And voted. Somehow I managed not to grumble as I did it or deface my ballots with what I thought of the question. ;)

I never thought of it before, but when you're an adult you get candy for weeks before Halloween ;)

For those who know of it at all, please be aware that I've allowed Fossil Line Systems to shut down. Henceforth anyone claiming to be them is not me. ;)

Hey businesses. Bad enough you phone with prerecorded or text to speech messages, but don't start with "this is an important message". That's how the spammers start. Just about hung up on the electric company this morning. :) (fortunately I listened and it's only going to cost $300, it might have been much more! Now where do i get xbox gift cards?) j/k

Well, the Alberta referendum voted to stay in Canada (by 75%), and not to pull out of federal programs (barely), but every other racist question passed. Barely, but fuck this province.

4 is a guaranteed random number. Stop assigning other meanings to it. The original was the best. ;)

If you built it with "abc", you wouldn't have these problems! That's right. You'd have a DIFFERENT set of problems. THERE ARE NO MAGIC BULLETS. This was published and made available to all in 1986 (well, they said SILVER, but it's the same deal.) You will never find that ONE missing thing that fixes everything in software. You've had 40 years now to get that through your head. I don't have to be patient any more.

"Programmers are therefore something of an anomaly: they are employees, but they are in a position to control how they will go about doing their programs—the final product—as well as the form the final product will take. Not surprisingly, managers and employers find this an intolerable situation. It is intolerable not because employee workplace control is less efficient but because employee control of the workplace threatens managerial authority. In this sort of situation, managers and...

What are we using to watch BluRay discs on Windows these days? Is it still a pay-only environment? I know about alternatives. I specifically want the disc to spin.

Well, after years of everyone telling me they hate my story processing and all that crap at UFW, I ran it MY way for a year. Now I'm ready to hand off, but.. no volunteers. I'll be honest, I'm kind of tired of the half-motivation side. They're good people, yeah, but they aren't invested. Meanwhile I've no choice but to be 150% overloaded on just this one while they are telling me about all the other feds they work at. The good news is we aren&amp...

I've always been a little annoyed by 'FYI' messages, which come off as "I know more than you, here's the proof". I will now respond with "IAI" - I Am Informed, which suitably relieves of any responsibility for the information while being just as dismissive. I feel much better about this. ;)

If all you're going to do is shrink wrap it, and put it in a plastic case for display, why don't you just 3d print a replica, put a nice new sticker on it, and display that?

Nice to see that all cell phone companies are out to scam you. Long ago Foxx and I left AT&T because there was no coverage at our new place. A couple months later we BOTH got "overage charges" on accounts that didn't exist. They were small - both were 25 cents. It took 90 minutes to get AT&T to cancel them. Imagine what a company that size earns just charging people 25 cent nonsense charges that people just pay cause it's easier? I switched to...

Took a bit of poking, but I got it to work using MAME. This patch unlocks Dali Llama and Karate Croc at startup, removes the name and password screens, and unlocks all moves automatically. For the US version of Brutal Paws of Fury for the Sega CD. https://harmlesslion.com/temp/Brutal%20-%20Paws%20of%20Fury%20Patch%20(USA).zip https://youtu.be/NfG2_RE3-AA?si=z84UoQ51ZSLLC5-9

Watching the original He-Man... it's one of the episodes that used to bug me as a kid. "Three on a Dare" - ignoring the side plots about kids and dares, the primary push for He-Man was to break into Snake Mountain and steal rainbow crystals from Skeletor. He chose to sneak in, and attempt to steal the crystals before Skeletor noticed. Bad guy or not, this is one of the stories where the bad guy was just minding his own business, and the good guys were actually the ones...

We've had machine-learned OCR for a good 40 years. It didn't require massively parallel GPUs, huge datacenters, or even what we'd consider powerful machines to train, since they only needed a few hundred samples. A common educational sample I did maybe 20 years ago was training to OCR digits. Any desktop could converge the training pretty quickly from a human comprehendible data set size. I don't remember how many neurons it used.. under 100 IIRC. Not all machin...
