artist's signature bottom right says "C. Broutin", couldn't find a title. I think it's this person https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Broutin man I used to freak myself out when I was a kid, there were some years where I couldn't sleep for imagining monsters. 🤣 Maybe the monstrous things that I imagine now are just as painful though. That person I like doesn't like me, they think I meant this when I really meant this, am I going...

The Tribes, Antoni Tàpies, 1949 This is on the spooky side. They had to scratch those lines in, the power of essential nature had to be emphasized that way maybe. like this world has multiple layers or that there is a strange fey magic creeping around 🤣 #art #scratched #etched #spooky #impish #elfin #spark #odd #strange

Moins de Lumiere, Serena Malyon: https://bsky.app/profile/serenamalyon.bsky.social This is really cool. She has a shovel in a field at night! The atmosphere is really good, the dark clouds, the distant little house with a light on. I think the wind has snagged her skirt a little bit. Who has got her in their spotlight? Aliens? Cops? The Mob? Another parent in the PTA? Love it. #art #spooky #mystery #shovel #hijinks #night #blinded #armed #withAShovel

The Storm, George Inness, 1885 I read this as creepy when I saw it. Inadvertently creepy maybe. The storm makes the whole scene dark but I think it's the shadowy tree and the person walking. Idk I'm seeing like some kind of evil riding in on the storm and making everyone crazy (or were they already crazy?) and then one thing leads to another and lightning strikes the wrong person at the wrong time and suddenly it's a slasher and there's blood everywhere 🤣 #a...

El Reposo Del Trovador (Troubador's rest), Julio Ruelas this is funny because the title sounds pleasant enough. Hate to wake up to that! haha. I like the gruesome little images along the border. Maybe this is an illustration for a story, idk, it has that kind of feel to me... #art #illustration #spooky #gruesome #vampire #ghoul #creature #siesta #cemetery #creepy

Hamlet and the Ghost, Frederic James Shields such a cool ghostly atmosphere. Some weather seems to be just right for ghosts and I think he got it, or pointed to that experience. To me that's a good ghost, also, sort of translucent and maybe hovering a little. Seems like there might or might not be other spirits about in the fog. #art #tragedy #ghost #dad #hamlet #fog #spooky #haunted #revenge #justice #undead

Ghost of Yugao, Yoshitoshi so elegantly done, really impressive. The creeping vine with its little seeking, curling tendrils looking for something to grab on to. and I think the ghost is aware of our presence. I've seen enough to know that a jump scare is right around the corner 😂 #art #woodblock #ukiyo-e #japan #spooky #ghost #creeping #vine #moonlight #haunted

A male skeleton on his knees before a female skeleton (vignette for the feast of the dead), José Guadalupe Posada, ca. 1892 Image included in the broadsheet "La calavera de cupido" (Imprenta de A. Vanegas Arroyo, ca. 1892). love this guy Posada. I have a couple of Posada books. Calaveras, they're already skeletons. The living are already dead. The texture and the attention apparent in the rough engravings gives everything so much character, maybe some kind of fun...

The Night Shift, Marianne Von Werefkin spooky atmosphere, colors are so amazing. Seems like a place where you'd find a body hidden in the shadows from some kind of mad scientist serial killer. The twin globes of the streetlights give maybe an unconscious association with eyes. Even if it's not a horror scene, look at the working people going in for the night shift, their heads down, exploited, cold. 👻 #art #workingClass #exploited #cold #spooky #atmosphere #twisted #color #...

The Dream of Reason Produces Monsters (El Sueño de la Razon Produce Monstruos), from Los Caprichos, Francisco de Goya, 1799 Something interesting in the comparison of Reason and dreams of monsters. I've read various things here and there that talk about Reason as being incomplete.... Our primate consciousness has big unreasonable feelings maybe. #art #goya #spooky #monstruos #nightmares #dreams #sleep #october #owls #bats #things

from Beatus of Facundus, 1047 more here: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-beatus-of-facundus-1047/ idk I was thinking that The Devil as an image is often part of Halloween and spooky season, unless he is in a work with Jesus, in which case the work is religious and not spooky. Then I thought that most religious stuff is out, if it's intended for the religion, and not for a spooky variation or derivative of the religion. So like a normal church funeral is out, but a cemet...

