A 14-year-long retrospective cohort study of almost 960,000 hospital inpatients with acute medical conditions (congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, COPD, pneumonia, stroke, and GI tract bleeding) found that those who were treated by female physicians had significantly lower 30-day mortality rates and readmission rates. For about half a century, language meaning has been thought to be founded on three orthogonal dimensions: valence (pleasure), arousal, and dominance. A new study of frequencies of 20,000 words in seven large corpora identifies alternative dimensions: goodness, power, aggression, and danger. The work also reveals a safety bias in language use. The jumping spider *Portia fimbriata* undergoes movements of limbs, mouthparts, and eyes that are characteristic of REM sleep in vertebrates. When the spiders are deprived of sleep, and then later allowed to recover, their REM-like sleep period is longer, as if they need to make up the deficit. This may be a sign of memory consolidation--learning--in the spiders. Experiments wiith mice found that extreme calorie restriction (30% fewer calories) was associated with fewer mutations. The change in mutation rate differed between tissues; the reduction was greater in liver cells than in kidney or brain cells. In liver and kidney cells, the reduction was greatest in the least active parts of the genome. A RCT of 187 obese adults evaluated the effects of intermittent fasting, exercise, or both relative to provision of diet and exercise guidance. Fasting and exercise, alone and together, reduced body fat but did not significantly reduce liver fat overall. But in the fasting+exercise group, men lost more liver fat than women, and those who initially had MASLD had significant reductions. Two very small studies, one with 8 adults and one with 14 children, found that 30 minutes after drinking pure cranberry juice, dental plaque bacteria regrowth and acid production was reduced by 44 and 33 percent, respectively. This is consistent with an inverse relationship between cranberry juice consumption and UTIs, and may be due to proanthocyanidins. A six-week RCT evaluated the effect on knee osteoarthritis of inulin (prebiotic) supplementation, physical therapy (PT), both, or a placebo in 117 adults. Inulin and PT both reduced pain. Inulin also reduced pain sensitivity generally. Action is presumed to be through the gut microbiome, butyrate, and reduced inflammation. Compliance with supplementation was much better than with PT. Experiments with mice and with human cells have found that lean fat cells in the breast produce an oxylpin molecule (9S-HODE) that strongly suppresses the growth of cancer cells by inducing ferroptosis. Obesity reduces the secretion of 9S-HODE, and thus its protective effect. In humans, 9S-HODE in breast tissue is inversely correlated with BMI. A study of 112 men, briefly shown faces with differently emphasized male and female features, found that men with larger body sizes (height, weight, BMI) were less able to identify the sex of somewhat ambiguous faces, but were more sensitive to differences in male than female faces.
