Mand-o-lantern 🎃 (she/her)

madgeface@mastodon.art

Fiber artist & technical writer full of typos - knitting, spinning, embroidery, sometimes poetry, more. I'm a perpetual weirdo, dabbler, atheist, on the left, writer, aspiring intersectional feminist, fan of eclectic music, bi & bipolar 2. I live in northern Virginia, in the US et je parle un peu de français, mais toujours j'ai des problèmes grammaticals, so I read it much better than I write or speak it.

I try not to toot or boost uncaptioned images, but occasionally one slips past me.

I finished the hat-scarf for donation and found a semi-willing model. I'm knitting him one also but with wool that I'll have to hand wash. This one is in acrylic (aka plastic, a petroleum product) so it'll be machine-washable. I could've found a machine-washable wool but I had this on hand. I'm in charge of running Zoom during guild meetings and it hasn't been going well the last 3 meetings. I can't seem to connect the external microphones to my laptop. IDK what I'm doing wrong, but I have the camera, the microphones, and the dongles and connectors to get this squared away and to write how to do it. Hopefully with infinite time it'll go better than the 15 minutes I have just before meetings to set up.

One of the items that Jeff peed on is a washable rug. Theoretically washable - it didn't do well in the washer, which couldn't balance to spin, so now the whole thing smells and is a sopping wet mess. I feel like the Cat in the Hat with the spot - I've just made it worse.

Oh lordy - someone I worked with over a decade ago is still calling me Mindy despite being on a platform where my name is spelled out. I'd say it's a typo, but he's a writer & editor.

I'm having a moment where I really really miss Vermont. Autumn really is magical there. Sigh. I've just got to get husband on-board with a vacation house or something.

An email from etsy this morning detailing their new AI policy, which sounds perfectly reasonable and maybe like what was needed at least a year ago if not earlier l. Good luck putting AI back in the box and cleaning up your infested marketplace, etsy.

I'm having a day when I can't seem to focus on the task at hand, only on reading notifications. I know it's no way to live, working on it. Having a long to-do list only makes it worse.

Does anyone here have practical tips for working with silk organza? I'm slowly preparing to cut and sew some, probably in November. It's going to back lightly embroidered pieces of cotton twill, which will be the bread in a sandwich with a thin sheet of acrylic. Current project regret: acrylic instead of glass or ... something else more environmentally friendly to give a fabric book enough structure to stand on its own without obscuring the back of the embroidery. #sewing

I needed some EB White wisdom tonight, maybe you, too? "Hang onto your hat. Hang onto your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is another day," from a 1973 letter: https://news.lettersofnote.com/p/wind-the-clock-for-tomorrow-is-another

Ok. Before I keep going, I thought I'd share my hack for creating a light box for tracing embroidery patterns (or whatever floats your boat). I have a glass baking dish with a cover, so I trap a light source in the dish - a phone flashlight or a battery powered dome light would work better than the flashlight - flip it upside down, and trace away. Before this, I was taping paper and cloth to a window during the day. Using the pan is much more comfortable. #embroidery

Hand spinners: I have a Schacht Matchless wheel with a jumbo flyer and bobbin and am thinking about getting a dedicated wheel with a jumbo flyer for plying so I don't have to change out the orifice and flyer every time I want to ply onto the jumbo bobbin. #HandSpinning… (1/2)

I'm still working on the Embroidered Mixtape and took a 24 second time-lapse video of about 45 minutes of work embroidering one line of a lyric using couching stitch. https://youtube.com/shorts/r8PulbUnKso?is=qgwaRDh0DvaLeUwx #Embroidery

I'm not sure what's going on in Eevee-land that makes the steps an attractive, safe place for her to nap. Someone - Jeff or Lola - marked the stone chimney for our gas fireplace (currently disconnected) in the family room this morning. Sigh. Cat politics. #catstodon #meowstodon #cats #noAdvicePlease

My native honeysuckle vine (lonicera sempervirens) has buds and blooms all over it and (hopefully) it will be like this the rest of the spring, all summer and fall, to the last frost. Edited to correct spelling #BloomScrolling

I found it finally @welshpixie and @joybooster - the uterus with the googly eyes, but I was wrong about the position of the eyes - ovaries as grabby hands is way better.

@MPgh This seems like a good solution. After all, isn't that a bit like what Dante did with The Divine Comedy? Well, and others.

Oh, NPR I love you (I really really do) but I remember now why I stopped listening 24x7: it's bleak.

@MariaLiv Thank you so much for this reminder! One of my college friends who's active on Facebook only (he's a weirdo), reminds me often that "Your outrage is being monetized" and I see it now in a new dimension.

It's the perfect day to play soccer/football here today! It's breezy and 60° F, partly cloudy. Suddenly wishing I had kept up with that, I played in the days when shin-guards weren't required.

I was going to save this for tomorrow, but I need framing suggestions. I finally finished the hand-spun French knot heart. I should take it to a professional, no? Or maybe I can DIY it ...I'm no framing expert, other than getting most of the hoop goop out of it (grime from my hands). I spun the wool last July, so there was a noticeable grime line when I took it out. This piece, the heart itself is approximately 8 inches by 11 inches. Advice & retoots welcome. #embroidery #handEmb...
