  • I have a Survivor song stuck in my head, but it’s not ‘Eye of the Tiger.’ I’m not even going to get a decent training montage out of this.

  • Dropped my daughter off at daycare & walked across campus to vote this rainy LA morning. Grateful for this sacred right & to the many CA state & county officials who made it so accessible. This is how voting in a democracy should be: fast, easy, convenient. #Midterms2022

  • Any public health folks on here I should follow? Accurate #Covid reports & medical updates are a big part of why I'm still on that bird site. Would like to follow trustworthy experts here, too.

  • Why it's worth trying to avoid Covid, especially if like most Americans, you've had it before: - "People who are infected with COVID two or more times are twice as likely to die for any reason" - 3x as likely to need hospitalization; - 3x as likely to have lung problems; - 3x as likely to have cardiovascular problems; - 3x as likely to have a blood clot." https://www.self.com/story/covid-reinfection-health-risks-study

  • @sphakos Thanks for the correction, Sage. I'm sorry - I will give notice in the future

  • Working on a Sunday morning is a lot more fun when you get to re-read great work by great scholars @histodons #histodons #Migration #amrel #AsianAmerican

  • #3GoodThings 💤 slept reasonably well for the first time in a week 🚵 loved to watch Il Lombardia yesterday. Great winner. 📚 I will have a quiet Sunday in bed with a stack of books and lots of warm drinks, starting with tea, coffee soon 🙂

  • @beans_please@mastodon.social @thomasfuchs I think there’s more uses than double checking your code, I’ll use it to “pair” and talk though a problem or generate boilerplate code. I find it helpful in both instances. It rarely generates exactly what I need but it definitely saves me some time at the beginning of a task. It does some dumb stuff though so having 15 years of non AI coding experience definitely helps in my case.

  • @kurtseifried @derekheld @joshbressers @bagder To handle internal servers I add DNS records to my public domain that point to my internal services. Then I use let’s encrypt and DNS TXT records to get the certificate. Since name.com has API support I’ve been able to automate this process to avoid having to renew certificates manually.

  • @DukeDuke @evacide I tried DDG but I found it disappointing. I’ve been paying for Kagi for almost a year now and it’s been a very good experience overall.

  • @JanFi0PN funny how they forgot to include that the Samsung one is buggy trash in the cons section.

  • @USBTypeSteve @arstechnica sounds like it’ll be on the Google chopping block soon!

  • One of these days I’ll probably be the lucky recipient who throws out the $100 check included in the Valpack packet.

  • In 2026, you cannot freely edit your own posts on neither Bluesky, Threads, or X. But you can on Mastodon. Spread the word! ♥️🐘

  • We've had about 30 minutes of downtime earlier today, after the platform monitoring tool alerted me of an outage - so at least that's working! Unfortunately the server itself needed to be rebooted (not just the docker containers), which caused issues of its own when trying to restore service.

  • Clearing out the old S3 buckets with the old host so that I can delete them. Yes, I figured that running s3cmd rm was going to be quicker than setting a lifecycle expiration and hoping I got my XML syntax right...

  • I’ve been gradually collecting these #Lego Technic pocket kits. They all have a little mechanical feature based on building construction, and I love the design consistency across the range.

  • Morning all! It's the end of the week, which means a morning of training followed by an afternoon of reports. Yay me!

  • Morning all. Today I'm feeling the after-effects of having a flu vaccination. Very lethargic with aching joints. On the flip side, I managed to get the remaining S3 content deleted, the buckets closed, and the service cancelled. Yay for saving money! I'm doing some Postgres migration tests at the moment in readiness of the move, but there will be some downtime, so I'm also prepping up the ugliest maintenance page known to earth. I'm going to use a simple tweak...

  • Oh, forgot to mention, but OVH (our planned new host) just pushed their server pricing up 70%. This is going to require some careful replanning to make sure we don't end up crippled by pricing during the migration. I'm going to reconfigure some of the infrastructure to use a greater number of smaller servers - more management overhead, but cheaper.

  • Based on current estimates, we’re probably looking at 3-4 hours of downtime to migrate the Postgres database to the new server, but there will undoubtedly be a performance improvement as a result. - 1 hour to generate the backup - 30 minutes to transfer 30GB of compressed (gzip) data to the new server - 1 hour to load it into the new server - 30 mins of config update and testing I’m doing a dress rehearsal at the moment to do some checks on the health of the export before we schedule it
