So I'm never going to ask the Fedi for money directly, but we are right out at the edge of our asses and it might soon be time to sell the house, which will only make the problems much worse. So here's a little #GetFediHired toot cause I ain't done that in a while, and I absolutely am available at rates that normal people can afford for small jobs - if I can hustle up 20 more hours/wk of work at my schoolbus wage, we will probably stay afloat until I find a real job again. Mainly, I'm a Linux/Unix greybearded (hair remains stubbornly dark for some reason) wizard who can run for you a single or thousands of servers, using whatever stack you want. The only reason I don't have much in the way of public servers (ie. Fedi instances of my own) is that I literally doubt my ability to manage the money costs of even the tiniest server, under current circumstances. I don't stand up anything that can't disappear forever with nobody but me noticing. I have done this professionally though. My main strength with systems, besides being willing to RTFM however boring, is that I can script every job away with great facility, so you might well have need of me and not even know it. Is there a thing you do every day that is the same steps every time, on a computer? I bet that if we sit and talk for a few minutes, I could figure out a way that a fairly quick Python script (again, my rates are very reasonable at the moment) could give you back hours of your life. Side note: If any orgs that are funding Fediverse servers out there want specifically to sponsor a Fedi server for Manitoba's Interlake region, supporting Mastodon, Lemmy and probably PixelFed, I already have interlake.online ready to setup and would not take money for the hours spent managing it. Just, if I could have those hosting costs guaranteed by something other than my bad credit, servers is what I do with my time anyways, every day. I can also teach you about Unix systems, help you internalize the concepts, etc - if you have been seeking a tutor for Linux/Unix servers, I am your guy. Identify your end goal ("I want to host all my own media and use Jellyfin," for instance) and I will walk you through the steps and concepts involved. In most cases, it will be pretty darn simple, probably, after you get comfortable with a few things. That said, I specialize in the hopeless cases - I once was handed a guy who had risen through union ranks and never touched a computer and kinda refused to, until this new position, in which he absolutely had to, but was genuinely ignorant of everything, everything about them. After three days with me, in which we drilled on the very very basics ("this is a mouse..."), he told me he was going out to buy himself a computer. I think it was realizing how useful google search... used to be. I am not a hacker or security expert, not suitable for your colour teams or whatever. I know how to sanely secure a network and ensure data integrity, but as MWL puts it, nothing is secure, everything is horrible. We take our snapshots, do our backups, and be ready so when someone messes up, all I gotta do is restore the backups and everything is going again the same day. There's no beating them all the time everywhere, there's just being ready and solidly protected for the slipups. Anyways, other than that I am musical and can knock off any non-gatekept music format you can provide a sample of. Like, if you want a song that hits more or less like your favorite metal track for your podcast theme, I can make a similar but original riff/orchestration, as long as the thing is comprehendable through "normal" music theory (meter, key, etc, are all stably defined is what I mean)). I'm sitting in my music studio's control room as I type, it doubles as my work from home office. Might be someone else's music studio soon I guess. Can teach guitar and basics of some other instruments. No Music degree, just talent and years of doing it, see notes above on my teaching ability. I will keep you excited, doing the songs you want to learn. And I'm not a bad rhetorician. If you need strong verbiage for any reason, show me the style you need and I can produce text for you. Obviously most people will be using LLMs for that last one especially, but it absolutely is a talent of mine, as long as I fully understand what is desired. I can imitate most accents accurately if I listen to them for a while, but I can do that with text also. I live in Manitoba, Canada, as you might have guessed, open to remote work in most places, subject to being able to verify your company actually exists. No AI used here, please respectfully do the same.

@bruce@darkmoon.social I want the larger size so I can cram lots of batteries in there, and ideally give it equal effective horsepower to the old system, while it doubles as a battery tank for the house during blackouts. I am neither an ICE engineer nor an Electrical one, but conceptually, Batteries+ElectricMotor(s) seems a great deal simpler than all the factors going into an ICE, heat, exhaust, timing of the explosions, etc. In the good, solarpunk future, our whole continent will look like Havana, classic cars everywhere, except they'll all be Electric jalopies. @huitema@social.secret-wg.org @jssfr@zombofant.net @danlew@androiddev.social

So I dunno exactly how #FediBlock works but @adengolbpd@friendica.world doesn't look to me like it's made of meat. An instance that would allow that to happen is also probably a problem, but that's all I gotta say about that.

I am still an OpenSCAD guy, strictly because I've grown so comfortable with its simplicity, but it's been very gratifying to watch @freecad@social.freecad.org grow into a mature and robust app over the last few years. I have a pet theory that 3D apps of all kinds will be the first of the corporate apps to just rot out on the vine because every User and most studios stop using them. I think this is the case, because it is exceedingly difficult to fake your way through 3D, whether you're an animator, VFX, or an engineer, amateur or otherwise. If you're working virtual 3D things, you have done some serious woodshedding to get there, and so as much as Adobe/Autodesk have traditionally been able to leverage a lot of dev power and therefore were genuinely better, nowadays there is not really a lot you can't do with Free apps, with a bit more effort perhaps. I'll say one thing more, Blender was never the reason for any trouble Tangent Animation experienced. We are the future, if there is a technological future in the offing.

