The Disreputable Bede

badbede@mementomori.social

The Venerable Bede was probably the most learned person in England while alive ... I'm not him. ;-)

I serve as a volunteer pastor in a non-denominational, charismatic church in Bellevue, Washington. I'm very much boringly orthodox in my theology; small-c catholic. Trying to keep it real.

I love church history, Corrie Ten Boom, 90s Hillsongs, Acts is probably my favorite book of the Bible, and I think 5-point Calvinism is super weird.

I'm married with three kids and raise a flock of chickens.

Love seeing this type of testimony in the paper. From the article: He couldn’t keep pushing. For months, he was bedridden, rehabbing, betrayed by the lie that football loved him back. He lost 50 pounds. He lost purpose. He found comfort in the crutches that dulled his despair. “It was (wild), coming from my rookie season and the best shape I’ve ever been in to watch my whole body melt away,” he said. “I was super, super depressed. I knew there was more (out there for me), but I didn’t know ho...

The world is wonderful today, Chedva thought as she climbed the streets up to the temple. The structure’s extravagant gilding shone brilliantly in the winter sun. Chedva was going to visit her aged grandmother Anna who spent nearly all her time in the temple area, worshiping and praying. The larger group of uncles, aunts, and cousins had a schedule of when to watch after Anna’s needs, but Chedva suspected that each time the visitors came away with more than they brought. Anna was a true prophe...

"Godliness with contentment is great gain." ~ 1 Timothy 6:6 I am currently unemployed. Voluntarily; I'm taking a career break. We've been trying to cut down our expenses. Partially, it's for practical reasons since we're not bringing in any income. But I'm also interested in seeing how much we can do without. I dislike consumer culture and think it's one of the great banes of our age. So I'm trying to fix and re-purpose t...

Aristobulus introduced Phoebe and she walked to the front of the gathering. The atrium of the house was packed with maybe 50 people from different fellowships throughout the city. Rome was a melting pot and this cosmopolitan character was reflected in the varied make-up of the church. Some sat on benches, but most of the audience sat on the floor. People also stood along the walls, in alcoves, and in the doorways of rooms around the courtyard. Everyone was eager to hear Paul’s letter. Priscilla...

I had been thinking about Tolkien's response to the Nazi government asking for proof of his Aryan ancestry when publishing the German version of The Hobbit in 1938. His response is below. +++++ Thank you for your letter. I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whet...

Someone kind noticed that my trusty pocket-size NIV bible was falling apart and gave me a pocket-size ESV bible in its place. I have an ESV study bible but have never used one as my daily driver before. I actually have come to appreciate its precision, even if that does make reading clunky. When we're doing the Sunday morning bible study and come to a verse that we're unsure about, I'll ask people with different translations to read them and we'll talk about it. T...

I grew up in a fairly conservative Christian environment. We listened to Focus on the Family radio stuff, etc. Pretty mild stuff in the scheme of things but very aligned with the Christian Coalition of the 1990s. Sometime in the 2000s I started studying the what the Old Testament had to say about social justice and boy, was that a shock. Verses like Ezekiel 16:49: "Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idle...

I'm excited about the upcoming The Magician's Nephew movie from Netflix. I know it's going to make some people upset, but I'm open. Now is a perfect time for young people to read Narnia because they need courage and hope. Here's an interview that director Greta Gerwig (previously did Barbie) did with Stephen Colbert recently about the new movie: https://youtu.be/gHevSz8Z_KM

Just completed my first Mastodon account migration! Looks like ~200/220 followers made the jump but that number might tick higher in the following hours/days. Not sure about accounts I'm following but it seems like it got a lot of them. I'm very grateful to have decentralized social media available. It's definitely one of the things to cheer about in the technology space recently.
