Conservatives at least in the US have a kink for humiliation. Just the most recent big example being Kristy Nome's husband. Which, hey; enjoy your kinks. Not here to admonish anyone for their kinks. Just for violating consent and making everyone else a party to it.

If all the other top level donators haven't done that by now I don't think there's much to worry about. And if they had plans to, I think they would have to face off against the other top level donators. So it wouldn't be that easy either.

Using the services of others has always been a trade-off. Though I'm not very concerned with them knowing that my lights come on at Sunset and go off at 11:00. Or that I change the color of them sometimes. And if they want to watch my fish tanks or the grass grow, well I suppose that's on them. Honestly if you have a smartphone it's a bigger intrusion and risk than any of these other things.

He doesn’t care. He’s actually doing great on his grift. He’s raked in millions if not billions to his personal pockets. The American people are the ones taking it on the chin. And the fact that he and Republicans aren’t alarmed by their polling should alarm everyone else. People need to prepare themselves. The crash is coming. Trump doesn’t care, Republicans are too cowardly, and Democrat establishment is so cordial and bipartisan with them, they’ve become a version of them from 30 to 40 years ago. If trump croaks or is killed tomorrow, it’s not going to stop any of this.

Init scripts are just scripts. Technically, they don't introduce any unique vulnerabilities of their own. Just the flaws in the shell itself or server binaries. A poorly written script absolutely can and will still fuck your day up. SystemD is a program. Which could introduce its own unique buffer overflows or use after free opportunities. I've not heard of any. But its possible. However, its standard set of interfaces and systems make the risks of writing your own bad scripts or just using other people's random bad scripts like we used to much less an issue.

Probably because the devs didn't want to. Which is reason enough. My experience tells me the krita crew are more focused on painting and illustration. Could animation be shoehorned in there? Sure. Would it likely be as good of an app for animation? Likely not. I love blender and use it all the time for modeling etc. You can also NLE in blender. It doesn't currently hold a candle to kden live or davinci in a number of areas for that. But you technically can. Same goes for compositing etc. Again it's not top of the heap for that. They're much more focused on modeling and some on rendering. Which have both made massive strides. Splitting their focus further likely wouldn't have made things better over all. More likely worse. I'm glad to see this app and will be checking for AUR or flatpak soon as I get home myself.

So pretty much focused on svg animation. Not necessarily with rasterization or beyond. Makes sense. Something more akin to the old flash animator etc.

The thing is the law is often not about Justice. And I don't think either of us are lawyers. But I don't think you quite understand the difficulty legally of what you're proposing. And how I mentioned elsewhere that it is much more likely to hurt the people you would rather see helped than the people you want it to. We just have to sort of do our thing for the most part and help those we want to help. And just worry after the fact about those that have wronged us and need to be punished. Open source as we know it wouldn't really exist with that sort of specificity and pettiness in exclusion. Overall I think the fact that we have it even if people we would rather not have, do as well. Is the better than not.

This is a good point and important philosophy. None of us want to be taken advantage of or used. But we shouldn't let that stop us from mutual aid and building community. Whether it's in the physical space or code space. People are always going to take advantage at some point. There isn't anything effective you can do to preemptively stop it. Attempts to are much more likely to hinder or hurt the very people you want to help more. Time is better spent pursuing the abusers rather than trying to guard against them.

I can synpathize with the devs as they are simply taking the minimal steps they can. To avoid being targeted by these failing states. But yeah, what's this guys story. Someone suddenly contributing so narrowly to such a broad slate of projects isn't common.

Honestly with the way meta is playing the states with this. I could easily see them paying someone to do this. Just look at all the ignorant reactionary people this is stirring up. Attacking projects made of volunteer devs. It's a good way to possibly hobble or even kill some projects. As the devs aren't being paid enough to handle the BS from either end.

Black goes with everything. But as @Sergio@piefed.social mentioned there's usually a bit more to it. Solid black is still boring. Functional but boring. Traditionally I'd say we're a bit more two tone. Black is often the base. But you'll generally see accents or a pop of color in there. Blood red crimsons, deep royal purples, shades of green and pumpkin orange are very common. Even if its just laces or a few tchotchkes here and there.

An there is a newer sub culture now literally called pastel goth heh. Not to mention those that glow in the dark.

Yup, the original look was individual expression and rebellion. Treating it as a uniform or mandatory style is antithetical. Dress as black as your soul, or just wear T-shirt and jeans. It shouldn't impact your cred. And if it does then your trying to join an adjacent clique. Or someone just aping the style above all else.

Technically, sysv everything was just a file full of instructions for the shell to parse and initialize. Human readable "technically". It was simple and light weight. SystemD is a bit heavier and more complex as a system service binary. But that load and complexity is generally offset by added features that are extremely nice to have. Providing much more standardized targets and configuration iirc. I had to search and dig trying to figure out how to set up services properly for my distro, back in the 90s. And when/how to start/restart them. There wasn't one way to do it all. SysD made it all much more standard, simple, and clear. It's biggest sin, is that it's one more binary attack surface that might be exploited.

Sometimes what you don't say is more important than what you do say. Many on the left were manipulated and used to boost the fascist. Something many to this day are still too sensitive about to acknowledge. There wasn't Mass coverage and protest that all major party candidates supported the genocide. Only Harris. In all the Zionist and oligarch media, every day it was wall to wall coverage of the people calling Harris out over it. It was legitimately used to launder Donald Trump's image. The fact that the vitriol and hatred that anyone who pointed this out got back then. And still gets today, proves that many failed to learn the important lesson. While they were absolutely correct to criticize Harris for her support. They were wrong to only focus on her over it. Even if symptoms like trump and everyone in his administration met the gallows tomorrow. These same people will continue to naively allow themselves to be weaponized against the achievable over the perfect. Ultimately getting more symptoms elected in the future, and allowing the Overton window to ratchet further and further to the right. National Democrats are horrible allies, they're unfortunately the best we have.

