I really like the terminal, most of my use is a web browser or terminal with tmux. I use hot keys like cray, but I haven’t found a timing window manager I like yet (I don’t like when things shift automaticallly, it breaks my mental model), and I haven’t found a Linux desktop with the keyboard ergonomics of macOS. But 95% of my time is with full screen terminals, so I’m actually pretty okay. I have customized vim and tmux to the hilt, and I like that.

Because they all use the illegal Colossus 2 data centre from SpaceX/XAi/fascism central and that data centre went down. Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI all have contracts with them. When that illegally running environmental disaster of data centre goes down, all those services all go over capacity and you get 502 rate limit errors.

I really like some of the direction Canonical is going, but very much do not like how they’re getting there. Rust core utils sounds great, this sounds great, but practically I feel both need a lot of time in the oven to come out right and that’s okay. I also i feel like snaps have lost and can be considered a mistake. I don’t use snaps, so I can’t explain why, but everyone is saying it.

Tim was great for the shareholders and not so much the customer. I feel like most services got worse, hardware got worse before the M series, but post M I haven’t seen much innovation — just a lot of recycled parts for peripherals like Studio Display, which is premium price but sub premium quality (camera, panel itself, and ports/support). Phones have massively homogenized under Cook And software has taken a massive nose dive. As much as I try to like swift, it sucks. And it was a mistake to lose Chris Lattner, because without him Swift has had basically no focus or direction other than boosting SwiftUI. Nobody has ever managed building production software with Swift outside of app dev, which I think says it finds a poor compromise on real performance vs ergonomics vs safety. I do not think Rust is better, I think Swift makes it too hard to do the right low level things. AI/Siri has been embarrassing. Shipping cadence is worst in the business, there’s no reason so many updates are tied to OS updates, it’s simultaneously too rapid for trans to build robust software, and too slow to fix bugs and make QOL adjustments. So when I look back on the last several years of Apple I kinda just see a bunch of departments duct taped together and drifting away from each other, and then the finance team driving all the decisions.

I can believe in my heart that the nazis were evil and the fact that not everyone believes that does not make it incorrect. It just means that other people are either evil or ignorant. In general just because I believe something does not make it correct, however, in this case we have objective evidence of these claims, that you can still read for yourself from DHH’s own blog directly.

I’m mildly interested in one of those coffee mugs that heats your coffee, as I drink mine slowly while working. But I don’t want an app for that. I just want a wireless charger puck and a temperature dial, with maybe a failsafe so it doesn’t overheat when empty. So much tech should be small little closed systems, but then you lose the ability to shove pop up ad notifications at the user, or scrape and sell their location, or preinstall residential prices you rent to highly suspicious companies.

I pick on Rust because of the “write everything in Rust” crowd and just personally I don’t like how the language feels. I don’t think rust has found fit in the GUI sphere, though it’s getting some adoption from tools like zed, and hopefully some native gui tools get better with it. Swift has some fit there, but it’s not a fair comparison because it’s forced. Swift has nice ergonomics though with callbacks and lib dispatch plus combine that work well for GUIs. Swift also suffered from poor versioning tools, and platform code differences which have hurt it even if they’ve been patched over.

Djikstra was so fucking _wrong_ with this and people who parrot this are so annoying. Sure, an _offset_ starts at zero, but an _index_ can very well start at one. Not all arrays represent a physical offset, please stop pretending your inferior zero only indexing is in any way superior. Sometimes math is just simpler from one. When you’re translating math to code, one based indexes are usually better.

To my knowledge, which is often wrong, that's necessary. It's a proof of work system, so your browser has to receive the challenge work, create background workers to do it, then submit the results and get authenticated. If the work wasn't challenging (slow), then it wouldn't be any impediment to scrapers and bots. Whether there are alternatives to proof of work that work well, I do not know. But fingerprinting alone is actually very difficult.

