Something I've struggled to communicate to people for years is the Apple Watch seriously misses on running basics, and today I discovered a new issue. My VO2 max has been 'stuck' at 65 the last 18 days (I'm getting more fit again!), so I did some digging and it turns out Apple's VO2 Max caps out at 65. This is crazy?! For context: Pro athletes are getting closer to teasing the 100 mark and even many high school athletes can crack 65. So while it's just one metric, it's another clear-cut example of how a watch that does it all can't also be best at any particular thing. It's not an accurate measurement anyway, but it's a nice metric to track general fitness over time—until you hit 65 I suppose. Some other issues with the Apple Watch for running: 1. Non-ultra has only one button which for anyone who *sweats* while they run will know the pains this can create 2. It's actually worse than a $10 Timex for tracking splits during a workout. Let's say you're doing 400 repeats: you have to double-tap a sweaty screen as you're moving full speed to create a split unless you have an ultra and use the extra button as a split button (not worth $800) 3. The battery life can barely survive a long run For context: A cheap base model Garmin doesn't have any of these issues, though it's also worse than the Apple Watch at everything else. I just want to complain to Mastodon because I'm tired of having the 'apple watch isn't a great running watch' discussion with people IRL, so thanks for listening to my rant!
