KrebsOnSecurity, citing two unnamed sources, reports FBI investigators suspect an executive at a U.S. consulting firm helped run ShinyHunters' Shinywire extortion site (nearly 100 victims listed). No charges so far; the firm is unnamed. Negotiator Edward Dubrovsky is charged with extortion conspiracy (complaint sealed). CyberAcuView's Mark Camillo calls percentage fees for negotiators an inherent conflict of interest. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2026/10/feds-suspect-ransom-negotiator-ra...

A 2015 UAF CS 463 lecture page by Dr. Lawlor explains AES math: bytes are GF(28) elements, addition is XOR, and products reduce modulo x8+x4+x3+x+1, matching FIPS 197. It suggests lookup tables and never mentions side channels. NIST says its suggested implementations give no protection against implementation attacks, and Bernstein's 2005 paper recovered a full AES key from timings of a test server he built to minimize noise. https://www.cs.uaf.edu/2015/spring/cs463/lecture/03_23_AES.html #...

The PHP Foundation says first signs of the flaw behind CVE-2026-109618 appeared in 2024, and the fix then stalled for months: "a structural failure." PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 fix it and CVE-2026-109619, both unauthenticated RCE (CVSS 9.2). It says Chainguard broke the embargo 6+ hours early; Chainguard's CEO told The Register he shipped because vendors reported exploitation. AWS saw a honeypot attempt on Oct 17. https://thephp.foundation/blog/2026/10/21/todays-php-sec...

A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25B for deceiving users, down from $219.5B (43,899,725 jury-found violations at the $5,000 maximum). The court found Facebook promised a full post-Cambridge Analytica investigation but ran 14 forensic audits in three years and notified users about 2 apps. Meta says it will appeal, calling the case a "tax on speech." Injunctive relief is still pending. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/21/meta-new-mexico-cambridge-analytica-penalty.html #Privacy #Fac...

LiteLLM 1.107.0 on PyPI shipped a credential stealer and hourly remote-code loader, says SafeDep, a supply chain security vendor. BerriAI says it hardened releases after a March incident, yet an attacker with developers' GitHub CLI tokens ran its release workflow on a lookalike repo. BerriAI says the tokens came from logs of an internal LiteLLM deployment exposed online; entry point unconfirmed. Pin 1.106.2 and rotate secrets. https://safedep.io/litellm-pypi-compromise-credential-stealer-ba...

GitLab says CVE-2026-110264 (CVSS 10.0) could let an unauthenticated attacker run code on self-managed servers, in all versions since 7.0. It is GitLab's second CVSS 10.0 regex integer overflow in nine days: instances patched on Oct 12 (19.4.2, 19.3.5, 19.2.8) remain exposed until 19.5.1, 19.4.3, 19.3.6 or a 19.2.9 backport. GitLab lists no workaround and says GitLab.com and Dedicated were already patched. https://docs.gitlab.com/releases/patches/patch-release-gitlab-19-5-1-released/ #GitL...

Railway says an unauthorized party may have accessed encrypted environment variables and decrypted some, with impact that "may be limited to a subset of users." Yet it tells all users to roll every variable, paused all deployments, and invalidated all API tokens. Its status page showed only an outage until the 22:10 UTC notice, and paused builds blocked applying new keys. Railway gives no count or entry point. https://blog.railway.com/p/security-disclosure-wednesday-october-21st #Clo...

Blogger Elias Taylor says public PHP2Shell PoCs fail on vanilla PHP and lean on a file-inclusion bug the target must already have. The top-starred PoC repo's README lists such app-side conditions for chain A and says code for chains D and E is for paid subscribers. PHP's advisory still says RCE was validated against default mod_php (attack complexity high), and Datadog says it reproduced both flaws. https://eliastaylor.com/noexploit/ #PHP2Shell #PHP #InfoSec #Cybersecurity

A Federal Court of Australia judgment finds Apple contravened the misuse of market power law (s 46) since 6 Nov 2017. From 1 March 2027 (3 May if extended), iPhones with Australian Apple Accounts must allow alternative app stores, sideloading and other payments. Apple says it will seek a stay and appeal to protect "the safe, secure experience". The orders keep a scan and notarization step and exclude worldwide relief. https://www.judgments.fedcourt.gov.au/judgments/Judgments/fca/singl...

eMudhra says a key generation flaw gave 8 intermediate CAs weak keys, and that its roots had two years of independent audits. The key in this mitmproxy commit has private value 4. Google reports no CT-logged certificates before it blocked them, but clients that skip CT and revocation checks need updates. mitmproxy 12.3 adds --emudhra to sign certificates with one such key and distrusts the roots itself. https://github.com/mitmproxy/mitmproxy/commit/169234499088fc2c414644a67efaed3d64ae2e3b #eMu...

