@quixoticgeek@social.v.st I have a vague memory of there being a court case in the US where an employer claimed that as tips contributed to the service staff's wage, they could get away with paying them under minimum, which is already dismally low.
Of course, I don't live in the US, so I have no idea how that vague memory got there in the first place...

And I don't want to hear about the Clooneys having to evacuate their French villa. The stories of ordinary people are what matter to me, like those three Greek firefighters who lost their lives battling blazes.
Fully agree, but the sad reality is that a few rich people being affected probably does more for climate crisis awareness than all those deaths. And yes, that fucking sucks.

@malteengeler@legal.social AI is whatever it needs to be in order to make profit and silence its critics. Complain about it being crammed into firefox? Get told that you hate its local translation model. Complain about society involuntarily putting an inconceivable amount of resources into datacentres for chatbots? Get told that it's good at finding cancer (even though that's not done via the aforementioned LLMs and doesn't need half as many resources).

@swetland@chaos.social I think the people infected with that brainbug think "well I didn't type the actual code, so I must be much more productive", and totally ignoring how often they had to pull the slot-machine's arm to get anywhere near useful results.

@jollyorc@social.5f9.de I built my own NAS/homelab server based on debian, k3s, zfs, and custom hardware. Sure, the setup was a bit more involved, but it's been stable as hell, and haven't had some weird software limit what I could do with it.
Of course this was before the hardware market got ruined, so might not be feasible for a sane price anymore.

So, I've been asked to DM small introductory TTRPG campaigns of like 2.5 hours. It's for the Berlin improv community, and a D&D campaign is definitely desired, but other systems are not frowned upon. I've never done this short format before, but I have some ideas.
I want to alternate between rules-heavy, and rules-light systems, probably using "kids on bikes" as the rules light system at first.Considering everybody there will have some improv comedy background, I will focus more on RP, and how the dice affect their improvisational instincts. In D&D's case, I will probably do one roleplay sections and one battle.I'm probably just going to accept that there will be no real ending, as these will be new players and 2.5 hours just doesn't seem enough to get people used to it while also having a meaningful ending. A cliffhanger or "to be continued" seems like it might be the best option.I will create character sheets for the players, but will leave a lot of the RP stuff relatively empty.
That's what I have so far, but I would love to hear suggestions of game masters that are more experienced.

It's fitting that CDU is black, and the AfD is blue, because that's what the country will be if those two ever get a ruling coalition.

Not a day goes by without hearing a novel way how AI is not making good things either worse or go away. Today it's good YouTube creators being fucked by broken AI "detection".
Even if I would take the AI boosters arguments in good faith (which I don't), I would still question their sanity as they think that it's worth all the damage it's doing everywhere. Even if it actually worked well, I wouldn't think it's worth the price.

@jollyorc@social.5f9.de Fair, although I wouldn't call this a collection of random bits, the entire NAS is just debian, with nothing that's not in the apt repo. All my apps are run in kubernetes. But yeah, it helps that I am familiar with kubernetes and containers, and all that stuff.
I might also be a bit traumatised as I've had more dataloss/problems with "shrinkwrapped" solutions than I've had with devices where I could dive into the innards to do data recovery.

@burak@gursoy.social @reyjrar@hachyderm.io json has very basic types, "string", 1234.56, true, [], and {}. yaml has the same types, but makes it too easy to let one be parsed as another.

@sushee@ohai.social This seems likely, it also seems possible that an amount of these "AI" positions will be named "AI" to save face after putting so many resources into the beast.
Things will definitely not return to "normal", but what it will go to instead is unclear.

@dumpsterqueer@gts.superseriousbusiness.org I like it when people non-judgementally like things. Unless those things are AI, fascism, bigotry, or other things that are actively harmful. Praising a distro is so innocent compared to so much of the stuff that people can't seem to help but post online these days.

@witchgirls@woof.tech It really feels we go through waves, then we have a week where it feels like the sloplords are going to win as the propaganda is strong, then we go through a week where we're reminded that it's hated by the vast majority of the people and that it's economically not viable, and then we get a week of intense propaganda again.
It's giving me emotional whiplash sometimes.

Fedi, do you think YAML would be improved if it forced you to quote string values, instead of allowing strings to be unquoted values.
In favour of quoted strings: It would make it explicit when something is a string, and you wouldn't accidentally input another type, expecting to be a string.
Against quoted strings: Quoting is clumsy when inputting code/regexes as values.

@petealexharris@mastodon.scot I wish they realised how much conflict of interest there is when they report whatever CEOs about stuff like the workforce, or anything to do with their product/industry... But nah, most of the media is owned by the same rich arseholes, or the ones they meet at events regularly.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange The flags in general creeped me the fuck out over there, even in Canada. National flags flown by non-governmental entities is just something that makes me nervous.
In the Netherlands, and my current home of Germany, putting the national flag on your clothing, especially on a bomber jacket, is a way to show that you're a nazi. Of course, when 5 guys opened up in both countries, they thought it would be cute to give their staff bomber jackets with the country of the place on the sleeves... Sigh... I wonder if any of them ever got punched because of that when wearing it outside of work.

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange 100%, that and them watching you like a hawk. My first visit to a diner over there freaked me out, as I was drinking my drink (first time I had root beer afaik) and the moment I took my last sip, they refilled my glass. After I recovered from the confusion, My first thought "are you watching me eat? that's creepy", and then I also thought that this encouraged me to drink more sugary stuff than I would if I had to ask for the refill.

@reyjrar@hachyderm.io No worries, I'm not disagreeing with you, but coming from more statically typed languages, I definitely see some use in encoding some basic types in there, although I'm fine with having the code manage it.
Like, json's types are fine, but pure json is a pain to manually write, so I could definitely see a use for a middle ground.
But tbqh, my own programs have been using TOML as its config language for quite a while now.