The ease of use. Setting up IP cameras to be safety accessed from outside your local network is not easy for most people. And there are legitimate uses even in the home. I'm currently working on getting things all switched over to POE IP cameras, contained in a separate VLAN behind an instance of frigate. Your average consumer's brains would have been dribbling from their ear before the comma in that last sentence.

That speaks more to a lack of better options. Than anyone's desire to actually broadcast their children. If someone were making an affordable camera system with a hardware management Hub local that you could log in through tail scale or similar. People would be clamoring for it. Unfortunately right now with the AI bubble is about the worst possible time to launch such a product or project. Even a formerly cheap of single board computer such a Raspberry Pi. Which used in the cost about $35 on its own now costs closer to 100. Although there are a number of good inexpensive ESP camera modules now.

Well, those donating time and resources often get extra consideration. But Ton has been fiercely independent for decades. And even though he's stepped down from his leadership role. I think the board he helped put in place has things in good hands. They, KDE etc have forged their own path and shown the viability of their models. They'd be fools to abandon that or relinquish control after 30 years. Tons have come and gone with little fan fair. Blender OTOH has quietly made inroads into industry and the hearts of many many people. I have used blender since the mid 90s. Where it is today compared to back then is unimaginable. I can't wait to have my mind blown by where they go in the future. Nodes and simulation are really shaping up. Who knows, between them and the love the NLE editor has been getting. Adobe, Houdini, and even Nuke might get some competition.

Who said people weren't? Remember, projecting your behavior and "morals" onto groups you don't know speaks more about you than them. When it comes to infants it can be great peace of mind. Breaking the instinct for many to constantly enter and disturb their rest, to make sure they're still breathing etc. I agree they shouldn't be broadcast to the Internet or 3rd parties. Or placed in sensitive areas, or substitute parental interaction. But they have value. There just needs to be better methods for access not designed to be controlled by 3rd parties. For any new smart devices I get, matter or zwave/ZigBee are mandatory.

Yes, to put it mildly technically. Blacks and dark bits are often the first things quantized to hell in modern codex. They’re one of the areas that the eye is generally least sensitive to. And they will be one of the first things to show if you over compressed too much.

If it’s something I really want. Absolutely. These days handbrake is pretty much all you need. We’ve come a long way since my days moderating over on the Doom 9 Forum way back in the early 2000s. Codec wise there really isn’t anything that would be more recommended for black and white. Black and white are colors. 16 million Shades of Black and White are still 16 million colors if that makes any sense. So a color encoder is generally going to do just as well. You’re not really going to save that much just because something is black and white. The codec that you might want to choose will generally depend more on the resolution of your content, and the hardware you intend to play it back on. Older Hardware might only support h264. Also DVDs, anything newer than h264 doesn’t really save you a lot of space. And takes more time to encode. H264 also uses smaller macro blocks which are generally preferable for lower resolution. When it comes to HD or 4K sources. Then h265 or AV1 should probably be your go-to’s. Unless again you are limited by playback hardware. The settings again depend a lot on your content. If it’s largely static scenes with Talking Heads. You can get by with some pretty insanely low bit rates. If it’s an action movie with lots of motion all over the place explosions etc etc etc. You’re going to need every bit of bitrate you can get. When it comes to basic settings? Under the video dialogue in handbrake. Whenever you select and encoder towards the bottom left there is a slider labeled preset. Which is sort of misleading. It is the motion estimation quality. You would generally never want it set to anything higher than medium and preferably closer to slower. As the name implies slower is slower. But it performs much better motion estimation. Which will create less blocking and artifacts when constrained for bitrate. Leaving more for those blacks which are often the first thing sacrificed. Bitrate wise. And easy rule of thumb is previous generations bit rate. Ripping DVD in h264 a VCD bitrate of 1–2 Mbps is pretty solid. 1080p? DVD bitrates of 5-9 Mbps in h265 or AV1 will save lots of space and keep excellent video quality. 4k, 20 to 35 Mbps h265 or AV1. A bit wasteful but generally visually lossless. If you take the time and do 2 pass you can go lower still.

Well we have the primaries at least. I don’t doubt the DNC will be fingering the scales hard. For all of Obama problems. He is proof their rigging can be subverted. I just hope at least AOC or someone better runs in the primaries. And if there are several. Those trailing behind if there is a clear leader will drop and get behind them. Because we know the establishment will line up behind Newsom or Harris as soon as they can.

No one would call you one for that. Newsom is 100% owned and sucks hard. Now maybe if you attack people calling for solidarity to keep a Republican from office. Without offering a viable alternative. But let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. With no incumbent at least we should be guaranteed a primary. No doubt it will still be a shit show. But hopefully we can take him out in the primary.

Bigger size is usually better. Unfortunately an encoding is only as good as the person who did it. There’s any number of filtering or higher quality settings that can be used. But people often avoid to save time. So you’re better off to find groups or individuals who is work you like. And sticking with that. On Modern CPUs you can rip through high def video faster than real-time speed if you set the quality low enough. And the bitrate High enough. But an experienced encoder knows the combination of filtering and settings to use to bring out the maximum visual quality with minimal file size. And when it comes to that I tend to do all my own encodings.
