Love seeing this type of testimony in the paper. From the article:
He couldn’t keep pushing. For months, he was bedridden, rehabbing, betrayed by the lie that football loved him back. He lost 50 pounds. He lost purpose. He found comfort in the crutches that dulled his despair.
“It was (wild), coming from my rookie season and the best shape I’ve ever been in to watch my whole body melt away,” he said. “I was super, super depressed. I knew there was more (out there for me), but I didn’t know how to get there.
“I think I spent more on weed than I did rent at the time. It was a constant coping, numbing. My whole life, my heart was crying out for so much more. But I didn’t know what it was actually crying out for.”
Everything he worked for was gone. So he tried to fill the football-shaped hole in his heart, and to understand what he saw the day he says he died. He explored psychedelics, tarot cards, Eastern medicine, mediums, Reiki energy — “anything that could get you to enlightenment and to a space of being free and whole and healed.”
In the summer of 2023, a friend started sending him Christian sermons.
“That was when I found freedom, when I found life,” he said.
