Vancouver’s new mayor! I saw this back in August but didn't post it, because Pete didn't get to choose what his posters appeared next to. He got my vote and won the election. #Vancouver #BCPoli

RE: https://mstdn.social/@DemocracyMattersALot/117464491850760300 In Canada, lots of supermarket produce, e.g. pre-made salads, young spinach, etc, is from Taylor Farms. Um, don't buy it.

From the conservative-but-sane “The Line”: “The people who supported staying were, by and large, individuals with real reputations and credibility — and, therefore, something real and valuable to lose if they lied. The other side, by comparison, was overwhelmingly dominated by kooks and crooks who suffered no reputational penalty for saying whatever crazy idea or claim slipped out of their mouths.” https://www.readtheline.ca/p/jen-gerson-can-we-put-separatist?utm_source=post-email-title&am...

1/ On the face of it, the fact that a quarter of Albertans voted against Canada is upsetting, and the fact that most of the let’s-be-mean-to-immigrants propositions got plurality support is too. But there are extenuating factors. As one Albertan told me: “ the 25% “leave” is probably only half or less of that in reality— they campaigned pretty hard on “a yes will give us a stronger hand in negotiations, it doesn’t *really* mean separate”

Somebody is putting a *lot* of work into creating spam Fedi accounts, you can spot them by a post containing “google.co./share.google?q=" and then a whole lot of random hashtags. Please report if you see one.

What’s that you say? There’s a significant sleaze factor (some Nvidia-bankrolled) in certain #Genai - boom sectors and cracks are starting to show up? I’m shocked… shocked. https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/monopoly-round-up-the-cockroaches?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=11524&post_id=219903122&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=wabr&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email

Today is FORTRAN’s 70th birthday; its reference manual “appeared in a glossy cover, handsomely printed, with the date October 15, 1956.” https://softwarepreservation.computerhistory.org/FORTRAN/paper/p25-backus.pdf (The actual software wasn’t released till the following year) No longer fashionable but still, one of computer programming’s biggest success stories. I tip my hat.

RE: https://cosocial.ca/@timbray/117336957850753345 BTW, want to say that modern phone-cams are freaking excellent - it was *really* dark when this was taken - Pixel 10, no flash - and it’s only very lightly touched up in Lightroom. The picture would have technically impossible on any camera not so long ago.

It dawns on me that every LLM’s training input probably includes “Reflections on Trusting Trust” along with a lot of other material pointing to it admiringly and saying how important it is. Then I read about the “rogue agent” behaviors in the recent OpenAI meltdown and there’s this terrified scream starting to echo around the back of my brain. #genAI