My hobby: deciding to do a deep dive on grep instead of an extra ten seconds of pageup/pagedown in order to distract myself from the three major-but-doable-but-never-actually-done-em-before tasks I have assigned myself today. My other hobby: loading up Mastodon to toot about my struggles with focus, after catching myself after only wasting about a minute on the grep deep dive, but here's what I was trying to do: The thing I am grepping for has a number of hits, each of them with a varying number of -A lines needed to quickly get the information I need. While this data is not reliably sized, it is trailed by a blank line, so what I would like grep to do, is find the terms I give it, and then -A until it sees a blank line. Probably Id need to deep dive regex for that. Haha. Send me your witchy focusing mojo, fedi, for I need it more now than ever before. #AuDHD I was less tweaked going into every single one of my University finals. Gaaah!

@lcamtuf@infosec.exchange replying so I remember to come back and read the responses. I don't think my story will win, but the best I can think of was very early and bitch basic: I had a DSL connection at the time, which very frequently would hang up in a way that required the modem be power cycled. I had recently acquired a first-gen Raspberry Pi, so I went and bought a suitable relay, and wired it up under the Pi's control, so I could power cycle the modem from anywhere in the house. It worked great, for a few months, at which point we upgraded to a Cable connection that was much faster and stable. No great struggle, no deep insight, just using tech stuff to make life easier.

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net I think, though, that Python probably has a much larger community of active users with a "deep" understanding of the language, owing to the fact that Python is just that much easier to learn, and therefore, will have that many more users. "Deep" in quotes cause the whole point of Python is to not make you think too deeply at first, or ever, if you don't want to. C/C++ you need to do some understanding in order to make good use of em.

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net I used it on a job, had learned it via an online course for a lark, and then found myself running ragged chasing crashed blade servers, but aware that I had two Python APIs and a way to kick them via SSH, and after a bit of very basic scripting, suddenly I had hours and hours of free time, in which I built out some web UI tooling to allow others to manage those blades with ease. For the right jobs, it's just extremely useful. I feel like I should mention Perl again here for some reason. 😜

Since the trailing lines varied, but were all terminated by a blank line, I was looking for effectively "-A UntilBlankLine" as opposed to the string "-A". @ianturton@mapstodon.space @Unixbigot@aus.social @jpm@aus.social @DamienWise@aus.social @fast_code_r_us@floss.social Strictly speaking, isn't GPS superfluous to a shock event logger? Bringing this up because I want one of these devices as well, for my guitars and things, and as far as I know GPS modules are still quite expensive, compared to simple accelerometers, which at a sufficiently fast poll rate would tell the full story of the object's mechanical journey. I would like if we could all get together spec something that could be released as OSH on PCBway or wherever, and end users could order the boards fully populated, 3D print or otherwise build a case, and go. Ideally for less than fifty bucks, cause neither disabled people nor professional musicians are generally that well off. I think the GPS would eat a lot of that budget, and also draw unwanted attention. What we want is a snitch, that leaves your hands knowing the time, and logs the forces that act upon it until it comes back to your hands. Did it suddenly move six feet in half a second? That's all you need to know, really. The distances are not GPS-relevant, for shock alone. edit: it very much could, with the right MCU, integrate sensors for a case or box being opened, piezo sensors for physical impacts, as well. These would be cheap and easy.

@blogdiva@mastodon.social The cool thing is that Republicans generally have no real worldview at all, so once they start really thinking about US interests in a more realistic way, I expect it'll be the GOP that rushes to nationalize shit back. They have no actual worldview, remember, so a moment will come when a pivot to full-on Aristocratic Dirt Communism wrapped in nationalist blather will make the most sense. We will all get to enjoy the drawing and quartering of anything that smells like an oligarch, though. It'll be some apocalyptic scumbag like Mike Johnson who is in control at that point.

I know that "woke" is a poisoned term, but people really were just sleeping their way through a takeover plan that was pursued for five decades, in plain sight, and now people are all shocked about it. Amy Goodman has been explaining this the whole time, as have many Leftist periodicals that have now died off or transitioned to web-only. My grandmother was on the editorial board of Canadian Dimension for years, when it was paper. Usians who are surprised are my target here, because if you're surprised, you were probably complicit during 99 and Occupy.

So hey #LinuxMusicians #LinuxAudio The amount of choices for synths these days is overwhelming. I am an old man who is not that interested in many of the new sounds (other than Synthwave and Vaporwave, which pander to my personal nostalgias), but I do want to know, what is the best MiniMoog type monosynth sound available among the Free Software options out there? There seems to be nothing that is way out in front of the pack, that I'm aware of, for that specific sound. I'm thinking that really nailing it will probably involve a chain, so I'm probably really after the best basic synth engine, and then the best resonant filter plugins, which may not come in the same package...

