Next week, most of San Francisco votes in its first open congressional race since 1987. Whoever wins will represent not just San Franciscans, but also Anthropic and OpenAI. On this, I think Connie Chan is the only one who has the leadership we need: https://www.hardresetmedia.com/p/the-race-for-congressional-power

I am a pretty good cook. A few times, it's even been my main source of income. So if things get really bad with this whole AI thing, I've got something to fall back on. People still need to eat. I can sell bean tlacoyos on the waterfront.

I love working for a powerful union, but every single election cycle, I am sadly reminded of the paltry resources we have to support our member priorities compared to wealthy corporate interests.

I was stoked to read this morning's article on the @protonprivacy's CEO Andy Yen "full AI psychosis" published by @404mediaco. Proud of the workers speaking up and pushing back. https://www.404media.co/manifestos-fear-and-loser-thinking-inside-protons-ai-reckoning/

I had a dream last night that I accidentally voted in next week's US election and I started panicking since I'm not yet a US citizen. I guess I'm absorbing a lot more of the rhetoric than I expected.

Dolly Parton was a real one. RIP. Such a loss for Tennessee.

I wish I had learned Latin when I was young. I think it would have helped me master French and Italian faster. And it might also have helped me keep the latter.

I recently had to interact online with the Mexican Tax Administration Service, and all I can say is that their level of oversight and control would make the most uptight Swiss blush. On top of a detailed documentary process, I couldn't turn off my camera or microphone for the entire session, and I had to go through various physical exercises to ensure I wasn't a deepfake. The end result was a cryptographically signed PDF with its raw Base64 codes visible, so the printed version h...

Last night, here in SF, I saw an Amazon Zoox autonomous vehicle drive half a block down the Folsom Street protected bike lane to pass a fire truck with its emergency lights activated. It stopped, then drove in reverse on the same bike lane, blocked the intersection for about a minute while hesitating, before crossing the yellow double lines and driving against traffic. Oh, and the AV had a passenger! Crazy shit.

For the past few months, I've been helping shepherd a complaint to the UK press regulator Impress against a well-known British environmental journal for breaching the Attribution & Plagiarism clause of the Impress Standards Code. Yesterday, Impress published its adjudication, upholding the complaint and ordering the publication to publish a correction. I believe it is the first adjudication in which AI was raised, even though it wasn't material to the decision. An exciti...

Each Columbus Day, I am faced with a choice: go to the Sunrise Gathering on Alcatraz or stay at home and argue with anti-Indigenous people online. I chose the latter this year. The worst ones are the anti-Indigenous Mexicans.

Wow, the Autistici/Inventati server in Amsterdam was seized at request of U.S. authorities after "antifa" allegations. Crazy times. https://nltimes.nl/2026/10/14/amsterdam-server-seized-request-us-authorities-antifa-allegations

I'm delighted that SCOTUS reaffirmed birthright citizenship today, but the threats are far from over. Europe remains a cautionary tale on why it must be protected here in the USA. https://sanfranciscan.org/2025/02/26/birthright-citizenship-and-europe-a-cautionary-tale/

Neighborhoods like the Mission, the Tenderloin, SoMa and Chinatown are dense and vibrant. Households have low car ownership and high transit usage. But many residents are working class, often immigrant. They’re not the “right” type of urban dweller for many fans of urbanism. So instead of being urban archetypes, most urbanists focus on European models of urbanism. They point to the Netherlands, Germany, etc. Whenever places like the TL are mentioned, the focus is on the negatives, on how they’r...

This blew my mind: In 1614, the #Indigenous #Nahua noble and #historian Chimalpahin Messenger with Shield, documented (in Nahuatl!) the arrival of the Japanese embassy in Mexico on their way to Spain. Chimalpahin writes out the dates using the Mexica calendar as well, staring with 1-Tochtli (1-Rabbit) and goes into great detail about how the Japanese dressed and acted. Amazing. If you read Spanish, Miguel León-Portilla translated the diaries. You can find them here, with ample background: http...

This May Day, San Franciscans are saying: Shut it Down! That means no school, no work and no shipping. Workers’ Needs Over Billionaire Greed: NO WAR, NO CUTS, NO DEPORTATIONS! There will be at least two marches: One at 2PM at Civic Center Plaza and another one at 4PM at the Embarcadero Plaza. #SanFrancisco #BayArea #MayDay #ShutItDown

I gifted myself a single-volume edition of the Lord of the Rings. I last read it when I was half the age I am today, and it's an entirely different experience now. This edition is not very bulky and the cover is a bit flexible, so it makes for good comfortable reading.
