@Kleen@sfba.social asks: I recently did a short tour in the SF Bay Area using bike, train, and ferry and had a really great time. Added bonus was that everything worked really well together. That’s not so common in the North America. Q4. Have you done (or do you want to do) a similar multimodal tour, especially if it’s near where you live, and tell us a little about it. @ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A4. This Summer, Amtrak built the first ever level boarding platform in Vermont in my town, and the first brand new passenger rail station house in Vermont in over a century, so it's possible now to wheel a bicycle directly onto the Amtrak Vermonter in Brattleboro. It's now possible for me to think of things like multimodal bicycle touring, but I don't have a bicycle suited to it (yet). Not sure where I would go, but the possibilities are greatly expanded.

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4. I would *love* to, but due to ableism in the cycling and transit world, even when something provides for cycles, it usually only provides for abled upright cycle riders. Hanging racks, rack with spacing that only fits upright bicycles, inability to roll it the whole way there, etc. This point was included in my talk at the 2022 CalBike Summit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fV-3d-J7pw&t=99s I'd love to take my trike on the trains in Europe, but even though it has some ability to fold, I cannot do it as fast nor lift it through a train door with steps unassisted, etc. So I'm stuck. If I can get across on the ferry, I could be screwed at the train station on the other side. #BikeNite #CycleParkingAudit #Ableism #Train #Ferry #Transport #Transportation #Accessibility

I’ve been taking my Brompton onto the GO Transit train to Toronto for various meetings, and now I’m thinking I should try to plan some exploration trips! There are seven GO lines altogether, so I should be able to have some fun 😀🚴‍♀️🚂❤️ #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4. I’ve done one day excursions taking the bike by train and riding to a different train station to come home. They're fun and get me to parts I wouldn't otherwise visit. The only trip with more than two moes of transport was a multiday trip from Treviso to Venice that required a ferry boat to get from the Lido back to Mestre and the train home. Some great cycle paths in the Veneto. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4: all the time. I regularly train to at least one end of a tour, and occasionally longer distance buses. "Sydney" metro trains go 150km north, west and south of the city so there's a lot of options. They all take bikes, although the diesel multiple units have limited space and can't really fit trikes. Did Campbelltown to Katoomba recently and trained home, 3 days of gravel adventure was fun. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4 #BikeNite depending on how you define it, several times. Boy Scout trip years ago, drive to Portland, ME; Cat ferry to Yarmouth, NS; bike in a big circle there for a week, return. One day near SF, took train to BART to pick up friends bike, poked around east bay, BART all the way to Rivendell, then back, biked across SF to catch the train, and home to Palo Alto. Sydney, used every single method of transportation available to me in 2 weeks. ->

@Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4. I've done a couple day/short tours. We took BART from Oakland to Concord, then rode to Napa and stayed with a friend. I think it was about a 40 mile ride? We do our annual cherry picking ride in Brentwood. BART to Antioch, then a ~18 mile ride to lunch and cherry farm, and back. https://ascentale.com/u-pick-fruit-picking-in-brentwood-by-bike-in-2026 We've ridden from Oakland to San Rafael, taken the SMART train to Santa Rosa, and rode the rest of the way to Guerneville for an overnight trip, and back. I forget how many miles. ~40 each way total? Hopefully many more possibilities will open up when I get that Brompton.. #BikeNite

Regional trains here are capped at $11 a day, so take the vline out somewhere and ride back, or cross country to another line and train home Eg Took an afternoon train from Melbourne up to Euroa, rode to Mansfield on country roads and rail trails, stayed overnight in a hostel. Next day was a 30km social ride out and back from Mansfield, then departed back to Euroa and train home. Excellent pizza in Euroa too

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4: Yes! When we lived in the Netherlands, two times my husband and I took our bikes on the train to the last station at one edge of the country and then took 3 days to bike back, crossing pretty much the whole (very small) country. One time with my son, then 9 years old, we took the bikes on the train to one location, took two days to bike to another location, and took the train back. My son was so proud when we actually made it, despite several maintenance problems and some not great weather. His pride at that accomplishment was so worth it. #BikeNite

  • @ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #bikeNite A4 1/ I've just got back from 4 days touring. The first morning was a couple of trains across Suffolk. Warning. UK trains are a special hell. Most lines you need to advance book your bikes on. Normally a max of 4 bikes per train, which are frequently also the wheelchair/pram carriages. The bays struggle with a longish wheelbase bike, never mind 4 with full panniers. First train we were constantly having to do bike Tetris to let people get to the loos.

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4: All the time ;-) Locally CZ it is really easy to take trains if you know how to get around even my #recumbentBike is small enough to take it on board. You just have to check some specific rules on regional lines. As for longer trips Austria, Slovakia, Germany is easy to get to by normal day train. Farther location can be reached by night trains - Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark are one night trip. I am looking at Sweden - one train to Gdansk and taking night ferry near Stockholm. I probably have more options with multi modal transport/where I can get to do a trip. And even more by Flixbus and by disassembling my bike. #bikeTooter #bikenite

#BikeNite A4: I've never done a multi-day bikepacking tour, especially a multi-modal, multi-day bikepacking tour. I'd like to, though. But I regularly do a multi-modal commute, taking my bike on the bus and/or the tram. Haven't taken my bike on the regional GO train yet, but I'm sure I can find a reason to go. Multi-modal travel has been great. When we got evening bus service in our rural town it really increased the frequency and distance I can go by bike. @ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social

It includes a lift on the bike shuttle service through the Dartford Tunnel beneath the Thames then back over the Thames further down the river via the Greenwich Ferry or the North Woolwich Foot Tunnel. All free which is good. It's probably pretty mundane commuter stuff for 1000s of people but always feels a bit novel to me.

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social I haven't done this, but once a year or so I go ride the Silver Comet Trail out to Alabama, camp, and come back the next day. This year I was thinking about adding on the Chief Ladiga trail which ends in Anniston, AL, then taking AMTRAK back the next morning instead of riding back. Unfortunately I was told recently that, despite the fact that they will happily sell you a bike ticket, the Anniston platform doesn't allow bike boarding (even though the trail specifically ends at the train station for this exact reason). I need to figure out how to verify which is true, the website or what everyone says before trying it. #BikeNite

There are also rides in the Adelaide Hills, etc. You can also catch the train to Seaford and go south-east to McLaren Vale and the bottom of Willunga Hill (and the top of Willunga Hill if you are a Serious Cyclist*). Bikes on trains require an additional Concession fare during weekday peak hours. This is the non-official related events website https://allthetdu.com/ * You can ride all the way from the CBD to Willunga Hill if you are inclined.
