"Governments providing authorization for orbital solar reflectors should mandate full pre-launch ecological risk assessments; restrict operations in protected and eco-logically sensitive regions; and limit illumination duration, intensity, and coverage. Global institutions should establish international standards and long-term monitoring networks, and researchers should develop adaptive dimming and pointing systems to reduce unintended light spillover." https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aeh6580 #Space

🪐 From Glass Rain to Zombie Worlds In 1995, astronomers discovered the first exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star. Today we know of 6,000+ worlds defying imagination. Some rain molten glass sideways. Others orbit backward. Infant planets spiral through cosmic nurseries while ancient worlds circle stellar corpses. ✍️ Explore the extraordinary census: https://TPC8.short.gy/BP7mexQG 🌌 When reality exceeds science fiction. #Exoplanets #Astronomy #Space #JWST #NASA #Astrophysics #Astrobiology #Cosmos #TPC8

The Bubble Nebula, also known as NGC 7635, Sharpless 162, or Caldwell 11, is an H II region emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It lies close to the open cluster Messier 52. The "bubble" is created by the stellar wind from a massive hot, 8.7 magnitude young central star, SAO 20575 (BD+60°2522). The nebula is near a giant molecular cloud which contains the expansion of the bubble nebula while itself being excited by the hot central star, causing it to glow. #Nebula #star #space

Starship reached orbit for the first time and deployed 26 operational Starlink V3 satellites on September 28. An engine shut down early and controllers shortened the uncrewed mission from about ten hours to three, leaving full reusability and routine reliability unproven.

SpaceX's Starship launches on first orbital mission from Texas Starship is key to SpaceX's commercial success and NASA's plans to land humans on the moon. This is the 14th flight of the uncrewed Starship, but the first time it reached orbit. 🔗 https://www.npr.org/2026/09/28/nx-s1-5983418/spacex-starship-first-orbital-flight-14-nasa #News #USNews #NPR #Texas #Space

NASA has officially concluded the Opportunity rover mission after fifteen years of exploration on the Martian surface. This final panorama from Perseverance Valley documents the rover's enduring scientific legacy and its critical role in planetary geology. By analyzing these high-resolution mosaics, researchers gain vital insights into the aqueous history and environmental evolution of Mars. This mission demonstrates the peak of robotic endurance and provides a foundational dataset for future human exploration of the Red Planet. #NASA #Mars #Opportunity #Astronomy #PerseveranceValley #space #astronomy #nasa @Space@lemmy.science.social @science@beehaw.org @science@lemmy.world @space@beehaw.org @Space@lemmy.world @science@newsmast.community @space@newsmast.community @space@lemmy.ml #space #science #nasa #astronomy

The gleaming Trifid and Lagoon nebulae can be seen between our New Technology Telescope (left) and the ESO 3.6-meter telescope (right) at La Silla. Their red colour comes from hydrogen atoms ionised by young stars in these clouds. The Trifid nebula also shows a blue tint caused by dust reflecting the light of some of these stars.
