Debootstrapping without Archeology: Stacked Implementations in Camlboot

Context: It is common for programming languages that their reference implementation is implemented in the language itself. This requires a "bootstrap": a copy of a previous version of the implementation is provided along with the sources, to be able to run the implementation itself. Those bootstrap files are opaque binaries; they could contain bugs, or even malicious changes that could reproduce themselves when running the source version of the language implementation -- this is called the "trus

Documentation and Analysis of the Linux Random Number Generator - Version 5.9

One focal point of this study in addition to the assessment of the algorithmic part of the Linux-RNG is the estimation of the entropy of the raw data that is provided to the Linux-RNG by the noise sources. The goal of the assessment is to determine whether the Linux-RNG is able to provide 100 bits, the threshold defined by [TR021021], of entropy early after a system boot.

Finding Goroutine Bugs with TLA+

My job these days is teaching TLA+ and formal methods: specifying designs to find bugs in them. But just knowing the syntax isn’t enough to write specs, and it helps to have examples to draw from. I recently read Chris Siebenmann’s Even in Go, concurrency is still not easy and thought it would make a good case study for writing a spec. In it, he gives an example of Go code which deadlocks:
