In 1969, Kurt Vonnegut offered this sharp and still remarkably timely critique of American attitudes toward poverty through the voice of Howard W. Campbell Jr. in Slaughterhouse-Five. The belief that anyone can become wealthy encourages people experiencing poverty to blame themselves rather than question the economic and social structures that shape their circumstances. #books

@elaterite The gods are a presence more than human characters. Even Athena's presence is left to interpretation. I think it works.

I’ve had many chapters in my career so far - writing, teaching, film, leadership, policy, advocacy, science - and mentorship has been a thread running through all. It’s been an honor working w talented, creative young ppl finding endless ways to make the world a bit better. I am very grateful to have had these opportunities and look forward to many more. I know each will go on to do great things, which makes me so hopeful about the future.

Today I begin as Chief External Relations Officer at the Food Bank Council of Michigan! The role brings together food banks, policymakers, community leaders, and philanthropic partners across Michigan and in DC to advance food security. I have long admired FBCM and am honored to join the team. https://www.fbcmich.org/food-bank-council-in-the-news/fbcm-welcomes-dr-sheril-kirshenbaum-as-chief-external-relations-officernbsp?fbclid=IwdGRleATpnylwZG9mBWZkaWQWUMXP3BjQ_ktMVlK3HxQ9iY8EJITqDmV4dG4DYWVtAj...

Cyber threats to water infrastructure are escalating and we are all alarmingly vulnerable. This year attackers hit water systems at multiple sites in at least 12 U.S. states. This should be treated as a public health emergency and international security crisis. https://www.csis.org/analysis/mapping-iranian-cyberattacks-us-water-systems

When I led the UT Austin #Energy Poll, we saw that most Americans didn’t know #Canada - not nations in the Middle East - is the U.S.’s top source of energy imports. For this and so many other reasons, we are dependent on Canada and they are a true ally 🇨🇦

Latest read: A collection of short stories by Etgar Keret. Distant futures, alternate realities, and life as we know and don’t know it. I first encountered Keret on This American life and have been a big fan ever since. #books

I just finished #Pluribus and found it a very thoughtful exploration of humanity, loneliness, love, and individualism vs a collective hive mind. The series asks its audience to consider questions in ways I rarely experience at a time when so many programs feel like more of the same. I recommend watching and am interested to hear what others think.

It was an honor to join leaders from across the U.S. for the inaugural National Summit of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum in Washington, D.C. About a year ago I finished a book proposal about how our political institutions are not equipped for 21st century technological disruption. It still sits in my laptop. Feels timely. #AI #uspol

Before 1993, women weren’t allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor. That changed when Sen. Moseley Braun (D-IL), & Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) wore trousers - shocking the male-dominated Senate. This eventually led to the dress code being clarified to allow women to wear pants. Credit: Liberal Jane Illustration http://liberaljane.com

I finally went to see #TheOdyssey & was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I majored in Classics & my expectations were low given I still haven't forgiven Hollywood for Troy. Did it follow the poem perfectly? No. Did it capture every nuance & theme? Of course not. But what Nolan's film did magnificently manage to do is include so many events & ideas in Homer's epic in a single film, which is no small feat. The themes feel v timely in 2026 w/o being preachy. I highly...

This is my final week at Michigan State University where I worked at the intersection of science, storytelling, policy, and public service. Somehow, no one said “no” to my wild ideas and that freedom allowed me to grow in ways I never expected, both as a scholar and as a person. I will always be grateful. Happily, I am not going too far and will remain part of the Spartan community as an adjunct faculty member. And as for what’s next… I’m excited to share more very soon!

About 250M years ago, 90% of species on Earth died during the Permian extinction. All of that loss created a lot of vacant niches to fill. Not long after, the first mammals, our ancestors, appeared. Life on this pale blue dot will be resilient - whether we’re part of it or not.

I visited the pitch drop experiment at The University of Queensland today. Started in 1927, it’s the world’s longest-running lab experiment. Pitch is a highly viscous liquid that appears solid & shatters at room temperature, but continues to “drop” every decade or so. https://smp.uq.edu.au/pitch-drop-experiment
