My brother showing me his social media on his phone, I see the nasty comments on public pages/spaces, and I'm in a shock. I'm glad I switched solely to Mastodon since a few months ago. Public comments here vastly lean towards being nice. The horrific corporate social media is just too toxic, I cannot imagine going back there. #socialmedia #algorithm

Big corporations AI train on public posts and possibly private ones, from big social media, like X's AI and Meta AI for example. I hope they don't get to Mastodon posts from different instances, that would be scary, if they harvest content generated by us to train their models without our consent.

Switched to FOSS, Linux, and decentralized social media (Mastodon, Lemmy, PeerTube) a few months ago and honestly? it's been life-changing.

no more doom-scrolling Instagram or Facebook. no more anxiety about missing out. no more comparing myself to people's highlight reels. the constant itch to check Snapchat? gone.

using tools that respect my privacy and attention—instead of mining them—has made me feel genuinely awake again. less envy, less FOMO, less addiction pulling at my brain.

turns out when you're not being algorithmically manipulated, you actually feel better. who knew? 🙃

Mary Parker Follett, the forgotten star of management sciences. She produced work during the 1920s regarding the power of integration and working in teams. Her thinking was very advanced for her time. To this day, her work remains more relevant and vital in today's management settings. Plenty of directions today's management and business paradigms are orienting back to the scientific management era of Fredrick Taylor and others. We keep running towards KPI's, measurements, and being obsessed with improving the numbers of those measurements. However, a genuine organisation will ensure that there is a qualitative assurance of their processes. I think it is what we are forgetting these days: that integration, power-with, and democratisation of the institution are what ultimately matter for a successful future. #management #Follett #KPI #Power

@mpg@grumble.social I'm a Debian user and very new to Linux, only several months in. However, people are moving to NetBSD ( Not Linux), for their clear no AI policies. But when it comes to any Linux distros, it's only Gentoo which is recommended by folx. As for the kernel, everyone is saying that the kernel has been receiving AI contributions for a while now.

Today I learned that there are some proprietary components in #Linux #distros. I learned the deep stuff like firmware is no escape. But there are some distros who will include #proprietary stuff for workflow. I checked my #Mint and there was nothing, or at least the check told me, I'm as #FOSS as if I'd be on #Debian. This made me relax a bit. But also learned that Debian gives a priority to Foss stuff more than any distro out there. That's a nice thing to know.

I set up #rclone today on my #Linux_Mint, I'm a first time ever user of Linux #distros. I had to mount it myself, followed so many steps and also used the command thru the #Terminal to make it start sync automatically once I reboot my device. Otherwise, the guide told me I have to put a manual Terminal command each time. I feel like a programmer LOL. People say Linux Mint works out of the box and it's the most friendly distro and suitable for laymen like me who migrated from Windows. However, I'm making so much efforts on Linux, they're rewarding TBH, I fee victory each time. But now I feel any Linux distro user, even for #Mint will need to learn and try harder. It's not too easy as they say.

I'm itching to start using a new #distro. As a recent #Linux user '#Mint' since a few months ago, I started to feel the urge to try a new distro with a new #DE. I have in mind to try #Debian with #Gnome. My search said Debian is community-driven, their #governance is #decentralised, #democratic, and more aligned with #FOSS values than other distro out there. If I want the same values, I should choose #KDEPLASMA. But, I really don't want to currently. I'm finding myself curious about Gnome ATM. I'm in despair if my combination is fit. 😅

Today I learned the ( .Desktop) on my #Linux distro. I didn't know we had to do some effort to make some programs appear on the start button as any other software. It's rewarding to explore on Linux. But also I'm not a tech savvy person. I hope I don't face a closed road someday. So far, I solved all things that faced me through reading and maybe coincidence LOL.

