@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden As far as I’m concerned, there are two theories: 1. Greed, 🧐, because then you can produce two instead of one bag. (Practicality doesn’t matter here) 2. Sexism (warning 😉), trouser pockets – especially the front ones – have always been regarded as the MEN’S handbag, 😇, so women must be denied them. 😂😂 Übersetzt mit DeepL (https://dee.pl/apps)

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden I was told as a kid that it dates back to the times of witch trials when witches could hide their totems, charms and spells in them... I have never bothered to look into it and find out if there is any truth to it... Probably because... yeah, it sounds logically plausible. Patriarchal and religious extremism to exert control over others and punish anyone they don't like and won't conform... nasty evil womenses hiding things in their pocketses

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden The goal of women's fashion is to cut costs as much as possible, so even making a pocket bag as small as they can get away with and still call it a pocket cuts cost through reduced fabric. It's why fabric is so thin and low quality on so many women's clothing items. It's worse in women’s' wear because we're just seen as mindless consumers, but low quality fast fashion for men is rising too. It's why I learned to make my own clothes (obviously not a solution for everybody)

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden Awesome idea. A while back I bought shorts with effing FAKE pockets. Opened them up and attached actual pockets. Now they're my favorite shorts.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden Theory about why : boils down to the central perception about men and women, long recognised by feminists, which is that men "do" while women "be." Men are active, they need pockets, they are too busy and important to put up with inconvenience, their comfort and utility must win over style. Men are the ones who look. Women are the ones who are looked at. Looking good must win over comfort and practicality. Women are supposed to exist mainly for the male gaze, which does not want to see gaping, bunchy pockets.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden Sexism is probably a lot of it. Traditionally, women's clothing was made for women of substance, who would have had a maid to carry most things that the men didn't carry for her anyway (and this means men had to carry more). The tradition of making clothes in exactly the same manner and fashion as we did 150 to 200 years ago means women are lucky if they get pockets. But also, even on men's trousers, makers skimp on pocket length sometimes, to save a few pennies per item.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden It's the fashion designers who hate pockets because stuffing things in them ruins the shape of the clothes.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden I thought it was about suffragettes arming themselves and men not wanting women defending themselves so they axed the pockets where weapons could be stashed, hence the rise of daggers a woman could hide in her hair (hairpins) and other clever things.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden 1. women use purses so they dont need pockets 2. purses exist 3. i was told by a very unreliable source that women were not allowed to have pockets because only witches had pockets

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden I've often talked about this with my wife, so I went searching for an answer. This article from Fashion Magazine gets around most of what has been mentioned in the comments here. The authoritative answer seems to be capitalism. Handbags make money for big business, pockets don't. Another failure for the invisible (pocket less) hand. @regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden When the suffragists were agitating one response was that if women had pockets they would fill them with sedition. By all means do, please. There was, I gather, around those times something called a petticoat pocket, which might have combined concealment with convenience or at least carrying capacity. You need big pockets to overthrow a government I suppose. Nurses with proper uniforms in 1975 had a really big deep pocket sort of front and centre in the skirt.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden Okay, this is brilliant and I love it. My daughter is currently inheriting all dad's old cargo pants (I told you they'd come back into fashion, wife!) but this might be enough to convince her to wear some of the shorts we bought her as well. I'm also going to extend my man-pockets so I can finally keep my hands free while carrying a baguette.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden Tired of have to modify my pockets every single time, and some other reasons, I have completely gave up on women's clothing years ago. Now finally I can have durable, better quality, and functional clothings. Work trousers for women and men are like night and day. I think greed is the why, as the quality on men's clothing is also shrinking. I'd like to support those who still value quality, and trying to make them last longer to save money on the long run.

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden At first I only saw the photos and thought the pocket on second photo looked custom but t was the right size. Then I read the text and I started chaining facepalms after facepalms on the weird world of silly limitations on female clothes. Nice hack!

@regina_nyckelharpista@sunny.garden The reason I bought men's jeans & vintage men's jeans. I don't mind trousers not having pockets but jeans for sure should have large pockets, I don't like skinny jeans, I did those the first time they came around in the 80s. Besides the fact that as a giraffe in a former life women's jeans also don't do long enough leg length for me & I'm not "that" tall at 5 foot 8 aka 173cm 🙄🙄
