Experiments with mice and with human cells have found that lean fat cells in the breast produce an oxylpin molecule (9S-HODE) that strongly suppresses the growth of cancer cells by inducing ferroptosis. Obesity reduces the secretion of 9S-HODE, and thus its protective effect. In humans, 9S-HODE in breast tissue is inversely correlated with BMI.
