You know how we use every position on the clock twice because the inventor of the analog clock divided the twenty-four hours of the day in 2x12. So, for example, 5 am is at the same position as 5 pm (aka 17:00). Well, the advantage of the number 24 is, it can be divided into several other integer fractions.
The next logical step would be to have a clock that distributes only 8 hours over the 360 degrees but one day takes 3 turns. One of the advantages of this design is that the full hours are positioned on the more intuitive 8 "compass directions".
