The basic principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) which Canada is a signatory of includes: 1. Non-discrimination The rights of all children must be respected without discrimination of any kind. It does not matter their gender; if they are rich or poor; what their religion, ethnicity, or language is; or whether they have special needs. 2. The best interests of the child When decisions are made that affect the lives of children, the Convention says that it is very impo...

Okay, so I've had to mention a lot of times this week that immigrants pay the same taxes as citizens. Essential public services like healthcare and education are for Canadian residents, not just Canadian citizens. Citizenship has nothing to do with what you pay into it, or what you should get out of it. Though it does let you vote in referendums and elections. But even with that established, many bigots will attempt to claim that migrants pay less into the system than they do. They do t...

Smith would have to answer for these referendum questions if this was an election platform. Instead of holding an election and defending her position, Danielle Smith held a referendum at our expense and spent $4 million of our own money just to advertise her own position. We should have had options, like other candidates with alternative positions instead of just "my way or the highway" from Danielle Smith, with no repercussions (ie, loss of office) if she loses. This was an ex...

And what did her UCP predecessor do as soon as he took office? Take away protections from queer kids in Gay-Straight Alliances (safe spaces) in schools. And what did Smith do before banning rainbow flags? Ban queer books and restrict the freedom of trans kids. You think the UCP might be homophobic? #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli #education #healthcare #gayrights #transrights #queerrights

To those indoctrinated Albertans who believe that "Alberta pays the lionshare of Canada's taxes", which we have heard repeated SO MUCH over this referendum, here are the actual facts: Ontario contributes the largest portion of taxes at 41.8% ($92.39 billion), followed by Quebec at 19.7% ($43.55 billion), British Columbia at 14.9% ($33.04 billion), and Alberta at 13.9% ($29.9 billion). The four largest provinces (Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta) account...

In 1988 we had 7.2 beds to every 1000 people. Today we have 1.7 beds to every 1000 people. Even without accounting for population growth (which has more than doubled), that was 17,790 beds compared to 9,003 today. Adriana Lagrange and Danielle Smith calls 9,003 beds with today's population "a record high" and "the largest capacity in Alberta's history". Yes, that lie is intentional. It cannot be anything but. When workers can stand together, we have a better shot at getting a fair deal at work. https://share.canadianlabour.ca/s/Tsxdkn41 United we stand. You can't pull us apart. Q: Why do you think the right to strike is important for workers? At the end of the day, our only real power is to withdraw our labour. We should not be legislated or forced back by the police, by the government, by anybody to do our job. We are human beings with digintiy, and we take pride in our work, regardless o...

Eliminating EDIA is a double-whammy with the UCP making immigrants pay out-of-pocket for healthcare and their childrens' education. First they take away decent job opportunities, shielded behind white patriarchal privilege, then they make you pay extra for essential needs, with money you can't make. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli #xenophobia #racism #hate #dei #healthcare #education #discrimination

RE: https://mstdn.ca/@avilewis/117203890855538107 Thanks so much for saying this, Avi! I can't believe how many people have their heads so far up in Oil & Gas that they believe the only way to stop the largest multi-billion dollar industry which is creating costly global wars, killing countless millions to raise their profits and capital ownership, is to hand them more of our public money without any strings attached. We could be funding anything but Oil & Gas to make our lives more...

Strike Alert! WestJet flight attendants are on strike to end unpaid work - and they will not have to stand alone. ✊ These workers can perform up to 35 hours of unpaid work each month. Boarding, delays, safety and security duties all happen before the plane pushes back from the gate — but too much of that work still goes unpaid. They are standing up for fair pay and respect at work. Now it is our turn to show up for them. A strong picket line matters. Every person who joins helps lift workers...

Hoping for the ABNDP to come to the realization that taking Danielle Smith's side on this issue is not the smartest move. The idea that "we must back O&G profiteers because we live in Alberta" is not the kind of governance expected from the under-represented in Alberta. This isn't about Ottawa vs. Alberta. This is about our tax dollars being sunk into private profits at the grave expense of our national resources and environment. Danielle Smith knows that the ABNDP is pro...

You guys realize that Israeli do this EVERY SINGLE DAY? They teach kids in Hebrew schools, not just in Israel but abroad in the US and Canada, with maps showing all of Palestine as Israel. They did this openly and publicly in Edmonton, Alberta, during our Heritage Days CULTURAL FESTIVAL (and of course, nothing was done about it)! This is every day, not just in Israel but around the world by every organization which is Pro-Israel, in your country and mine (leading to racist attacks at home by the...

We need a Green New Deal!! "This trade war should jolt us out of our reliance on volatile fossil fuels and accelerate our transition to clean, secure and reliable energy. Last year, China and India installed so much solar power that it exceeded all new demand for the first time: in other words, fossil fuel use has stopped growing for the two biggest populations on earth. This year, the IEA predicts that global investments in renewables will hit $2.2 trillion. Twice as much as fossil...

Sad, but not surprising. B'nai Brith is a hateful zionist organization, not a respectable Jewish organization. We fought long and hard to end housing discrimination over half a century ago. In the 60's there were still many places which would not rent to Blacks or Jews, with entire "No Jews" neighbourhoods. Never Again means Never Again for Anyone. 'I asked if Jews were prioritized or given exclusive access. They replied: “Before it was a priority, but...

"We have enough parking for one entire family!" sounds like a weird flex (for a family facility) until you realize that this is 3x the micromobility parking afforded by most facilities. It also amounts to about 3/4ths of the space used by the single pickup truck in the background. Which could fit an entire family if used for such, but most often is not. This is just an uneventful weekday. During family events the bikes are just strewn all over this area with no place to lock u...

But starting in 2021, I realized I had been mistaken. It took me a full year to finally break away. During that time, I came to understand that MAGA is sustained by a series of myths that are intended to create perpetual feelings of desperation and panic....
