Avatar: A lego figurine with a worried look on its face, wearing a classic lego spaceship shirt and a space helmet. It is holding a whisk and is flanked by a cat. In the background, a rocket and star are mounted on a wall.
Banner: Wide panoramic view of the southern Milky Way crossing over into a pink aurora australis, with the large magellanic cloud above.
Just wandered into the back yard, pulled
some leaves off the assorted self-seeded lettuces, and there we go. No supermarket cellophane packet needed.
And whilst the seestars were spotting nebulae, the RedCat was staring at galaxies for a few hours.
This is a part of the Fornax cluster. Its most famous member is the barred spiral of NGC1365, just left of center.
Not too far away in the sky, but all the way over at bottom right here, sits Fornax A, a giant elliptical galaxy with visible shells of stars around it. The shells of stars mean that it has interacted with and probably eaten other galaxies.
The name means it is the most radio-bright thing in Fornax, so it probably has a supermassive black hole at its center that is actively munching things.
Also note the little galaxy at middle right, that looks like it has a ring around it. That is generally a sign of a direct hit by another galaxy.
The densest part of the cluster sits towards the top left. There is much more to it, but my camera sensor is too small to catch it all at this focal length :-)
120 x 60 seconds with a RedCat 61, UV/IR cut filter and ASI294MC Pro camera on an AM5. Stacked and processed in siril, with rc-astro tools.
Busy on my walk by the river this morning. Didn’t see any snakes, but given kooka is there for breakfast they must be about.
I wheeled out the full observatory the other day, which means I also got some data using the non-Pro seestar. I guess that’s the S30 Amateur now? Maybe I should rename it.
As yet I don’t have two wedges, so this one was snapping 30 second subs in AltAz mode. Still nice!
The weather has turned, so no more imaging from Melbourne for the next few days. I still have more spoils from the weekend, though.
I finally finished a mosaic of the Lobster Claw and Cats Paw nebulae. These sit in the Milky Way near Scorpius and as with all red nebulae, they're hydrogen playing at being a neon sign.
As the Milky Way core sets around midnight, we're getting a view *out* of the Milky Way when we look straight up in the early hours. With less crap in the way, we can see distant galaxies and globular clusters.
NGC 253 (The Silver Dollar galaxy) is one of the largest and brightest - wider on the sky than the full Moon - and it sits near globular cluster NGC 288.
Finally, as summer approaches, the Magellanic Clouds are starting to rise in our southern skies. I used the light pollution filter on the Small cloud, so we get a good view of all the enormous hydrogen nebulae embedded in it.

I can highly recommend against inhaling chimmichuri.
When the leaders of AI companies all say the technology is dangeroous and needs to slow down, there is literally nothing stopping them spending their VC money on EMPs and solving their pearl clutching problems.
Not that I’ve got any chance of seeing it here, what with cloud, but Venus and the cressy Moon will be close together and very pretty tonight.
If it’s clear where you are, look west from about half an hour after sunset. Aaaah. See?
And now that the Sun is a bit higher in the sky and clears the slightly-too-tall trees in the back yard, the in-laws have also stopped using electricity from the grid.
The battery charges to full by about 1pm and it’s all export after that. And that’s with them not having changed their power usage behaviour at all.
Just need to get their stove top replaced with an induction one (which apparently requires some re-wiring) and then gas can be disconnected.
☄️ And here is the properly processed version, with cloudy subs excluded from the stack.
It looks like all the howtos for disabling AI shit on iOS27 are written by people who had manually turned them onto begin with. I’ve never had that crap and I don’t see half the settings I should apparently have.
So we’re going from patches of overnight frost on Friday to a top of 27 on Sunday.
Shoving a garlic, rosemary and sea salt fougasse into my face.
Several goes at it and much messing about later, I have what seems to be a stable 15Mbit link to the roof.
Channeling Ivanova today.