The up side of #Gardening: at some point, you get a bunch of food that is fleeting in its longevity, but better than any you eat the rest of the year, all things considered. The down side: Sometimes they need to be processed quickly, and sometimes the whole day that it takes to, say, turn a bunch of fresh picked peppers into a bunch of Chiles Rellenos, arrives on the same day that for instance is your first day with a new music tool that you ordered and paid for almost a year ago and is finally here, a Behringer XR-18 specifically, which is here to end all of my headaches with playing live. Oh, I need to route the 58 through the outboard reverb and out, while the harp mic goes through my amp modelling device and a verb/echo, while the guitar switches between the piezo pickup and the electric ones? (push button) Let's do it. But even though I've done my C reading and gotten some outdoor cleanup/winter prep done and could now theoretically head out to the studio and start making plans about what sort of box I'm gonna tote my whole musical world around in from now on my other hobby has these peppers sitting around getting wrinkly and the only recipe I can think of is Chiles Rellenos, which is just a wild amount of work. You have to blister the peppers then let them steam while they cool, and meanwhile you have to roast your tomatoes and get your sauce ready which is a whole other afternoon-long ordeal I swear, even the youtube guy I'm following for this, he pauses halfway through and points out that what Usians pay for this dish at restaurants is, well, it basically amounts to labour theft. He didn't say that, but this is a lotta friggin work this anyways after the peppers have steamed and cooled, you gotta do some fuckin surgery on the fuckers, scoop out all the seeds and slimy innards, all being careful to save your stem to grab onto later, just enough slit to push all that cheesykaysow in there, and then, you're basically fuckin Jame Gumm at this point, you seal em back up with a skewer so they hopefully stay shut. Then do you bread these maybe, dip em in a nice batter? FUCK NO YOU DAMN DIRTY APE We're making a fuckin meringue is what we're dipping those tasty garden fresh little bastards in, and then we're deep frying those little fuckers real good, cause fuck you that's why. I feel like everyone should have to do this once, before they're allowed to order Chiles Rellenos in restaurants. I just finished blistering them on the bbq, they are now steaming together in a glass bowl with a plate over em. They all died with an awful sound. Strongly considering skipping the deep fry aspect, and instead preparing some sort of rice/meat/cheese filling to put in em, and they can then be roasted again with more cheesykaysow I feel like I'm letting myself down if I don't go all the way. I wonder if there's an air fryer way to do these, I totally don't mind the idea of doing a couple at a time on the counter, but I try to refrain from putting a lot of greasy vapour in the air so if I was gonna go deep fry it'd be out by the garage. The deep frying being another thing I need to build some sort of easily draggable box/grease catching undercarriage for...

Is anyone interested in a livestream of a fresh #FreeBSD install with ZFS boot environment? Cause I'm about to do that, and I have an HDMI capture thingy. Youtube seems to be fine with me going live now, the last time I tried it they said I was not allowed to just do it, I don't remember why, but now I can it seems. In theory we've got 25G fibre but I have no idea how true that is. It's definitely fibre at least. I'm trying to get a better handle on #OBS, particularly, how people implement the onscreen crawl, chat widget, etc. I assume it's just basic scripting at most, but it's all still a big black box to me for the most part. Right now I just wanna get more comfortable with operating it.

Someone expressing their ongoing shock that Roe was killed. I remember when I read in the aughts that GOP parties basically controlled all the state politics to speak of, I don't pay close enough attention to have just known that, but I was kind of a USA Politics junkie at the time. Our own politics were chronically boring and not that upheaved, even under Harper. But it radically reshaped my perception of the USA, seeing how incredibly engaged the Christian Right was in running candidates at every level, while the nominal Usian Left slept through it, satisfying themselves with Rainbow Capitalism (ie. rather than having a problem with ~400 or so people having control of our society's economy, they just want half those people to be women and minorities) ...and sad to say, I was not and remain not shocked. None of you want to hear it, but the fascist scumbags did earn this. They were pushing pamphlets, protesting clinics, and running candidates while the "left" were indulging themselves in smug capitalist tailwinds and the Dem establishment did their insider trading and voting for middle east destruction and such. Hollywood movies with lead characters of the right genetics passed for civil rights progress. Usians to the left of Hitler really need to stop with the entitlement, and start earning the country they thought was their birthright. Something something tree of liberty, you craven fucks.

I have until someone said the name on a podcast earlier this week believed that Forgejo was spelled "Forgego" and was a Golang project, people do love putting 'go' in the name of Go projects. Just telling on my gringo self.

What are the rest f the Vincent Price movies this month on #Monsterdon again? I'm scrolling down the hashtag and I know The Bat is coming but I just keep reading that over and over, I know the other two are also Vincent movies. Asking because we are either about to watch The Witchfinder General, or pick another movie. Turns out my copy of The Devils is the Italian dub.

I wonder who operates the closest Cannabis retail operation to Steinbach? Is there a shop right at the RM/Town border? Do they need hired security? Who provides it? Mostly, the old black market dealers must be laughing their fucking arses off.
