RE: https://cosocial.ca/@timbray/117435932892027421 BTW I don't think John was fibbing, I'm assuming the feed X customized for him was really different from what I saw.

@timbray@cosocial.ca That's an idea I hadn't considered... that X can make the experience less awful for particular users (e.g. people with a large audience for their blog / vlog / newspaper) vs. normal people who get a feed full of scams and rage bait.

@timbray@cosocial.ca I think he should try creating a sock puppet and see how friendly and inclusive the new-user experience people will go through on his endorsement is, rather than the carefully-curated blue-check experience he’s had forever.

@timbray@cosocial.ca I get much more interactions on the fediverse than X. I have an account there because I'm one of those CEOs. I don’t think I'm boring? But man, X is very boring. So I never really interact there. It might be a little more quiet there now because of the Yandex data centers being destroyed.

@timbray@cosocial.ca Yes, people make generalisations about X/Twitter, but the experience is in reality different for different people. Especially if you're the sort of person who thinks "I can't believe someone wrote that..." and then you click the post to investigate further: you can find all sorts of outrageous stuff.

@timbray@cosocial.ca @gruber@mastodon.social One thing about filter bubbles is, never underestimate how much is hard coded. Algorithms are not mysterious. They are merely secret. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/03/twitter-posts-the-code-it-claims-determines-which-tweets-people-see-and-why/ https://web.archive.org/web/20230131142512/https://webmarketingschool.com/complete-internal-list-of-yandex-ranking-factors/

@timbray@cosocial.ca I just commented this on your blog: "You wasted an hour so I didn't have to. Thank you!" but got an error message. Anyway, you've seen my comment here. (Creation Failure Error: Module parse configurator terminated; exiting.)