8 or 9. Started my day with an outage alert. I had two different people propose fixing a data duplication bug by silently dropping the duplicate data. Neither asked why there was duplicate data. Silently deleting the data would have led to catastrophic issues and was masking a join key error. Fine Ican fix this shit code myself, remove the non-entity key joins (who the fuck joins on a name field when the ID is right there. Somehow nobody has named two objects the same for three years). Then I discovered someone put invalid data for one of our key accounts into Salesforce and that propagated to other systems, because the guy who set up the integration didn’t add any validation. It’s 10 am. I’m less than 2 days into my Sprint. The VP just changed the scope on my project to require rebuilding half the production system because we need to launch our AI product for the investors. Why can’t I just have the shitty contractors who proposed deleting the duplicate data build out our new security foundation!? Can’t Claude do all this in a day? He asked Claude and Claude found all the problems without looking at the codebase at all. Please fucking shoot me.

I actually do know what happened.

This robin has been gathering mud and nesting material from my garden (there are two birds nests in my yard this year). She started trying to build a nest on my door, so I scared her off before she could. It was a terrible spot.

I saw her with this string she found. She used her little foot and beak to loop it into a perfect coil. It was really neat to watch. I was worried about the obviously synthetic material, no idea where she found it.

At lunch I saw her and her mate in my neighbours lilac bush and hunting for lunch in my yard. So all seemed good.

Then in the afternoon I heard a commotion and saw a bunch of black birds flying around the crow. I assumed he was attacking a blackbird nest, since there’s at least two near my house. When I put on my binoculars he was pulling feathers out of something.

There was nothing I could do, by the time I got there she was dead and dangling from the string. The robin got tangled in the string and couldn’t move so the crow attacked her and killed her.

So yeah, roller coaster of a day.

The crow is known to me, I generally like watching him. He steals sandwiches from somebody and stashes them in gutters.

I mean, it’s nature, but I got a bit attached watching this robin.

It is, usb4 and thunderbolt are (as I understand) extensions of the pcie bus or sobering, so they do require escalated security permissions in all operating systems. macOS desktops auto approve, laptops request permission, and windows does its own approval. Linux requires approval until you set your computer’s security settings.

I tried this one but I never finished configuring it, I should try again though. My Linux journey over 1.5 years has been fedora gnome, then cosmic, then KDE, then nix+niri but doing both at one was a mistake. After that I just decided to embrace KDE and learn nix, and that’s where I am many months later.

A recent 1password update borked something with passkeys. They didn’t work at all for me for a week. Might be worth trying again, because they now work reliably for me again. This is not a ringing endorsement of either passkeys or 1password, but bad releases do happen.

Of you go into the thunderbolt control, have you approved the monitor? Most of the issues with thunderbolt on Linux for me have been the insane/annoying approval process. I can’t use gnome for example because the gnome login manager uses separate permissions so I can’t approve the display before logging in. (No idea if they fixed this). On plasma there is a menu for this, but you may have to go into terminal or ssh into the machine, or use hdmi to enable your display then move your computer back to it.

I just can’t communicate why or how an average user should use passkeys. Yes, passkeys are hard/impossible to phish, but the fallback flows are exactly as easy to phish as passwords today and are basically a requirement if you implement passkeys. I can’t recommend using passkeys in Chrome’s password manager, for lock in and portability reasons (plus every browser should have an ad blocker). I can’t recommend the OS based ones because frankly nobody should install windows anymore, and macOS is on the precipice of enshittification. That just leaves password managers, which I think are a good idea, but also a single point of failure.

No, I doubt really use it for launching apps. On most OSes now you press cmd/windows/super button and it opens a text field to launch apps. Mostly I use CLIs or TUIs in the terminal for 80% of my computer use, and a many apps that are just browser tabs now. My vim config has dozens of custom hot keys and functions for all sorts of things. Same with tmux and my dot files or user local script bin, they’re full of utilities and scripts and customizations. That’s never going to help me organize a photo album or be a good existence for checking my email (I know I can check my email from a tui, but I don’t want to)
