Being human, we are drawn to the negatives. So I like to question my assumptions sometimes... If 8 years ago a time-traveler revealed to me that in 2026 we'd have a high-quality, fully repairable professional Linux laptop, and now a 100% repairable midrange smartphone with bootloader unlocking in the US...I'd be counting down the days to have the opportunity to daily-drive them! And that's not even including a new open source tool designed to run professional software o...

I have an admission...something that makes me uncontrollably rage more than any other tech... FOLDING PHONES πŸ“±πŸ“± - Cost twice as much as a regular smartphone when people are already struggling to afford tech - Permanently messed up after a bad day at the beach - Inner screen can be scratched with your fingernail - The most anti-repair smartphones - All attention towards budget phones have gone towards these 'premium' ones instead. To me it's peak 'everything tha...

@random_ruben It is true they look cool! Though for me that cool factor goes away when I see the crease 😭

RE: https://social.lol/@hen/117179067662304034 I decided to make a blog detailing my arguments for why I think folding phones are the worst thing to happen to smartphones: https://techlore.tech/folding-phones-are-the-worst-thing-to-happen-to-smartphones/

Something I've struggled to communicate to people for years is the Apple Watch seriously misses on running basics, and today I discovered a new issue. My VO2 max has been 'stuck' at 65 the last 18 days (I'm getting more fit again!), so I did some digging and it turns out Apple's VO2 Max caps out at 65. This is crazy?! For context: Pro athletes are getting closer to teasing the 100 mark and even many high school athletes can crack 65. So while it&#39...

Tonight in Paris: metro shut down, I accidentally walked into the protests at Porte Saint-Denis. Fire, riot cops, tear gas. Opened Bolt (European Uber for you Americans). Normally a phone-number-&-SMS-code ordeal, but I’d set up a passkey a month ago. One tap, driver on the way. Car arrives as a mob runs past and tear gas LITERALLY hits my feet. Jumped in the Prius and we went 0-60 (0-100 for you Europeans) in a heroic 11 seconds. Moral of the story: passkeys are phishing resistant AN...

https://birchtree.me/blog/chapterpod-is-out-now/ @matt_birchler thank you for building this. The current options are quite horrible to work with. I know our audio listeners for my two podcasts are going to really appreciate this tool existing too! (Even if they don’t realize why timestamps + cover art + etc. are improved)

Honestly, I've found LLMs to be *fantastic* at troubleshooting technical issues I'm dealing with. But I have been thinking to myself, when I fix a new problem with an LLM, it never ends up on the internet to help others. Obviously an issue for other people who may have the same issue, but ironically it's an issue for the LLMs too. Future problems won't be solvable with nobody to report solutions to the public. Has this problem been discussed at all? Proposed sol...

The DaVinci Resolve macOS installer is so funny every time there's an update. Here's what it looks like: 1. Download .zip from their site 2. Extract .zip on your computer 3. You're given a .dmg of about equal size 4. You open .dmg 5. Inside the .dmg is a .pkg installer that will then install Resolve on your system.

I am, in fact, my own worst enemy when it comes to PeerTube federation. If you follow @techlore, your subscription may have been broken....perhaps permanently? Hard to know with federation. The counter resets on my end but that may not reflect actual subscriptions. Can any of you all let me know if you are still getting notified for new content? Just published our newest video there.

Beautifully stated in last week's @comfortzone from @nileane β€” Paraphrasing: Who's to blame when children are on TikTok in school all day? The kids, or the tech companies exploiting them? Obviously the latter, so then why are kids being punished with social media bans, phone bans, and isolation from some legitimately useful technology? We need to be going after the root problem. Politicians once again trying to put out a fire by looking the other way.

I understand this in many ways violates the philosophy of Signal, but I do wish there was a choice to still enable disappearing messages that were not chat-wide. I have some family members who are more sentimental about our chats than I am, so it'd be cool to allow them to keep our history while I delete it. Though again I understand why Signal doesn't want to open this can of worms. Come to think of it, has any messenger done this before? The choice to have messages disappear...
