#photography #filmphotography Almost done with a pile of film processing. I went down to my niece's place in York, PA a couple of weeks ago to attend a birthday party for her four-year-old son. Genuine Americana. One: Balloons now mark the location of birthday parties. The one on top is supposed to represent what I would call a "steam shovel" (yes, I really am that old), which of course is not what they are called nowadays. Excavator, maybe?

RE: https://fosstodon.org/@libreoffice/117489718863435874 This account of the way Msft hijacked the standards process to gain approval of OOXML is accurate but doesn't even list all of the blatantly dishonest tricks they employed to ram it through. As someone who believed in the process of creating international standards, I can only describe Msft's behavior as "disgusting."

#photography #filmphotography Our short cruise on Cayuga Lake continues. The lake is quite a substantial body of water, almost 39 miles (63 km) long and 435 feet (133 meters) deep at its deepest point, with over 95 miles (153 km) of shoreline. If the Teal kept going to the top of the lake, it could either turn right to go to the Atlantic Ocean or turn left to travel down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. One: Taking a plankton sample. The Teal is also a research vessel.

#photography #filmphotography I had my SP back, lucky enough to also retrieve the 5cm and 10.5cm lenses that I had traded in with it. But I see the world in 35mm perspective, so the next step was to secure a 3.5cm f/2.5 Nikkor from a Japanese seller (I love these guys). One: My first chance to use the new lens came at a dinner in Spencer with Jennifer and Mike, shown here with a friend of theirs on the left.

#photography #filmphotography To keep increasing my accommodation to the newly returned Nikon SP and the two-finder switcheroo needed to use the 3.5cm lens, I return again to the Wednesday afternoon Trumansburg Farmers' Market. One: Parked.

#photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 19717325, cont.: Riverside (1971-73) One: Melanie and her Saab 850, our car after my '48 Chevy threw a rod. "850" referred to the size of the car's engine. In cc's. But plenty of power: it was a two-stroke. You had to add oil whenever you got gas, though the car would mix them by itself. With freewheeling and controls by cable (Saab was still mainly an aircraft company, so the car inherited controls from WW2 fighter planes),...

1/ "It’s difficult to describe how it feels to me to get what I’m looking for in a picture. It’s good, of course, a very peaceful state. But the inspiration, the idea is in control and my job is to do as it tells me and not get in the way, so I don’t feel much of a sense of personal achievement or pride in my work.

#photography #filmphotography #TLRTuesday This is from the same roll that I showed a shot from last week. That scene was in full sunlight and seemed to be a perfect match for the Barry Thornton Two-Bath formula. This shrine to St. Jude of the Telephone was in the shade (i.e., flatly lit) at the entrance to an antique mall in Owego, NY. I like the way it finally worked out, but it did take work to recover some separation in the midtones, as was true of other shots on this roll. See alt text.

#photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 19707201, cont.: Riverside, mostly (1970) One: we lived in houses built around 1910 and not updated since the 1930s. Often the living room was lit by some glaringly ugly fixture in the center of the ceiling. But with war surplus parachute silk suspended from the corners of the room and a nice Indian scarf placed over the light (both items being cheap and easily available), the environment became much more pleasant. Very trippy.

RE: https://cosocial.ca/@mpjgregoire/116508317649469635 If anyone had told me when I was younger that I would someday find myself enthusiastically supporting a Papal pronouncement, I don't think that I would have believed them. But Leo has put his finger exactly on the problem.

I won't be able to say this later, when the human suffering necessarily involved in this development becomes apparent, so I'll say it now: the coming destruction of demand for oil may in the long run be the best thing that ever happened to us. And I'll also note that most of the suffering will follow from the capitalist system in which this transition will take place. Now forget I said that. https://nationalpost.com/news/world/billion-barrel-hormuz-oil-shock-is-about-to...

#filmphotography Jason, a member of our analog film club who knows that I've been playing with D-23, suggested that I try Barry Thornton's Two-Bath (BTTB) formula, which uses a slightly weaker D-23 for the first bath and a 1.2% Kodalk (sodium metaborate) solution for the second. So I got some metaborate and tried it on the current exposed roll of TX. I think it's just about perfect for full sunlight: see this example for #TLRTuesday. But next Tuesday, I'll have m...

#filmphotography 1/ The Old Guy's Rant about Developers After that extended comparison of D-23 and Acufine in the the travel series that I just finished posting, I think it might be time for a repeat of my views on developers for people just beginning to develop their own b&w film or planning soon to do so. Playing around with different developers is a lot of fun. But at the beginning, it can distract you from the basics and retard your mastery of b&w film photography...

#photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 1969park05, cont.: Berkeley (May 30, 1969) One. Many participants in the march to People's Park carried dangerous weapons: flowers. #photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 1969park07: Berkeley (May 30, 1969) Another panorama of the march on People's Park, this one showing plots roped off to protect them. It isn't as good as the one I posted a few days ago, but it did require processing 11 separate negatives (and then doing them all over again after I decided that the tonality needed adjusting), so this will be my contribution for today.
