Behold, this is my king of junk boxes, a plywood enclosure held together only by staples and hot glue, containing 10 commodity SSD drives and a USB 3 HUB, all forming a 4TB data array of mergerfs on top of snapraid.

Endlessly proud of how it turned out. So far the temperature and SMART data are good.

Full swag box of Nokia N79. Swapping the battery cover results in selecting a matching UI Theme.

Read my Nokia N79 story here: https://museum.tiredsysadmin.cc/SYMBIAN/Series_60/Nokia_N79

Nokia N79

The Nokia N79 was one of the most unusual high-end smartphones of the late 2000s. In terms of functionality, it almost completely mirrored the famous N82: the same Series 60 3rd Edition platform, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and video recording at 30 fps. But unlike the strict and “serious” N82, the N79 focused on style: it came with three interchangeable battery covers in different colors, and the phone would automatically change the display theme to match the cover

Some procedurally generated tunes(no AI!) to kickstart your working day.

Proudly made using:
- a $0 computer I assembled from scrap parts during my student days
- free VST plugins from KVRaudio
- Carla VST host
- ORCΛ, an esoteric programming language for building MIDI sequencers

Replying to
@me_ Sadly no, and no Zaurus. Maybe next time if I manage to find a good deal on Kleinanzeigen or elsewhere. Last night I scored a Toshiba E800, the first PDA to sport a VGA display!

Did a major cleanup and a shelf expansion in my basement. Also labeled the entire inventory with #homebox, a truly great piece of software that can be easily #selfhosted

Once again, I kindly invite you all to explore my museum of Vintage pocketable computing tech here: https://museum.tiredsysadmin.cc

Vintage Computing Festival Berlin 2024, Report

Well, I’ve made it a rule that if I’m struck by another wave of inspiration, I should make the most of it while it’s still full steam ahead. Strike while the iron is hot, as they say. Since 2023, my personal collection of vintage mobile phones has doubled, and by the time of the event, it had reached around 65 devices, 63 of which I brought to my booth at the VCFB 2024 for everyone to see and explore.

@vcfberlin Thanks a lot for sharing this! I was struck by flu in the middle of making an actual translation of the text, but that'll do it for a while! Always a pleasure to be there at VCF Berlin for our dear visitors!

Replying to
@altomare @vcfberlin there will be an honorable mention of FIC's Neo Freerunner in my presentation, alongside with Trolltech's Greenphone running Qtopia. In fact, my first EVER interaction with Linux happened on Motorola ROKR E2 (candybar in the middle), where I gained access to the shell through Telnet.

Replying to
@sebzuen regarding online access I also did the worst and the junkiest solution possible: I launched dave, a WebDAV server, on the Pi, and then hooked it through a Wireguard tunnel on a free GCP cloud instance to NGINX. So far works good, the speed is not great, but I couldn't care less since it is the junkiest setup I've ever had and the whole goal is to keep it low cost, low effort, and low maintenance.
