Imagine if a programming book got so popular, everyone used its examples in real software. And the examples created many problems related to null sequences in strings that still exist nowadays. In a way this is partially the reason why UTF-8 is the way it is. To think that a humble example can cause so many problems... Yes, the book is "The C Programming Language" by Ritchie and Kernighan. Page 29. #Linux #Unix #bsd

fun fact. it is still questioned if Neil Armstrong said "a small step for a man" or "a small step for man" i like to believe he completely messed up due to the pressure of the situation and said "It is a small step for man, but a huge leap for mankind" which of course, is redundant. but in a way, messing that sentence up makes it even more human.

At class we had these 10 or so pages of legal documents we had to read through and make a summary of. And everyone else finished... in 15 minutes or so. And the teacher was like: Okay, now that we are all finished let's upload it to the online campus and do another one! Listen. There is NO way, they read those pages AND wrote a full summary of them in just 15 minutes. They cheated; They used AI. She knows, she HAS to know. So... yeah, I guess that's just how stuff goes now. I'm...

Noelle from #deltarune is trans because of one very important detail: Because I say so. Okay now for reals: Just let people have their headcanons. Noelle is my favorite character, and transgender people get almost no representation whatsoever on mainstream media. Name a protagonist of a cartoon that is officially confirmed (inside the show) to be a transgender girl....... Yeah.... same goes for videogames. We get (at most) a side character that shows up for one or two episodes. That if we are...

I have a C1 English level, maybe even C2. And I am being forced to go to B1 level classes just because: "They are part of the course". If they end up not letting me skip these classes I am leaving the course. I keep having nightmares about English workbooks chasing me up to this day... I am NOT putting myself through this torture ever again.

Flipo con la gente de recursos humanos que están tan des-sensibilizadas con la realidad, que cuando encuentran a alguien que no quiere trabajar en una casa de apuestas/casino les preguntan: "Huh? Por qué no???"

First day of the multiplatform software development course. It was fucking horrible. Everyone is... just... so... uncaring. Like, most seem like they just chose the course just because "they felt like it". They don't give a fuck. There is an atmosphere of no interest whatsoever. Nobody is excited, nobody cares. It's like they are just NPCs. Nobody says anything, Nobody expresses any opinions. Nobody wants to answer anything the teacher asks. I thought it would be like back...

They could have written: "Solutions will be chosen in a neutral manner, based on how effective they are at solving a problem". instead of... this. Really, this single sentence is the one and only thing that pushes me away from OpenBSD. What do they consider politics? Do they consider transgender people to be "politics"? Are disabled people also "politics"? Is a screen reader considered "politics" since it helps a minority? How about a colorblind filter?...

I have this silly idea of taking busybox, toybox, gnucoreutils and the freebsd coreutils and writing the manpages for the posix shell utilities in a way that you can get manpages that show actual portable flags and behavior instead of relying on the featureset from POSIX to make portable scripts when most coreutils share flags that are not in POSIX and are useful. Same for shell builtins.

Can someone explain me why when you try to store the output of a printf into a variable in the shell it just doesn't store the newline at the end? It will store any other newlines but if the newline is at the end it will just not store it in the variable. #shell #bash #debian
