@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social I'd like to give an apple to Death's horse, Binky.

@ErikUden@mastodon.de Imagine dying and being trapped in some terrible dream where demons are pumping you full of drugs. Or whatever your Room 101 is. Hypnagogic dreams are bad enough, where the mind is awake and the body is still fast asleep. You're desperately trying to escape from the dream but you can't, even if it seems you're screaming at the top of your lungs to get out. I imagine this would be far worse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia

@randahl@mastodon.social Then Trump should have been banned from the event. He's the enemy of everything a free press stands for. They just gave him another chance to preen his ego in public.

@vowe These young people give me hope for the future.

@randahl@mastodon.social Any journalist who attended this event is a groveling coward. That goes double for the people who laughed.

@Armadillosoft@mastodon.social He was prescient about automation. My favourite story of his is The Pedestrian. A man goes out for an evening walk in his suburban neighbourhood. Every street is empty, with the houses on either side giving out ghostly, flickering glows from the TV sets everyone else is clustered around. A robot police car stops and asks him questions about what a sane, respectable citizen would be doing out at this time of the evening. It decides he's crazy, and takes him in for reprogramming.

@amydiehl@mstdn.social Buy the book, give it away as birthday & Xmas presents, that's the way to fight back against the scumbag Zuckerberg.

@cmsdengl@mas.to @spaf@mstdn.social They recycled the statues, which were of a standard form, and replaced the heads.

Israel was never going to allow Palestinians back to their own land, from which they'd been ethnically cleansed. Everyone with a brain knew that, but well-meaning politicians allowed their desire for the status quo to overcome their reason. Instead of challenging Israel they believed the convenient lies. Israel should have been forced by the UN to do the right thing, militarily if necessary. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jul/16/trumps-board-of-peace-drops-full-gaza-recovery-plan-for-tiny-pilot-scheme

@cthon1c@kolektiva.social @junesim63@mstdn.social I'm not Jewish, but I was inspired to buy the Jewdas Haggadah the following year from #PlutoPress. Thoroughly subversive stuff, and I learned something about Judaism as well. They were giving away a free red beetroot 'F**k Capitalism!' sticker with the purchase, which I stuck on top of the Apple logo on my Macbook. They were made for each other.

What about Trump? “I don’t get into all of the politics and stuff, man,” Edwards replied. “I just wanted to bring my kids to see some really cool fireworks.” There's the problem in a nutshell. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/05/donald-trump-address-strangest-show-on-earth

@thesquirrelfish@sfba.social @lednaBM@stranger.social Religion is as good or bad as people make it, given it's a human construct. All religions have an ethical dimension, regardless of whether you believe in the deity or ethics. They're incredibly diverse, separately and within each religion, shaped by different practices, histories, cultures, societies and places, and experienced in different ways by different groups. To squeeze them all into a monolithic bloc and label it a cancer is ignorant, reductionist bigotry.

@lednaBM@stranger.social @thesquirrelfish@sfba.social @bucachowchow@mstdn.party In an earlier post you said: 'Ask yourself how many friends, relatives, and generally good people will tell you that Jesus was a loving, peaceful, and nice guy?' If assholery is inherent in religion, then why aren't these 'generally good' believers also assholes? The logical conclusion is that both atheists and believers are capable of the full range of moral strengths and weaknesses. You're hiding behind bigoted stereotypes to excuse atheists.

@zeank@mastodon.social @falseknees@mastodon.social Just what I was thinking. Towel birds.

@junesim63@mstdn.social Perhaps Polanski should attend anyway, to make a point. That would put the cat among the pigeons. This has happened before when Zionist Jewish organisations demonised Jeremy Corbyn. In 2018 he went to a seder hosted by #Jewdas, a non-Zionist, diasporist left-wing collective, which enraged the establishment. "They raised a beetroot in the air and shouted f*** capitalism!" shrieked the Daily Mail. Apparently they were the wrong kind of Jews, like Polanski. https://jewdas.org/

@SeaFury@aus.social I love sourdough bread but I wouldn't if it was bitterdough.

@medieval_illuminations@mastodon.social I'd give a lot to know the song that goes with this painful illustration.

@NormanDunbar@mastodon.scot I can see how it developed. Thirteen states, each with their own traditions and histories, reluctantly coming to together to form a union. But definitely unfit for purpose in the 21st century, as well as being institutionally undemocratic.

@NormanDunbar@mastodon.scot Or machines to record your vote as in the US.

@lednaBM @arrrg 'While I will not deny the historic role it played in art, that pales in comparison to the excuses it presents for people to be horrible himan beings....' It's a normal human impulse to wonder about our place in the universe, and that kind of speculation is at the root of all human culture, not just art. We all create life-worlds based on unverifiable assumptions, even atheists. Religion is neither good nor evil, it's how people use it.

@Angie9 @randahl 'The clothing of the people in biblical times was made from wool, linen, animal skins, and perhaps silk. Most events in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament take place in ancient Israel, and thus most biblical clothing is ancient Hebrew clothing. They wore underwear and cloth skirts. Looks like the councillor is dressed according to God's word, based on this. It's his colleagues and detractors who are wearing the abomination called 'trousers'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_clothing

@lednaBM@stranger.social @bucachowchow@mstdn.party @heidilifeldman@mastodon.social You've blown up your argument by saying how good people say Jesus was a nice guy. That means Christianity isn't a monolithic belief but something that changes according to time, geography, the society it's embedded in. An extremely diverse religion in literal fact. Since it's different for everyone, it follows that religion doesn't poison everything. The way some people interpret religion is what does the damage. You dress up your bigotry with atheism.

@jeffjarvis You couldn't make it up. Except that a LLM did make it up.

@zhenyi@mastodon.social Claudia. Richard Dawkins said it was fine to assign personality, intelligence and gender to mindless machines gobbing out probabilistic word sequences.

@Hothrin@transfem.social @ErikUden@mastodon.de Yes, sleep paralysis. It doesn't happen often, but when it does the dream starts pleasantly. Sometimes there's flying. It's like No 6 wandering through Portmeirion thinking, 'this a nice village', until he discovers he can't get out, at which point the nightmare begins.

@Edwin085@mastodon.nl My daily dose of schadenfreude. Cheers.

@ElenLeFoll@fediscience.org It's interesting they chose that particular model of a Mac to illustrate an anthropomorphic computer. I had one, and really loved that quirky design. More of a personality than a piece of technology.

@ErikUden@mastodon.de Do you have a link for this website?

@weirdestate@eigenmagic.net The rest of the house is fine, and there's even a decent-looking bathroom. What was it, a police station?

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social If you can see sentience in the probalilistic output of a machine, then how is this different from believing in a god for which there is also no objective evidence? It seems to me that Dawkins has disppeared up his own fundamentalist atheism, only to emerge from a wormhole into a universe of religious belief in Deep Thought.

@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social It's a sanction-buster. If they can do it for diesel, why not other things? The thin end of the wedge.
