i’ve been working in higher education for 35 years. for the 1st time, i’m faced with the problem of my moral code not alligning with the ethics of my employers. i’m frustated/disgusted by their promotion/support of generative #AI (#LLMs ). At every opportunity when the subject arises, i - and some colleagues - highlight the ethical issues, but all we get in return is « yes, but … ». Academia has a responsibility to do what is best for its students and society. we are currently failing.

understanding user requirements has always been the main bottleneck in software engineering… building the right thing is more important than building the thing right (although, one should strive to do both)

one good thing about students using #AI to write code is that they are learning about the importance of writing tests. unfortunately, many are also using #AI to write the tests. the positive side of this is that they are learning the importance of writing good specifications. unfortunately, many are also using #AI to write their specifications.. at this point they should be learning the importance of understanding user requirements… but the #AI cant help them, as it understands nothing.
