The #SKA Observatory will produce around 600 petabytes of data 💽 each year. That amount would take 200 years to download using an at-home internet connection of 100 megabytes per second. Initial data from the SKA is expected in 📆 2027, with the start of major #science operations in 2029. Handling the large volume and complexity of SKA data requires a global network of specialized computing facilities. #Canada 🇨🇦 committed to establishing one such centre https://theconversation.com/information-collected-by-the-worlds-largest-radio-telescope-will-be-stored-and-processed-by-global-data-centres-255268 #Astronomy #CanSRC

Information collected by the world’s largest radio telescope will be stored and processed by global data centres

The world’s largest space telescope, comprising thousands of antennae in the southern hemisphere, will generate massive amounts of data — some of which will be processed in Canada.

@spacerik@spacey.space Indeed, the effects of satellite constellations go beyond their impact on astronomy. The press release is an explainer of our new study, but in parallel we have also escalated up this issue to the policymaking level at an international scale. You can find more details about this in this accompanying video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJNwAKSL17s and this article: https://www.eso.org/public/blog/betty-kioko/

🇩🇪 In Koblenz, a fragment of a #meteorite ☄️ tore a football-sized hole in the roof of a residential building. The rock fragment reportedly hit the roof first and then crashed into the bedroom.

On April 25, 2023, a particularly large meteorite fell near Elmshorn in Schleswig-Holstein; the largest fragment weighed more than 3.7 kg

#Orion’s big test is yet to come with the fiery 🔥 #reentry through Earth’s atmosphere on Friday.

So far, it’s looking like the rocket and spaceship needed for a lunar landing are getting there for #NASA. The biggest remaining piece of the architecture is the Human Landing System.

#Orion was maneuvered into an orientation such that the urine tank and vent lines received the maximum amount of sunshine ☀️ to un-freeze the #urine. This helped a little bit, but did not entirely solve the problem. So for now, the #astronauts are continuing to pee into, essentially, bags
