There was, I gather, around those times something called a petticoat pocket, which might have combined concealment with convenience or at least carrying capacity. You need big pockets to overthrow a government I suppose. Nurses with proper uniforms in 1975 had a really big deep pocket sort of front and centre in the skirt.
