@cwebber yes, we've known for a long time that reviewing code is difficult. Creating code is not the hard part of building software, but reviewing certainly is, and it's a task we're not great at. We have created many tools to help us in this task over the years, such as strongly typed languages for example, and this just feels like throwing all of that learning out. Admittedly, it's not the first time we've wrecklessly thrown everything out to embrace the new hotness, and it probably won't be the last.

@ainmosni@social.ainmosni.eu US direct deposits/debits are funny, because they are a complete hack on top of the archaic paper check system. A couple decades back, they updated the internals of the system to send around electronic images of the checks instead of the actual paper checks themselves, so purely electronic payments work by generating an image of a check with the appropriate information, which then gets injected into the system. Yes, it's really that hacky, or at least was last time I looked
