Last night, here in SF, I saw an Amazon Zoox autonomous vehicle drive half a block down the Folsom Street protected bike lane to pass a fire truck with its emergency lights activated. It stopped, then drove in reverse on the same bike lane, blocked the intersection for about a minute while hesitating, before crossing the yellow double lines and driving against traffic. Oh, and the AV had a passenger! Crazy shit.

  • Here is the first part of this incident, with the AV reversing out of the protected bike lane. I sent a report to the SFMTA and CA PUC.

@chema@social.sanfranciscan.org Looking for explanations, and coming up with: 1. The remote operator took control because of the fire truck, decided to take an available lane, realized it was a bike lane, tried to back out, and panicked. 2. The nav system, which presumably knows where all the bike lanes and double yellow lines are, deliberately and autonomously choose to take the bike lane to avoid the blockage, and then an operator intervened. Either way does not bode well.
