Prime Video seems to think that James Joyce’s authorial range was wider than it truly was. “Forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race?” Sure. Crashing a plane and battling the living dead? Maybe not.

@rhymeswithspecimen So, was this the outcome you hoped for? I think that in general words tend to “close up” as time passes — like, there was a time when people spelled “email” as “e-mail” — so if you go with “subequation” you can at least take comfort that you are speeding the evolution of mathematical English!

@benblumsmith I would think you can count quick opinions. That part of your resume is both to count service and to show that your peers value and trust your opinion.

Never fun to have a mistake pointed out, especially when it is not fixable, but that's what happened with section 3 of this paper. Fortunately, when people have cited this paper, they've only used results from the first two sections. On the other hand, it *was* fun working out how to recreate the way the paper had been formatted by the publisher of the proceedings volume in which it appeared... This version looks like the published version, with notes in the margin. https://ar...

@DougMuder@newsie.social I think it’s a good idea not to push yourself when your body is telling you it’s not ready. Hope you feel better soon!

My newest paper! For many years — at least since 2001, when I first read a paper by Daniel Maisner and Enric Nart that involved gathering data about hyperelliptic curves over small finite fields — I wondered whether there was an elementary way to enumerate all such curves efficiently. Turns out, there is! Using pretty straightforward techniques, the algorithm I present will write down all hyperelliptic curves of genus g over a finite field 𝐅_q exactly once, in time proportional to the number o...
