For the past few months, I've been helping shepherd a complaint to the UK press regulator Impress against a well-known British environmental journal for breaching the Attribution & Plagiarism clause of the Impress Standards Code.
Yesterday, Impress published its adjudication, upholding the complaint and ordering the publication to publish a correction. I believe it is the first adjudication in which AI was raised, even though it wasn't material to the decision. An exciting victory for grassroots organizers!

Throughout the process, I learned a lot about what plagiarism and attribution are, how AI-supported drafting cannot be conclusively detected from a published text alone, the limits of forensic analysis, and how that makes AI effectively moot as a matter of proof in cases like this. What matters more is being able to trace where content originated and how it traveled downstream.
