Invisible walls: how pedestrians navigate around social interactions

Pedestrian dynamics are characterized as complex physical systems constrained by social norms, like personal space. Yet, prior research has ignored the spatial norms imposed by others' social interactions, such as conversations. Unlike physical obstacles, the boundaries of social interactions are latent --- even more so than those of personal space --- as if they are invisible walls, and must be inferred from signs of interactional involvement. In four field experiments with 4,911 participants,

Very nice new tool showing #bike routes in #Austria with lots of configurability: https://radatlas.at/
There is a family-friendly option, but there isn't more than a handful of routes suited for families with small children. In other countries you have a real network with thousands of options, see now Denmark: https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.07029
Of course Austria has *some* mountains, but it's no excuse to have so few routes there. Anyway, nice tool!

It seems #Google #scholar has now really become #slopware. Every week I get weirder and weirder edit suggestions, this time to revert several published papers to their preprint versions..

Is #openalex the future of scientometric data/search? 🫣

Very happy this paper is published! Great+deep work led by Clément Sebastiao. We systematically study strategies to grow a transport network step by step - motivated by #bicycle networks which need to be functional as soon as possible.

They all feel a bit weird, but great to see zero cars on them and many people walking or active in the public, several cycling. Will the EU take this as a vision to implement?

Your daily dose of #motonormativity : To report a stolen e-bike battery to the Danish police, you have to select the category "Tools / number plate / car parts / fuel / electricity". I wonder how many battery thefts go un/misreported because people don't click through all categories.

Nice. Might arxiv become a "seal of quality" for published papers? That is, if a published paper hasn't gone through arxiv, it's less reliable? (Might already have been the case, but this makes it explicit)

Now we developed the loop census method, which lists each node's loops (cycles) up to day-trip length. We find that long-range cyclists can access most of the country with many choices, but families with small children can not - which could however be overcome by e-bikes.

Women's mobility networks enable more efficient travel

Our understanding of gender differences in mobility is marked by a clear tension: surveys portray women's movements as more complex than men's, while digital traces suggest less diverse travel. Here, we resolve the contradiction by modeling trajectories as networks of sequential visits, using smartphone traces linked to self-reported gender for 543,155 individuals across 10 countries. We show that the apparent conflict in the literature arises because women's mobility networks are simultaneously

Public transport in the 15-minute city

The 15-minute city is a powerful planning concept to counter car-dependence by promoting active mobility to amenities and fostering inclusive urban environments. However, this policy has challenges in amenity-poor urban peripheries. Public transport remains underexplored in this discourse despite its role in distant access. Here, we propose a framework that incorporates public transport into the 15-minute city model using openly available data. By comparing Helsinki, Madrid, and Budapest, we dem

Car Dependency in Urban Accessibility

To achieve net-zero emissions, cities must transition away from reliance on private vehicles. However, car-centric urban growth has transformed the automobile from a convenience tool into a necessity for accessing essential services, creating significant "car dependency". This study introduces a novel Car Dependency Index (CDI) that quantifies the accessibility gap between private and public transport across 18 cities in Europe and North America. Answering the dilemma of cycle lane versus shared space planning through an agent-based simulation experiment and accessibility equity analysis - Discover Cities

This paper explores a vital dilemma about the future of urban road infrastructure: whether to dedicate space for each sustainable transport mode, such as multimodal corridors, or to promote shared street spaces where different users interact. When modeling micro-mobility trips in non-homogeneous road environments, it is crucial to consider factors beyond travel cost and time, with perceived safety being a guiding parameter. Safety concerns may lead to longer travel distances and times, impacting

Urban Science Beyond Samples: Up-to-Date Street Network Models and Indicators for Every Urban Area in the World

Urban planners need up-to-date, global, and consistent street network models and indicators to measure resilience and performance, model accessibility, and target local quality-of-life interventions. This article presents up-to-date street network models and indicators for every urban area in the world. It uses 2025 urban area boundaries from the Global Human Settlement Layer, allowing users to join these data to hundreds of other urban attributes. Its workflow ingests 180 million OpenStreetMap