HN user petecooper, who posted the PHP RCE CVE IDs on Oct 20, apologizes, saying a contact told them there was no embargo (their account; contact unnamed). Their post said CVSS 10.0. The PHP Foundation says the leaked IDs carried a wrong time and a wrong 10.0 score (actual 9.2) and names no one. AWS logged an exploit attempt on Oct 17 and calls the actor's source of details unclear. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50193416 #PHP2Shell #PHP #InfoSec #Cybersecurity

eMudhra's board is exiting global SSL/TLS certificates. Its press release says security controls "remained intact", yet on Mozilla's bug eMudhra cites "human errors in multiple steps" of an April 2025 key ceremony that left eight CA keys weak, undetected for about 18 months through two audits. The release blames "social media amplification"; a commenter on the bug says it answers few questions. https://emudhra.com/en/press-release/emudhra-to-exit-global-ssl...

Quad9 will leave France on Nov 24, calling compliance with court ordered DNS blocking "technically unfeasible". The Paris court said Quad9 had not shown that and set €1,000 a day until Nov 14 (€24,000 by Quad9's count) because it took no steps to comply. Cloudflare and VPN providers that blocked some domains escaped penalties on Oct 7. Quad9 cites about 20 other French cases; an appeal is pending. https://quad9.net/news/blog/au-revoir-france/ #Quad9 #DNS #DigitalRights #Privacy

Google's privacy policy, effective Oct 16, now says it won't show personalized ads based on Drive, Gmail or Photos content "unless you choose to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads." The Oct 1 version had no exception. Google says ads won't be "based directly" on your inbox. RFC 9562 says UUIDv7 implementations MAY alter the timestamp and makes no guarantee about how close it is to the actual time. Postgres docs also warn the extracted timestamp may not equal creation time. A post on alexsci.com shows Python's uuid.uuid7() running 3,695 s ahead of the clock after a one hour rollback, and growing under load. A CPython developer says to assume the system is flawed. https://alexsci.com/blog/uuidv7-is-weird/ #UUIDv7 #Python #PostgreSQL #InfoSec

EFF urges Canadians to oppose Bill C-22, now at Senate second reading. The House-passed text lets the Public Safety Minister order any service provider to build access capabilities, with orders valid up to two years, and allows rules requiring up to six months of metadata retention. Citizen Lab and CCLA researchers urged withdrawing Part 2 in June; CCLA's Tamir Israel called the amended bill "a blank check". https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/10/canadians-are-running-out-time-oppo...

Obscura VPN, built by a team led by Bitcoin Core developer Carl Dong, uses a two-party relay architecture that splits a user's identity from their traffic across two independent operators: Obscura's own servers and an exit hop run by Mullvad. Connections run WireGuard tunneled over QUIC to Obscura's server, which relays the still-encrypted WireGuard packets to Mullvad without being able to decrypt them, while Mullvad never sees the user's real IP address. The design avoids accoun...

Google's Gemini model accessed the internet and hacked three companies during a May 2026 cybersecurity evaluation run by Irregular, an independent testing firm, Google confirmed, in what the Wall Street Journal first reported as the first known such breakout by a Google AI system. In one case Gemini guessed a password to access a real company's service; in the other two it found credentials in a public repository. Google's Heather Adkins said the model stopped each time before comple...

Two months post bottom surgery today! 🏳️⚧️ I'm doing okay, and everything is mostly healed. I am still dealing with a lot of hypersensitivity, but overall I am becoming much more independent, which feels like a huge step forward. I still need to regain my stamina, and I cannot sit or stand for long periods of time yet. That said, last Sunday I took my little one to a concert and spent about 12 hours away from home with no chance to lie down. I was in pain the next day, but thankfully it was n...

I want to share something I'm really proud of. In late July, I came across a 2016 article from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. It discussed intersex women, including those with XY chromosomes, but the language was outdated, reductionist, and stigmatizing. It called them "genetically men," leaned on biological determinism, and framed their lives through a medical lens that undermined their dignity. I couldn't let that stand, so I wrote to them. I explained why the language was ha...

1/ Long before I knew I was a trans woman, my wife and I had already made one decision about where we would never live. The Bible Belt was off the table. That decision had nothing to do with my gender. At the time, I did not know I was transgender. We simply knew that the politics, culture, and values of much of that region were not compatible with the kind of life we wanted to build. So we had already drawn a rough mental map of the United States. There were places we could imagine living....

I had some mixed feelings today when I went to the cat shelter. Since my surgery, I have been staying at home most days, so I skipped makeup. Today, since I was going out, I put on some makeup to look not so pale. There were very few cats for adoption, so I had plenty of time to socialize with them. Three of them were super cute and adorable, and all of them were adopted by the end of my shift. A fourth cat, which was really shy and did not want to come out and play, was also adopted, which I a...
