What I am drawn to now: competitive first-person shooters, which I have not played in a long while because they negatively affect my ability to fight my predisposition for misanthropy. What my soul yearns for: grid-based tactics RPGs from the GBA era or earlier; Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, XII; the feeling of the Kingdom Hearts games up to 358/2 but without having to deal with the horrible platforming; the Sly Cooper and Spyro trilogies; emulating Smash Bros. with netplay on a Windows ME computer and “slightly better than dialup” internet; that Fisher-Price medieval knight game for Windows that I played as a kid; playing Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask at my great-aunt’s house with no guidance beyond “do not overwrite my save”; the first two generations of Pokémon but I have to leave my Game Boy plugged into the wall adapter when the bus arrives to take me to school because I was traversing the Seafoam Islands even though I had been told not to play games in the morning and I didn’t want to miss out on the chance to catch this bird.
