Southern Hemisphere Astrophotographers! ⭐💥NEW SUPERNOVA ALERT ⭐💥 It's in a bright, nearby barred spiral galaxy (NGC 1433), which is very favourable for imaging this time of year. Type 1a, so image over weeks + get light curves! Details: https://www.wis-tns.org/object/2026ahvu This galaxy was one of James Dunlop's discoveries (made from here in Sydney in 1826). I've gone back and imaged a lot of Dunlop's galaxies, and just had a look to see if I had anything in my catalogue...

Spotted this great image, yes a real image, last night! It looks like a firework going off! It's of the supernova remnant Pa 30 and was taken by the Gemini Observatory (north). It's probably the only one of these I have ever seen an image of and could also be the only one we know about in the entire Galaxy. Pa 30 (IRAS 00500+6713) has a central white dwarf star (eventually what our Sun will become). The idea is that this supernova ejecta formed in 1181 and may have been observed / d...

Black holes that “shouldn’t” exist According to astrophysicist, some black holes within a certain mass range should not exist. That’s because their massive progenitor stars are expected to violently self-destruct in what’s known as a pair-instability supernova, leaving nothing behind. New research led by Monash University and ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) student, Hui Tong, has now revealed indirect evidence for this long-theorised pair-instability mass gap...

🚨 Exciting New Science🚨 Could astronomers have finally found the key to solving one of the Universe's strangest mysteries? In recent years, the emergence of a new class of objects known as Long-Period Transients (LPTs) has baffled radio astronomers. These bizarre objects emit powerful radio pulses every few minutes to hours - but their behaviour shouldn't really be possible according to our current understanding of how other objects, like pulsars, emit radio waves. Now, a newl...

Hubble vs. My Backyard's Scope! First of all, happy B'day Hubble Space Telescope! Still the OG space-based telescope that changed our perspective of the Universe. For the B'day, NASA/ESA released an image of a section of the Trifid Nebula (left). You can see a nodule from inside the nebula and a thin stellar jet formed by a young stellar object buried inside the cloud. That's about 0.75 light-years in length. On the right is my 1-hour photo from my backyard - and the jet appea...

ohhhh, this is good! Using the 3.9m AAT, Sarah Caddy and Lee Spitler (from our school!) were able to track Orion on its return trajectory ... ... when the astronauts were still 200,000 km away from Earth! 🤯 That's at a distance of ~16 Earth diameters away, and Orion is a tiny tiny tiny spaceship at such great distances .... But a big 3.9m telescope is also a handy toy to play with! via AAL LinkedIn #ArtemisII #Astrodon #Australia #Telescopes

Tomorrow morning, Australia will play a vital role in supporting #ArtemisII through the @canberradsn - the CDSCC (and as part of Australia's national science agency, CSIRO) I spoke with folks at CDSCC, along with Associated Prof. Alice Gorman (Dr Space Junk), folks at NASA and more about this historical mission. The CDSCC is not the only Aussie team that is working with the Artemis II mission - researchers from the Australian National University are also testing emerging technology th...

I've just realised I never did my #Introduction .... well, here goes! I've recently transitioned my career into radio astronomy, and I study pulsars. I get to use the wonderful, iconic Parkes radio telescope to do this work! I am doing this work with the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project and Macquarie Uni. I am 9 days away from submitting my Master's thesis, where I have reviewed 10 millisecond pulsars to deem how suitable they are to use in searching for the yet-to-b...

The #ArtemisII mission will reach the Moon tomorrow morning, our time. Make sure you tune in and show the kids - this is the first time in 54 years humans are doing this, and the views are going to be amazing. It's ANOTHER WORLD we are seeing! Aussie / NZ pals, here are some time conversions for tomorrow: AEST / NZST 4:45am / 6:45am - Lunar flyby begins 8:00am / 10:00am - Good start time 9:02am / 11:02am - ArtemisII closest lunar approach 9:07am / 11:07am - Orion spacecraft at max dis...

*** EXCITING NEWS **** Dame Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell is coming to Sydney! A few of us early-career scientists will be sharing our science and the stage with her. BUT BUT BUT ... I've been granted a one-on-one interview with her for a #SpaceAustralia article! What an honour! I get to spend time / have a chat with the woman who discovered pulsars (the objects that I research) - and then be able to share that story with everyone. It's a huge thing for me! To be able to writ...

Last night's #LunarEclipse from my balcony. Using DSLR + Telescope. Cursed clouds parted just enough to get a few nice shots in! Now, I need EVERYONE to do whatever they have to do to ensure there are no clouds on 22 July 2028 - total solar eclipse over Australia! #Astrodon #Astronomy

There’s a total #LunarEclipse coming tomorrow evening and the east coast of Australia, NZ and the Pacific Islands are in a grand position for it! Looks like we have a bit of cloud in Sydney but it may be patchy. Best part of the show is between 10-11pm. Max eclipse at 10:33pm. If you get a chance and the clouds clear, look up and the Moon will be blood red! That's because all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the Moon at once. 📸 timeanddate #astrodon

Well, here's some very exciting news! I've been wanting to share this for a few months, but had to await the pre-print to drop. A NEW GLITCH EVENT ON A MILLISECOND PULSAR HAS BEEN OBSERVED! These events are extremely rare - only two others since MSPs were discovered. Glitches are more commonly observed in the younger, canonical pulsar population as MSPs are much older and should have sorted out these types of disruptive events over their evolution. That's what makes...

Excited to now share this story; papers have been accepted! Apep is an awesome system, unlike any other we know about. It is named after the Egyptian God of Chaos - because, well, it is chaos! Two Wolf-Rayet systems orbited by a third supergiant. As all their winds collide, they form these beautiful structures that have now been observed with #JWST and ESO's VLT. I had a chat with fellow student from Macquarie Uni. Ryan White who has led one of the two papers that are released about t...

Excited to share my first #SpaceAustralia feature article for 2026 about an exciting and ambitious project that is unfolding 1km below the surface in regional Victoria. Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) with Dr Katie Mack and explore the ambitious efforts of the SABRE South experiment. Shielded from cosmic rays by a kilometre of rock, this lab offers the ideal conditions to search for the faint whispers of dark matter, which s...
