account).

Do you think it’s possible for companies or individuals to not comply with court ordered surveillance and search warrants?

Companies can't, no. That's precisely my point. Hence your argument that iOS is more "secure" than any other bar Graphene is disingenuous. iOS is developed by a company which can be (and likely already has been) pressured into compromising its users on behalf of three-letter agencies. The NSA slides are strong evidence of that.

Large collectives of devs spread out all over the world, however, can withstand such pressures since they're hard to get a hold of. The developers of OSs such as Graphene, Debian or Lineage could easily resist such attempts, simply because they're not a legal entity incorporated inside a single jurisdiction.

You're correct in saying that Apple is "selling" privacy and security (as in: marketing, pinky-promising). They may be selling that story, but I ain't buying it.

@Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works was faster than me (thanks!). Yes, as of now, firmware updates for existing models are only allowed for yet another year and must be discontinued after. As always in this administration, the reasons given for these measures (Chinese attacks on US infrastructure) are built on lies and misinformation (none of the attacks targeted consumer routers). Hence, this is likely just another shakedown: "pay us a bribe or we'll damage your opportunities to do business in the US." Depending on whether foreign router vendors opt to go this route and give in to the orange grifter's demands, things may be different in a years' time.

Could you in theory demand a refund from the government if you were willing to switch to their backdoor US hardware now?

From a government of the Epstein class, by the Epstein class, for the Epstein class? No. You most certainly cannot.

So, they had to ban uh, checks notes, apparently all routers, basically.

And ban firmware updates for existing models.

Meanwhile, Russian state hackers use vulnerabilities in old routers to poison DNS and steal credentials through MITM attacks. Agent Krasnow just keeps delivering.
