@Texan_Reverend@kind.social Every time this is mentioned I can’t help noticing that “Corsi Rosenthal Box” is a mad cool name with extreme Blade Runner energy.

A quieter alternative to the traditional box fan for a #CorsiRosenthalBox is to mount 5 or 6 Arctic P14 PST computer fans under a piece of cardboard/foam core/poster board instead. (They come in 5-packs.) It can increase the initial cost a bit, but I feel the ability to comfortably run the unit 24/7 makes up for it. To power the fans, you need a 12v fan power supply like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BBSBV9CF Mounting screws should be #6-32 x 1-3/4" with #6-32 hex nuts and optional #6 washers. 2/3

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social I’d like to also add to this: I caution against using cheaper, counterfeit fans such as Matrix brand. Mine arrived all banged up and I suspect that also compromises the CADR of the final quad filter box.

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social I tried looking on feasibility of building one myself in Poland, and the largest filters that seem available are like 10" in size, or something like 15x6". Add to that fans with decent suction, and you can get cheapest Xiaomi air purifier for that price...

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social Thanks for sharing, this is great :) Do yo have a link to some of those studies saying this outperforms commercial filters? Thanks!

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social I built one of these a long time ago, when I learned that I had lung damage. It works excellently. You can use a single filter on a fan if you're too broke to afford 5, but it doesn't last nearly as long.

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social I may be an idiot here, but diagram does not indicate if the fan should blow into the box or out - I assume out? Since it says pulls air in through the filters? Would it matter if someone did it backwards?

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social do you know how much less effective it is or if there are designs compatible with an air conditioner? I was thinking of putting an air filter on The output of my AC

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social I just slap a 20x20 on a box fan, works great. https://imgur.com/a/Hu4htzg

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social I feel like I've seen this usually with the fan blowing into the box instead of out, but I'm guessing out is safer?

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social Wait… am I misunderstanding the graphic, or is the cardboard between the fan and the filters left solid?

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social I just built one tonight, as the air today near #Chicago was the worst I have ever seen in my life. I held my breath when I ran to the garage to get the supplies to build this. I had everything on the list on hand including five new filters in their box and a roll of aluminum tape. I'll post a picture tomorrow. I think I may modify mine and rotate it 90 degrees so that the fan sits upright based on the comment that running them on their side will destroy the bearings.

@Texan_Reverend@kind.social True. I have enough money that I didn't want to cheap out on this, and I'd planned on just getting a well-reviewed home air purifier but it turns out that the CR box is the best thing available.

@suetanvil@freeradical.zone @Texan_Reverend@kind.social thanks for this! If you have an airborne particulates sensor and a stick of incense, you can see that without the CR box particle counts go up rapidly and can stay in the air for like 18 hours after emission, but with the CR box running, levels are kept low and clear out to nothing within a few hours. Tip #1: having 2" thick filters dramatically increases airflow. Tip #2: if you have pets, simply wrap the CR box in a bug screen like you'd use for a window - cut to size and tape that in place over the filter, and they won't damage the it by scratching