I wish #ProtonMail would sync files to its Proton Drive on Linux distros, same as I used to in my Windows. It's a good alternative for OneDrive, and it's free. I only need 5GB max. I've been reading about #NextCloud but I don't want to pay something like £10 a month. #Proton_mail #ProtonDrive #sync #Linux #linux_distro #FOSS #SovereignCloud #Libreoffice

I didn't do any Linux distro hopping, I'm only a recent #Mint user. I think Mint is said to work out of the box because you don't need to configure audio, sound, Bluetooth, connectivity by yourself. It will work. Hence, I think people describing Mint as too easy is just an over exaggeration. Because once you need to have relevant apps, programming and softwares, you'll start tinkering and troubleshooting. I have no expertise, but I'd assume as any other easy or hard distro out there.

After a thought, I use SPSS and Nvivo Software on windows, now I switched to #Linux #Mint, I should try #Wine tomorrow that's everyone talking about. If Wine was easy and clear to me. I can dumb Windows once for all. I don't have another high gaming or other advanced softwares requirements.

I'm learning about #Wayland watching videos and reading articles. I had no idea about the current discussions in the #Linux community. What prompted this is news today about #Linux #mint tailoring Wayland. After all, I'm excited, because eventually all of this means more flexibility and security for Linux #distros. I was thinking of having #i3 on my #Linux_Mint but I'm not sure if I'll actually need it or if it will be worthy for me. I open multiple apps and browser tabs while working on my machine.

@foolishowl@social.coop Yeah, in an interview with KM Rowling, despite she's rich, she has a personal assistant. Also other rich people reported instead of having butlers, cooks, cleaners as the rich of the past, they have just a personal assistant and outsource extra services when needed.

@TerminalTilt@social.terminaltilt.com I love the fact you acknowledge that if someone stayed on Mint, it's totally valid. There's so much snobbery online regarding distros. Something I didn't like. I'm happy to hear you say that. I totally think it's okay to stay on Mint as well, and one will learn a lot with time. In regards to governmentality issue. I'm so new to this world, but I'd want something truly Foss and truly decentralised, free as in freedom, and driven by community.

I don't know what will be my journey with #Linux #distros in the future. As a new comer, I'm using #Linuxmint. I'm obsessed with #FOSS and Linux now. I feel I'll be exploring new distros for the sake of learning, learning about computers, and how things work, it is rich. But eventually, I feel I'd settle on something that works, as I need to be productive and take care of my work/job. So eventually, I see myself going back to Mint or even something similar. Going back to a distro that'll stay out of my way, let me focus on my work, something reliable and stable.

I present myself as an academic on another instance. I want to say that academics on Mastodon are waaayyy healthier than what I used to see on Facebook and Twitter. The bragging and flaunting they did were unbearable. I had to unfollow myself from academics spheres there. Hence, here I'm enjoying, learning and engaging as people want to help, share problems, and navigate academic life, not brag they're the best.

@kpl@social.lol Good luck in your trip. I didn't find an specific guide, but gradually I did it. I even made at "Disroot" email, which is FOSS, and gives me 2GB of cloud storage from Nextcloud for FREE. They are not much, but I'm hesitant to pay attention first. I still have OneDrive but it's for my work and I have to use it. But for personal research and work I moved to Nextcloud and proton drive.

In my replacement of apps on both my computer and phone with #FOSS apps, I'm content with every alternative, even after a while for some. Some are even way better than the proprietary ones. However, for my phone, I miss how snappy and smart Gboard is (my phone keyboard). I have #Heliboard, it is nice and all. But I'm a heavy texter, Gboard makes me text seamlessly.though I understand it's this good because of the immense amount of users data they collect without consent. So, I guess, I'll stick to the principle, and use Heliboard.

"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, one of the most beloved ASL poems: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just about fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

The #GrapheneOS story circulating about a man in USA wiping all this phone contents when the police asked for a PIN, is AWESOME. I mean the capability of privacy phones. I still cannot have this ATM. But, when in my country, the police seized my phone because my gay date set me up to steal my money, I couldn't wipe anything, and I struggled a lot with the court, lawyers, and society to get away with being "gay". If I had such capability phone, I'd just given them numbers that would wipe all.
