What I am drawn to now: competitive first-person shooters, which I have not played in a long while because they negatively affect my ability to fight my predisposition for misanthropy. What my soul yearns for: grid-based tactics RPGs from the GBA era or earlier; Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, XII; the feeling of the Kingdom Hearts games up to 358/2 but without having to deal with the horrible platforming; the Sly Cooper and Spyro trilogies; emulating Smash Bros. with netplay on a Windows ME compute...

I think it’s been a while since I’ve posted about this, so: any help finding a new gig would be much appreciated. Hit me up at hire@nathanielmott[.]com — I’m open to all kinds of roles as long as they’re remote and, ideally, don’t involve slop or the feds. I have 15 years of experience as a reporter, writer, and editor. My work has appeared in outlets like Tom’s Hardware, PCMag, and README (RIP) as well as The Guardian, Motherboard, and a bunch of other places. I computer moderately well and ca...

“it’s a tool at the end of the day” appears so often in llm-related discourse that i’m starting to wonder if it’s the stock response from one or more of the chatbots. (not enough to check. although this may be the one time i’d consider “i asked $BOT and it said…” responses valid.)

Bills win over the Raiders and my kid doesn’t have measles—which is a fun thing to have to worry about in 2026, thanks, dipshits—so I’ll call that a decent start to the week.

it’s almost laughable how bad discord is at reporting behavior. got a message request asking to buy my profile for $100. declined it and then went to report it… but can’t. then i tried to message the mods for the server that user and i had in common… and i can’t. (all of this is on mobile; im not getting up to try on desktop.) so, uh, fuck it, i guess?

gave asahi on m3 a whirl the other day. even without true GPU support, it seems fine for my day-to-day of research in a browser, writing in emacs, etc. with the caveat that llvmpipe chews through battery life. i was getting estimates of about six hours, which is an incredible delta from macOS. i’m curious to see how this improves over time, but also, it seems like my perception of the macbook air’s utility has flip-flopped. before i thought it would be great to leverage the things i like about...

I’m not sure whether A) it’s impossible to complain about “virtue signaling” in a constructive way or B) my pattern recognition skills automatically-but-not-necessarily-correctly draw the line between “person who uses the phrase ‘virtue signaling’ unironically” and “person who is an asshole” with a high enough false positive rate for it to be a problem. Anyway this dude’s mad about forking Rails: https://ryanbigg.com/2026/08/amiko-a-desperate-virtue-signalling-attempt but also “his” rewrite fro...

there are uint8_t wolves inside of me one: “just use the weird linux distro or openbsd, it’ll feel good spiritually and is fine day-to-day” another one: “wouldn’t it be nice to be able to screen share on discord and be social for just a little while?” another one: “wouldn’t it be nice to play some valorant?” at least one of those wolves is a fuckin’ idiot, the problem is figuring out which one isn’t

Modern life is standing at a gas station sink with your hands under a motion-activated faucet waiting for water that doesn’t come. Am I a ghost, you wonder, waving your hands. Your palms look the same: a heart line, a head line, a story. https://sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/quicksand

it really seems like tech bros and their ilk saw that law / theory / whatever that went something like “if you’re in a debate with someone and you resort to comparing them to hitler or the nazis then you’ve lost” and thought they discovered one weird trick to win every debate from that point forward.
