Black holes that “shouldn’t” exist According to astrophysicist, some black holes within a certain mass range should not exist. That’s because their massive progenitor stars are expected to violently self-destruct in what’s known as a pair-instability supernova, leaving nothing behind. New research led by Monash University and ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) student, Hui Tong, has now revealed indirect evidence for this long-theorised pair-instability mass gap using data from gravitational-wave detections. Tong and the team of researchers found the strongest evidence to date, through inferred observations, that nature really does avoid forming black holes of a particular mass range. The findings have been published in the journal, Nature. @CosmicRami@aus.social … by direct formation, at least. I assume BH of that mass can still arise from mergers. So the gap isn't forbidden, just very unlikely. I will read the article, after all the meetings

@CosmicRami@aus.social really nice article, I found it very easy to read for a non-scientist folk like me. Does #SpaceAustralia have any RSS feed? I can't find any
