@thegiddystitcher Oh! The Explore feed is the Mastodon algorithm (that supposedly doesn't exist). It's the "best-of / trending" posts federated with your server, as ranked by number of recent boosts & favorites. Nice idea in theory, but easy to game & depends on the preferences of others & bots, not yourself. On my server Explore is lots of USpol & activism, which I find draining. I wish it was better at showing only topics I&...

@santiago +1 on the outdated Go port, that's a barrier to me as well. I'm currently using 1.15.1 on Windows. I think #HaikuOS is still on Go 1.11 (or even 1.4)? Unfortunately I'm not in a position where I can just pay people to do the work porting Go to Haiku either.

@pulkomandy @santiago I know that all Go versions since 1.5 (~2015) have been written in Go itself. But I've not looked into it deeply, so I don't know if anything prevents using the Go v1.4 that Haiku already has to compile each/all of the later versions. Thought I saw there had been an attempt to cross compile Go v1.18? If true, that version would work for me - but the lack of working Intel 8265/8275 WiFi would still prevent me from using my Go programs online on Haiku anyway.

@Ghastlyghost Oh excellent, glad Haiku is working for you! Seems I've just been unlucky with my model years, no WiFi on the 3 laptops I've tried so far. But I'll keep looking into it!

@cheribaker I think Kagi Search owes you a referral fee! Based on your recommendation a couple of months ago, I've gone all the way from skeptical, free trial, "meh I can prepay $10 once"... and now I'm doing ~700 #Kagi searches a month. So I've just loaded up on 6-months of prepaid Professional. And I got in before the Kagi Surprise too. (Long way to say - thanks for the recommendation Cheri!)

@Bossito@mastodon.green I've only had a very brief glance, but what I've seen looks disastrous. And I'm someone who listens to lots of Marilyn Manson and likes Myrkur & The Birthday Massacre. Maybe I'm being unfair and need to give it another chance, maybe I've lost my Eurovision spirit, bah humbug

@thegiddystitcher Curious to know how you're finding them if they're not federated! Do you have to explore other server timelines, or is following the hashtag enough?

@thegiddystitcher Ooh, this is super useful! I think I've seen it before but didn't think of using it to find unfederated users. Bookmarked now, thank you!

Looks like Teclis is back up again, the search engine for searching just the Small Web: https://teclis.com/ Run by the founder of Kagi Search (and the Teclis crawler's index is also used by Kagi), but Teclis appears to be free to use.

Trying to do actual work in #Linux tonight, as a bit of a newbie. But I'm hitting a brick wall, just opening a local index.html file. (This should be easy, right?) I've tried Firefox & elementary's "Web" so far. I can open the file from my USB stick, at /media/username/usb-stickname/ But then, the file somehow actually gets loaded from /run/user/1000/random-number/ (?!!?!!) ... which breaks all the links and images, because they're on...

@ahoneybun I think the Firefox install is a Flatpak, yep! And I guess Web is Flatpak too - it came default installed with elementaryOS, but does show up in "flatpak list" (and does look like it's really Epiphany). So I guess the solution is "don't use Flatpak"?
-
View post
@ahoneybun Bingo, that was it - I downloaded the regular Firefox binary straight from the Mozilla web site (instead of installing via my distro's AppCenter), and it loads local files just fine. Thanks so much for the hint!

Mystery solved! Seems that elementaryOS uses Flatpak when installing applications from their AppCenter, and Flatpak installs are very sandboxed. So sandboxed, that the web browsers wouldn't even open files directly from a USB stick. I installed the binary directly from the Mozilla site instead (ie the .tar.bz2 file they suggest by default), and I can open my local index.html file on the USB stick just fine now. So I think my Linux lesson of the day is - Don't Use Flatpak!

@funkybuddha @ahoneybun I saw a suggestion (see below) that you can use Flatseal to modify the sandbox permissions on a Flatpak. I think that's more hassle than I want to put up with, but if you want to stick with Flatpak maybe it's worth a try? https://hachyderm.io/@bigolewannabe/111850796582957111

@win8linux @waddlesplash Does this mean adding support for devices like a Focusrite Scarlett audio interface in Haiku? If so, then omg hell yes! Things are busy at the moment but I have a couple of Focusrites I could try testing when I get a chance.

@funkybuddha I found one more thing to try (though you've probably tried this too). In elementaryOS you can change the preferences of a Flatpak application directly in System Settings -> Applications -> Permissions. Granting access to "System Folders" made the Web Flatpak app load local files for me. Settings look like this:

The SDF instance I'm on crashed spectacularly yesterday, and still isn't quite live. So I started a self-hosted instance in the meantime, if you'd like to follow me there: @kohan

Just a reminder that I moved to @kohan as my main account. I'm not on SDF anymore. SDF downtime was one thing, but now I'm getting outright abuse from other SDF hosted accounts. I highly recommend setting up your own solo Mastodon server! It's been a far better experience than being on SDF or dotSocial. Things are soooo much better when you have full control over your filters, who you federate with, and which hashtags you relay. Conversation is calmer, happier, better qu...
