Terminal Update. Running out of things to procrastinate on, which is fine as the "history and reflowing text on resize" feature is metastasizing in my head. Resize seems to be working great, it changes the window size when you change the font size, and doesn't when the window is constrained (it's fullscreen, or in a tiling window manager). Well the fullscreen functionality is currently awol... maybe that will be a today thing. The fullscreen resize is only teste...

What if terminal, but instead of ANSI codes, html? What if Active Desktop was genius, but they *didn't go hard enough*?

Got sucked into a month long run of the StaTech modpack for minecraft with the gf. Was good fun, if a little fucky at times. Managed to finish the quantum age yesterday noon, did some pottering for a few hours after that. Finally free to do code :-p

Ok, code I started before the gaming, was to make the terminal query KMS to find out the active GPU. Find a GPU with connectors attached to it (means its plugged into a monitor). Use that GPU. Sounds simple enough. And sure enough, it works. Works really well. There were some wrinkles tho. Officially, according to kernel.org, applications open `/dev/gpu/card0` if they are going to do KMS things. Setting modes. Compositors do this. Apps not doing compositing should open `/dev/gpu/render0`, and...

Spent the morning making Valgrind Suppression files, to block out the hundreds of errors generated by the nvidia drivers. In nvidia's defence, by the very nature of an OS with memory mapping and pre-emptive multitasking,, hardware drivers are going to do things that to a user look like memory is being allocated and never free'd. Only the kernel can see the whole picture, and I'm not trying to debug that, just my programs. Not sure what `dbus`'s excuse is 🤔 Since...

I found "kms-quad", an example program that, apart from crashing on *every* device I have access to, features the ioctl's to correctly restore the TTY to its virgin state, and to disable the keyboard stream on STDIN on said terminal. That I wasn't reading it meant that commands I ran in the terminal would be executed by the parent shell when my terminal closed, as it went ahead and processed the stdin version of the keyboard input I was reading directly. Anyhow...

I'd love to know what the fuck is up with it. This has bit me a few times in the past, and is biting me now. Terminal emulator. Should be simple. AFAICT stdout is buffered, and those buffers not filling blocks output from the shell. But they're never going to fill, because interactive shells don't send newlines after all data.... ```C int fd; if( 0 != forkpty(&fd,0,0,0) ) return; execvp(getenv("SHELL"), NULL); ``` No amount of `fflush(NULL);` or `setvbuf(stdout,NULL,_I...

The 'A' glyph from the font "MrBedford-Regular.ttf" rendered in a font creation tool, and the points from it rendered in ASCII from my program. The "gotcha" for me was the `IS_SAME_OR_POSITIVE` flags in the `glyf` table. TT fonts store their points as relative to the previous point. So each "point" is a delta value. "IS_SAME" does not mean the current delta is the same as the previous delta, it means this delta is 0. Tell me I'm not the onl...

It is impossible to speak/write without context. That I have chosen to write this in English puts a colossal amount of context into play. The place I have written this brings with it context as well. *When* I have written this is a very large body of context. When it is being read brings further context. Then there is me. Anything I write brings the context of my life. No one knows all of that context, not even me. There are things that have shaped my life that I have no knowledge of. And l...
