@jerzone@techhub.social asks: My mtb kit only has a CO2 and small multi-tool since I can easily hike a bike back to car for anything serious. Gravel rides are longer, more involved. Below is what I threw together for 4 day bike packing trip (wolf tooth tool is new). Things I've needed or seen folks on here/YT videos have issues with. Q6. What's in your repair/backup kit(s)? (Share photos if you'd like!) @jerzone@techhub.social's kit: https://techhub.social/@jerzone/117326204563063689 #BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6 I'm in the Midwest, so even unsupported rides are never far from some place.. Two tubes, two tire levers, a hand pump, Allen keys, a flat tip screwdriver, and a spoke wrench. Not carried: cables, chain, tire, spare spokes. If I were west of the Mississippi or ever farther than a few hour walk from a bike shop I'd rethink my packing #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #bikenite A6: this is most of the stuff: tyre levers, hex keys in all the appropriate sizes, spanner for the wheel bearings, chain tool, mini cassette tool, replacement valve cap which seals airtight in case of a leaky valve, some spare fasteners brake pads and an only very slightly bent hanger. There's also a separate plastic box with a replacement TPU tube and a selection of TPU tube patches, and a Lezyne mini pump on the frame, plus a mini pair of locking pliers.

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6: my mtb seat bag has: replacement tube, two tire irons, CO2 inflator and two carts, multi tool, patches, tyvek tire boots, and a spare chain master link. My rides are only a few hours but I'm going far enough that I would not want walk out/home. I use a terribly uncool seat bag as I don't like backpacks all that much, and after an unfortunate experience where I ran over a bolt and had walk home in my road cleats I have a rule that all bikes have their own tool kit that stays on the bike at all times.

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNIte A6. Pump, 3 tire levers, patch kit, spare tube in an old sock (the sock doubles as cleanup rag). Then ideally a lightweight multitool that includes chain tool, a few allen wrenches, a few wrench sizes and mini screwdriver, but those are getting hard to get, so instead, skip the chain tool and loose versions of the rest. A spare master link (never used it). Like @ericm@infosec.exchange, every bike has its own seatbag toolkit and pump.

@jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. Oof, I haven't updated my kit in a long time, which makes packing easy but makes me feel a little uneasy in possibly being less prepared for the unknown? I have a saddle bag with a Topeak multitool, patch kits, wrappers/old tire chunks for booting, a bottle opener/nut wrench (don't know what you call it), a chain tool.. tire levers.. I think that's it. There is a spoke wrench built into the Topeak tool. Outside of the bag, I carry a small compact Lezyne presta/shraeder pump. If I remember, I carry an extra tube. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. My repair kit is a small bag that clips under my seat. I have a folding multi-tool, a CO2 cartridge (I think), a spare tube, self-adhesive patches, and some tire levers. I think I recently added a chain repair tool with a spare link? My hand pump (strapped to my seat tube) has a CO2 cartridge adapter. #bikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6: going with the tidy and organised kit on the MTB... generic bike allen keys+chainbreak kit, mini pump, spare tube, puncture kit, tyre levels, googly eyes, muesli bar, tissue paper for wiping things, shopping bag. All go in frame bags. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. I carry far more than I need because I've been in situations where I needed that *one thing* I didn't happen to have at the moment. For me, it's 2 things. An extra chain and a chain tool. Because losing chains completely several times in car tire wheels going away or down storm drains makes them impossible to fix. One thing I got recently are needlenose pliers because they're good for holding onto brake or shift cables when adjusting them. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6, Each bike is a little different and has its own saddlebag. Generally tire irons, 2 tubes, patch kit, tubeless plug kit, multitool w/chain breaker, quick links, mini pliers, tire boot, $20 bill, zip ties. In a frame pack or other bag I will usually have a credit card, tp, gas-x, ultralight mini trowel for scraping gumbo mud, headlamp, extra flashy lights, ankle strap reflector, and a spork for emergency snacking situations. And a pump.

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social One thing I have added to my bicycle repair tools during the hot summer is a small datacenter 15,000rpm computer fan and a large tool battery adapter. It was in case the heat and humidity ever became a life threatening emergency.

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. My riding is almost all in town these days, running errands. Or it’s in downtown Toronto when I’m visiting there. Which is to say I’m never far from help. My kit is correspondingly minimal! The multitool is always in my pocket. The main thing I use it for is tightening attachment bolts for components in my cockpit when they come a little loose! The phone, or one of its predecessors, has been used when needed 😀🚴‍♀️❤️ #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6 #BikeNite Depends on the bike and the trip! The must-have items I bring are - pump - multitool with bacon strips These are enough for short and familiar routes with escape options. For longer and more demanding trips I might add - sealant (if too much leaked from a tire) - 15mm wrench (for axle nuts) - chain lube + rug (if there's a chain) The rest I've never used and bring only if the trip is risky or long: - zip ties (you never know) - tube - tire levers - tire boot - spokes Things I DON'T bring: - chain/links/chain pliers (I use belts or SS chains that don't break) - derailleur hangers (no derailleurs) - extra bolts (there are unused bolts installed in the frame) - patch kit (no tubes) - pliers - cables/housing

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. Pitifully small at this point. Traveling overseas without anyone willing to store stuff for me meant jettisoning most of my bike stuff. Furthermore, one of my disabilities affects my hands so even if I know how to fix something, I often do not have the hand strength to do it - so I stopped trying to learn mech stuff. Right now I carry a Tern minitool kit and I have a CycPlus AS2 Pro compressor since I can't physically handle the hand pump much. The compressor has been a change from what I was using in the US - a CO2 inflator (which I brought with me, but without cartridges). I feel better not using CO2, but the vibration of the compressor is hard on my hand nerves even using anti-vibration gloves and you have to be careful or you can burn yourself on the heat generated by some of the metal parts if they touch skin. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6. Here is what I carry on my road bike, I have another saddle bag with basically the same contents for my utility/adventure bike. You can see that the tool wrap is still a prototype, as the threads have not been trimmed. The wrap I carry on me so that don’t need identical tools. I figure if I have anything more demanding to fix, I need a ride home. #BikeNite Oh, and both bikes have a full size frame pump under the top bar.

#BikeNite A6: Here's a photo of my repair kit from last year. I've since acquired some new patch kits and a nice multitool with a knife, pliers, and a saw. The photo shows several tools, wire tie wraps, chain brute, spoke wrench, and lots of dried-out self-adhesive patches. Also chopsticks, which I thought would be useful but which I've never found a use for. @ascentale@sfba.social @jerzone@techhub.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social
