@arstechnica@mastodon.social it wasn’t chaotic, it was organic and intentional.

@arstechnica@mastodon.social to be fair, the subtitle is clickbait and the article is actually about the magic of the old web. Not a bad read.

@aburka I’ve tried Claude code running on Windows. Sometimes I have to remind it that the 10 bash commands it’s trying to run, repeatedly and in increasing order of absurdity, will not work on Windows.
“AI,” ladies and gentlemen. (It is not)

@susankayequinn the other thing that is optimistic about this and brings me joy: the difference here is not working harder or spending more money, it’s caring, and knowing, and thinking. “We just have to try” says that too, it’s so true. Things we should value.

@cstross@wandering.shop It's like their goal state is Mad Max, not Star Trek. Makes no sense!

@lifewithtrees @ImmedicableME love this framing. Both your original post and the difficulty with the term “demand avoidance” resonate deeply with me.
I’m both afraid I’ll screw up, and highly desiring the ability to just be my autonomous self and self-determine what I get to do and when without the tools or timers or lists (or other people and their demands or disappointment or even anxiety about their potential disappointment) dictating that. It’s a dilemma.
I like “persistent drive for autonomy” and it describes the feeling I have perfectly. But it still doesn’t give me a better approach here. Maybe it’s just about acceptance of how my brain works and that getting all the typical things done in the typical way isn’t the goal, and that following my self-determination and particular spirit is actually going to get me further in the long run. Hmmmm.

@tante or whether doing so would have any value or meaning as a method of building up rather than their original intent.
This is insightful, thank you.

It’s time to nuke my Reddit account. This is kind of difficult for me tbh, I’m the mod of a 2 million strong major hobby sub, the account has a lot of good history, it used to be a fun place.
But now it’s just a capitalist extraction tool. It’s no longer healthy or beneficial to support it or give them any energy.

@tsyum @lifewithtrees @ImmedicableME yes I’ve used this! A (neurodivergent) therapist had basically the same suggestion to make it a “can do” list rather than a “to do” list. Like, here’s all the things you can do [might do, etc], and you get to choose. That framing has been very helpful.

@dashdsrdash@tilde.zone @davidgerard@circumstances.run @mawhrin@circumstances.run Model cities and trains… great analogy. Scratches the same itch, except LLM slop has far reaching consequences.
One of the biggest #UX lessons I've become more and more sure of over the years:
Simplicity does not mean taking away functionality.
Confession: I’m a #designer but one of my favorite kinds of work is backend development.
I like to maintain bash scripts and write Linux services in my spare time.
No, I don’t get it either.

@EmilyEnough “ You’re trying to give directions to a lossily compressed copy of the entire works of human writing.” — Perfect.

@murodegrizeco @ozeng you probably got an answer to this already, but generally the right way is just to message Public. If you get repeats, and often real person responses, then you can be heard.
Do you habitually pick a mirror for #Debian or just use the default?
I can't help but pick the MIT CSAIL mirror. I have to think it helps being down the street and all.

@vampiress maybe a cliche answer but Fallout 4 felt very immersive to me and the controls and pip boy graphic design were a big part of that.

@fkinoshita @vampiress Zelda games have always felt very intentional and intuitive to me, and the controls become part of the feel of the game in a way not many others do. Good answer.

Side-note, since upgrading my well-established desktop from Pop!_OS 22.04 to 24.04 removed basically all of my packages and software, there's now no reason for me not to restore my /home directly on top of Debian there either. I expect I'll do that, and move all of my systems to a standard setup.
Which, now that I think of it, would be an ideal use case for NixOS..... no. No.

@dahukanna great analogy. I’m going to remember that one next time someone recommends removing a function on usage metrics!

@lifewithtrees logging out of Reddit for good was one of the best decisions of my life. And I’m not even exaggerating, it was life changing. Congrats! Keep going!
Mastodon is also distracting, but it’s not engineered to be distracting. I find it much easier to naturally stop and the participation feels normal and able to be integrated with normal life like a normal tool or social interaction. Very different.
Goes to show just how insidious of an attention sucking machine Reddit had become.