The Six Jizo at Yamashina, Kyoto, Sekino, Jun'ichiro https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%E1%B9%A3itigarbha I think this is well done. The tops of the grass bending down in the wind makes me think of spirits passing through, or luck passing through. Maybe catching a little chill, not just from the wind, the blank-faced statues are quietly present, unflinching in the elements. These guys are considered a positive, protective spirit but it's still spookier than if it were an empty...

Moonlit Night. A Village. - Isaac Levitan, 1888 So skilled, damn. The light is perfect and I can just about hear the owls, the wind in the trees, the crunching of the dirt underfoot. The Incantation (El conjuro), Francisco Goya So good. I'm putting the warning because I know that there are folks that aren't into this type of imagery. Maybe I like it because it's honest, in the way that fantasy can be more honest than reality? The one in the middle with the grimace-smile and the bats grabbing her hood is really strange -- perfect. Demented. I hope it's a basket of dolls that the other one has, who also has a flying creature on the back of...

Death and the Maiden, Marianne Stokes I like this Death, something about its expression, seems both somber and impersonal. Androgynous beauty? Look at those wings. The maiden seems vibrant and pure of heart, I want Death to let her live. But that's how things go. There are a couple of flower petals on the floor under the vase, maybe Death is there for the flowers. Idk I don't think Death is there for her. Just stopping by to say hi. Hi, Death. She will be changed foreve...

Crossing a divide to a new land. I read this story, seems like there was a lot of cold weather, but I guess this could be a cold scene. I Love that the sun is in a black sky. That makes it for me. #art #scifiArt #coverart #paperbackCover...

Century Plant, Jerry Bywaters, 1939 so much twisting going on in this painting, not just the plant but the earth, the rocks, everything is twisted under implied pressures, and the pressures have a flow, or an opposition, wrestling back and forth through the scene. The tough plant in the middle is adapted and bares its serrated teeth at the challenge. In real life those plants are just like that, they have grit, they have substance ❤️ #art #grit #substance #guts #pressure #elements #hard #tee...

Souvenir (I saw another page listing this as "Memory"), Marianne Von Werefkin another twisting sort of scene. Interesting. I guess you could say that a lot of the artist comes through in her paintings, in an amazing way, a consistent way, imho... Her scenes seem like they should be normal but they aren't, they're spooky and even seething. hahaha. I have the impression that the woman on the stairs is Thinking About Things, it isn't a carefree life f...

By Ursula Schultze-Bluhm couldn't find a title. Like things are weird, but not in a weak way, they're weird in a thriving, vibrant, ornery way. Biological mutation and adaptation also come to mind. There has been a change and we have changed in response, the nuclear fallout, the alien invasion, the new dark gods, just pissed us off, woke this up in us. 🤣👾 ❤️ 🙏 🤪 👽 It's almost October, I can't wait, I have a self-imposed directive to post weird spooky crap in...

Otto Piene maybe this is a palate cleanser by Otto Piene, couldn't find a title. A burned up spot, annihilated, reused by the universe as greasy carbon and ash. To be reused by the universe is our destiny, to be welcomed back into the fold, where everything is warm and nothing hurts. I think this is a beautiful thing and I'm not sure where I'd put it. Not in the bathroom. Not in the kitchen. Maybe you could put this directly across from a Mark Rothko and there wou...

Volaverunt (flown), from Los Caprichos, Francisco de Goya This is one of many weird prints in a series done by Goya and I like some better than others but it's worth checking out. This seems spooky but also possibly-probably social commentary. One of these seems to be having more fun than the others? Los Caprichos translates as "Caprices", and many of these are images of people who don't have the luxury of caprices. There are different opinions about it app...

Watch the Silence, Eric Roux-Fontaine Seems like there's a little spot here in this meadow where things are different and weird. And colorful. The Ghost, Josef Mandl, 1898 idk it looks like the grave has been disturbed, the knocked-over cross, the shovel, the planks. Also something glowing at the base of the next headstone over. This ghost seems spooky but not the kind that is going to eat your soul? Maybe the danger here is getting bummed out on an otherwise nice trip to the cemetery. We came to put flowers on a grave and enjoy the cultivated landscaping but now we have to solve the case of the crying ghost! ruh-roh. Zoinks! 🎃...
